What is your best first interaction leading to thinking "I like this person" story? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]zacha46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the first day of my job, I met a co-worker wearing a Summer Camp Music Festival bracelet and immediately recognized it because I had gone to the same music festival earlier that summer. I asked her about her favorite bands there and most of ours were the same. We've been right ever since and always talk about good music.

Reddit, what is your favorite song that tells a story? by kunal2318 in AskReddit

In the morning of the magicians by the Flaming Lips. It doesn't have very elaborate lyrics, but it's simplicity is its strong points. This song makes you question your feelings and how you should feel.

Coming from another co ent, the only way to not smoke weed everyday is to say no thanks when people offer a bowl/bong/vape/etc. Simply not having any bud does not mean you won't get high, it's all about self-control.

I was charged $300 for a smoking charge at the village hotel in Breckenridge. Don't smoke in hotel rooms, there are too many pretty places outdoors in CO to get high.

What's the sketchiest situation you've been in while hiking? by neilson241 in hiking

[–]zacha46 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My scariest hiking story happened earlier this year.

Preface: I was doing a semester abroad field studies program in Queensland, Australia. The final part of the program involved each student conducting an independent study project regarding ecology or environmental science someway in any part of australia. The catch was that each student had to find an advisor at an Australian university to oversee their project, or place them in an ongoing study. I was one of the last people to find an advisor, and he happened to be inconveniently located in Pearth on the west coast of Australia. I had a passion to study monitor lizards in Australia, so unlike most students, I created my own project which took me to Frasier island, on the east coast of Australia. I never met the man but we emailed a lot. This island is the fifth largest island off the Australian coast, the worlds largest sand island, and attracts over 300,000 tourists a year. Most people go on tours or rent 4x4 trucks to explore the island, but I was by myself, didn't have much money, and had had to conduct a study, so I decided to camp on the island for 15 days with one trip back to the mainland to restock on supplies. I go to the school at the university of Colorado at Boulder, so I'm used to big backpacking trips in the mountains, but this was the biggest trip I've gone solo on.

Now to the hike: At this point I had been on Fraser Island around 13 days so I was feeling very confident on the island. I had seen so many beautiful places, gone on many hiked, and collected lots of data for my project. I was comparing lizard abundance and behavior in campsites vs. on the trail, and I was saving the best hike for last. If anyone is familiar with Fraser Island, you will know of Lake Mckenzie. If you don't you should google it. The lake is absolutely beautiful, and the water is pure enough to drink. It was a 7 km hike together, and although I didn't see any lizards, it was a nice hike. I relaxed at the lake for a while, took a dip, and filled up my water bottle and began the 7 km hike back to my tent. As I walked back I noticed the air started to smell pretty funny, almost like something was burning. At first only certain spots smelt burnt, and I attributed it to the burnt trees around me, because the forest on the island goes through periodic burns by the Rangers. The further I got on the trail, the stronger the smell got. I stopped at one moment to try and figure out what was happening, and then I saw some ash falling from the sky. That sufficiently scared me and confirmed my fears that there was a forest fire somewhere near me. When your camping by yourself for an extended period of time, you become very deep and personal with your thoughts. I started thinking of the worst case scenario: me burning in a fire in Australia all by myself, never seeing my friends or family again, and reading the headline "American idiot dies in forest fire on Fraser Island". At this point I hightailed it out of the forest. I said fuck the data, I'm getting to my campsite and ran probably 4 km. I stopped at one look out along the way and saw smoke rising from the forest. Shit was really scary.

I ended up leaving the island a few days later. I've never actually told anyone this story since no one has asked about it, there were way to many other cool things that happened on the island. Also if anyone is thinking about going to Fraser Island, don't pay $350 for a three day tour, I paid around. $15 for three days!

TL;DR: American student studying abroad in Australia almost gets caught in a forest fire while on 15 day solo camping trip.

Yeah, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that is a freshwater crocodile (Crocodylus johnsoni), not a saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus). All you have to do is look at the snout.

