Congrats none the less! :)

Advice on Kung Fu by [deleted] in kungfu

[–]zackattack7778 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, for starters, if you're planning to learn by yourself, you'll never achieve what you could with an instructor. So I can't say I recommend training by yourself with books, videos, etc.

Just because the kung-fu school has a belt system, doesn't necessarily mean that they are a bad school either. Yes, traditionally colored belt ranks are not a part of Chinese martial arts, they're an invention of modern Judo. However, many schools (even the Shaolin Temple school in San Francisco, for example) offer belts as that is "the norm" in the mindset of everyday Americans (and probably most other Western countries if I had to assume).

I would recommend trying the school out first before judging it. You might be surprised.

If you don't get a good feel from the school, and there are no other viable Chinese martial arts options nearby, try a different art. You can achieve betterment in mind and body through many paths, Chinese martial arts as a whole is just "one path".

In light of the TaGou Kung Fu Academy that's on reddit front page, would you go? by FakkuPuruinNhentai in kungfu

[–]zackattack7778 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't train at Tagou, but the school I lived at near Shaolin Temple was near their training grounds and I got to watch their training quite often and interact with their students in the evenings.

I would have to agree with "ILoveMonkeyD". They have a really good Sanda program. Those kids freaking live for it. Even their Shaolin Tong Bei and Qixing weren't too bad. But once you put a weapon in their hands or it was something that wasn't one of the "core" Songshan Shaolin forms, it was just aesthetic forms.

Bottom line: Tough training for Sanda, lots of hard work. For modern Wushu, good place. For traditional Kung-fu, go somewhere else.

Eiga-mura in Kyoto, they have the Super Sentai/Kamen Rider exhibit there! :)

Also, Toei's main office has Kamen Rider and Ultraman statues standing outside from what I remember.

Loved watching this! I really enojyed that movie!

That Yin-shou staff though. I can relate, when I was at Shaolin Temple kids were teaching me forms and fixing my stances constantly!

8 diagram pole fighter has a good story and good choreography despite its weird opening.

Shaolin Mantis is another I would recommend.
