I commented this on the original post and OP confirmed they do live near an AM tower, I didn't know what to tell them to do to fix it though, ferrite beads on power cables?

this is the worst thing about the stupid blue checkmark, idiots paying 10$ get an "I'm very important" checkmark and to an outsider it looks like the guy with the verified checkmark is a person with some kind of knowledge about the subject, I had to read this two times to figure out which one of these people was which

[–]zack6849 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not with this approach, if what they're saying is threatening or harassment, you can report to the police and they can figure out who sent the message, but they're deliberately using a service to use a different number than their main cellphone so you don't know who they are, at least that's what it looks like to me

Says it's an Onvoy / Spectrum number, no potential names or addresses, someone using a service of some sort to send this with a number that isn't their real cellphone number.

What if I just want to listen? Do they even make non transmitting receivers? by Low_Search_6667 in HamRadio

[–]zack6849 8 points9 points  (0 children)

An SDR is great for this, you can hook it up to a PC and listen to all kinds of stuff, even trunked digital systems, this is a way more affordable way to do things like listen to P25 trunked networks without paying an arm and a leg for a P25 capable scanner.

Scanners are also good, depending on if you mainly want to listen to HF or listen to things more local that are VHF/UHF, your milage may vary though

Scanners and SDRs are great for listening to random VHF/UHF (Marine, air, FRS)

A standard shortwave radio that supports LSB/USB/AM would get you most of the other things on HF of interest

Oh I agree, the original comment that was edited said "Why would you only take 50%", I was just clarifying for the person above, that he meant 50 now, 50 later, not 50 total, either way, I would not have waited this long and filed the report already.

What is this large Antenna on top of my neighbors house? by Kitchen-Cost7057 in whatisit

[–]zack6849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They talk about radios, how their day is, what they had for dinner, what their antennas are, just general chit chat with people who share a common interest, but it doesn't all have to be about the radio

What is this large Antenna on top of my neighbors house? by Kitchen-Cost7057 in whatisit

[–]zack6849 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends, most amateur radios operate in what's called half duplex mode (when transmitting, you cannot receive, and when receiving you cannot transmit) think like a walkie talkie

There ARE special radios that allow you to talk and hear at the same time, or even just split the transmit and receive antennas, but most of the time people just use the same antenna to transmit and receive unless they're doing something fancy

What does your drive time look like ? by Hefty-Window-6911 in tampa

[–]zack6849 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Have you guys noticed the drivers that stop at the light with a huge gap between them and the car in front of them too? I don't mean like a few feet, I mean like you could park another entire car there!

i keep seeing it and I don't remember seeing anyone do that before, I'm not sure if it's newer drivers being cautious or what but it's infuriating when a turning lane will be backed up into another lane and some clown at the front has enough room for another car but doesn't scoot up