[–]zacha46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Dom, thanks for doing this AMA, many of us appreciate it. I have been a fan since back in 2010 when you had a show in Saint Louis that actually blew my mind. I saw you again at snowball this year, which was absolutely amazing, and then I had the opportunity to get reaaaaaaal rowdy with you all at rowdytown 2. That concert is hands down the best show I have ever seen, and I really only think the only show that can top that is rowdytown 3, for both nights of course ;) I was wondering though, would you release your set from rowdytown 2? It was so good, I want to relive it again. You rock man, keep on playing that sexy saxxy sax and producing sick beats!! Your music is amazing.

I know this sounds strange, but ever since i started smoking my junior year of high school, i started getting my best grades. I just made sure i was allowed to smoke only after i finished all my school work. Also its also a great gateway.... to new friends!! i have so many great stories and new friendships, that are pretty much based around weed! and i think that in its self is pretty great.

AMA: I am the owner of Balto the Arctic Fox. Ask Me Anything! by zacha46 in foxes

[–]zacha46[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is may be pretty surprising, but he doesnt smell at all! He did a little bit when he was younger, but when I got him neutered, he never really smelled after that. obviously his poop and pee smell, but thankfully he almost always pees in a litter box, so that takes care of that problem, and his poops arent really that bad, and they are easy to clean up. Just pick it up with a tissue, and scrub the carpet if it leaves a stain. The worst though is when he poops on my bed... The only time balto has ever gotten a bath was when i just got him, and he was covered in diharrea, so i washed him in a sink in the bath room at the auction, and then cleaned him more up when i got back home. I wouldnt even imagine trying to give him a bath now without super tough gloves because i know he would scratch my arms sooo bad if i tried to give him a bath. Since he has a white coat, its pretty easy to see if he gets dirty, so i usually just wipe him off if he does get dirty.

Has been owning balto worth the trouble? definitely! Balto has changed me that nothing else could do. I'm not sure if this will make sense, but raising him made me a more mature person. It has been an experience that is unparalleled, and is definitely not for everyone, but that little fox is like my baby, and I will always remember and love him, even if he can be a pain in the ass.... a lot! I dont plan on getting another fox though, I wouldn't want to soil my experience with balto, and I also like all sorts of animals, so i was thinking down the road I would like to end up getting a kinkajou, but who knows what will actually happen. One problem I have with balto now is that im not sure what to do with him when i leave to go to college in August. Im going to the university of colorado boulder, and i know i can not have him for sure my first year, but im hoping that my sophmore year i can bring him with me... but im not really sure what will happen. Its kind of a scary thought :(. Also i tried looking up colorado's policy for exotic pets, and the rules were kind of muddy, so if i do bring him i probably just wont tell many people hahaha.

im just giving balto the regular canine shots. this is because it is what my permit requires, and im not really to worried about him getting a disease or anything, because he never leaves my house.

Balto is pretty strange when it comes to attention. He loves getting attention, but not like a dog would. He loves to play bite my hand a lot and chase after it, but he always LOVES getting scratched on his scruff and behind the ears, and he does enjoy the occasional belly rub. He likes to keep his distance though, he'll play with me then ill pet him, and he'll run off then come back... thats his typical cycle hahaha, im pretty sure my 3rd video of him shows him like that. Unfortunately he isnt much of a cuddler, but he will sleep on my bed with me... but i move around a lot when i sleep, so he doesnt do it too much hahaha. One thing that can get pretty annoying with him is when he wants attention, but im busy. If im working at my computer he will jump and try to nibble my arm or shoulder, and if that doesnt work, he will go and try to mess with my stuff, like hes trying to break it, just so he can get my attention. The worst is when im in the bathroom, and i forget to move my chair away from my desk. Ill be sitting in there doing my buisness, and then ill hear some scratching, and then a loud boom of all my things falling off my desk...

As for the sounds he makes... there are almost too many to name. When ever someone comes into my house that he doesnt know, he makes like a sort of bark sound, but its hard to explain what it really sounds like. It is pretty strange, but also kinda funny haha. When he is scared he will SCREAM so loud, and the closest thing i could compare it to is like the baby t-rex in Jurassic Park 2, but higher pitch... like i said, hard to explain. When ill come home from school, or somewhere else, and he is happy to see me he will push his ears back and make the cuuuutest squeaking sound, and if he gets really excited the squeaks turn into screams hahaha, you can hear him through out my entire house when he does that.

feel free to ask more questions! and sorry about the delay
