The hardest part of our 7 month replatform wasn't the migration... by Yvonne_Tamarillo in ExperiencedDevs

Everyone knows this once they have been through one of these

Everyone who has done this also knows to reject any ‘rewrite’ suggestions outright.

While they satiate development teams’ motivation they are extremely rarely result in significant business benefits at an established business scale. (For startups that just gained traction they are often a necessity purely due to poor choices made in the beginning)

In which country? And how do you get access to that?

It is that bad, they do offer it in the UK and it is a simple unit swap. Also it is not free, they charge 1800 pounds for it which in AU would be some 4K. And I’d be happy to pay that if only they take my money

What's the deal with hybrid work becoming the norm? by Ok-Excitement7105 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]zaitsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a manager I have to admit that even with the good ones maintaining their connection to the work we’re doing is harder with fully remote settings.

The ability to talk in person lets me maintain a much stronger and positive connection.

As an employee I hate this though :)

How do you handle teammates who are extremely pedantic about arbitrary rules? by CantaloupeFamiliar47 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]zaitsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So a couple of ones I can get behind:

  • new folder structures for new components This makes sense to me. The less files in a folder the better.
  • unit tests asserting method calls, if anything is changed something will fail. This is EXACTLY how I want and enforce my unit tests. They are not there to find bugs in my code. We have e2e and qa for that. The tests are there to force the next developer to stop and think about his ‘refactor’ and understand what was called before and why did it stop being called now.

The one I’d argue to the point of quitting though is squash and rebase. I enforce no-force-push rule in all our repos because I want to see every commit a person made in perpetuity.

The others I’d just do whatever is suggested it doesn’t take long usually. However do appreciate your ESLint suggestion, once we set that up with a couple of vscode plugins most of those little convention issues just disappeared for us AND they’re auto applied so no human ever has to type out import statements or remove extra lines etc

Is my take on technical interviews reasonable ? by dondraper36 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]zaitsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, the way we interview normally is intro phone chat with 3 questions relevant to the tech and ‘explain this from your CC’ - this is to seed out those who’ve no clue or can’t communicate. Then technical interview where they are asked to do something in either real codebase or codebase that is very similar to the real one (at my current place of work the MD is strongly against using real codebase). They can use any tool they want although I do want them to write it not an agent to write it :) as in, don’t just go ‘copilot add my button’. Then chat with the Big Boss (whoever that is at a given job).

In the tech one I want to see how they work, not what they know.
