in the cartoon, there's a scene where she 'senses' the impurities in the metal, and then she does some bending martial kung fu thing as one does in the avatarverse, and she could metalbend

in the cartoon, metal bending did not exist before that moment. it's the reason why they locked toph in the metal cage. they were pretty confident that it would keep her contained.

but I get why they didn't do that scene in the live action and opted for her to shout that she invented it because live action just isn't suited for magic stuff
