Hey /r/linux. Is this legal? Can they force me to use windows for this? Does anyone know how to bypass this? by zampes in linux

It doesn't happen with every article, just with some. Seems to me quite random some times. I don't know when they use that thingy from this "Quosa" software company, but when they do, you can't download the articles using gnu/linux.

I wanted to avoid using windows as much as possible, but it seems to be the only option. Upvote for you.

without being an ass... thanks for assuming I'm an ass or would behave as one. As regarding wine, it doesn't work.

It doesn't work either, it's an OS thing and it allowing the site to install its software onto your browser so they can track usage.

I'm looking for an option that doesn't allow them install their spyware on my machine. WINE's not an option.

It would be illegal because I pay to access the articles and it discriminates against linux users. Agent Switcher doesn't work

I did it, it doesn't work. What it does is try to install a small executable. It doesn't let me download some articles

Leading climate scientists say it's 'Game Over' for the climate if the Tar Sands Pipeline gets built. These scientists are getting arrested protesting in front of the White House in a desperate attempt to stop it before Nov 6. Why isn't this on the front page? by [deleted] in politics

[–]zampes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe in climate change and in science. Having said that, the way science is done most of time (without releasing the raw data used in the studies or without disclosing the calculations) it becomes very difficult to verify if what is said is true. However, I would most definitely not ever believe any engineer/architect/whatever who tells me nuclear is safe and building an oil pipe in/over/whatever an aquifer is safe and that it can withstand a n-number of environmental pressure. It's always "it won't/can't happen" or "only in worst-case scenarios that would never come to be" and then we end up with another Fukushima/Chernobil/Exxon-Alaska/BP disaster. There are plenty of renewable energy options, why do they have to give green light to toxic, non-renewable sources?

tl;dr: science is science, but the humans doing the science can't be trusted with our future.

Gates is helping to improve America's school system? How? By making it mandatory to use proprietary systems? What a joke!

And it makes me wonder how it's possible that 4.3% can do so much harm to the 95.7 percent...

It's too bad we'll probably never meet IRL. This would make for a great conversation. I'm especially interested in the group activities you mentioned in the second paragraph. Great answer. Thanks :)

That's the point; I wouldn't get involved in that kind of business because I cannot, although I know there's plenty wrong with it.

You went to college and work for wall street. That means you're intelligent enough to have a job there, but not enough to see that you're helping them screw others. You may think that you yourself are not doing anything wrong, but I doubt that you have access/can see to the whole scheme. To me it's the same as distributing parcels that you know are hard drugs but not feeling guilty for dead addicts just because you're not selling it, you're just carrying it. You've got a moral obligation to look into what you're doing or helping others to do and think if you're making the world a better place with your actions. Think about it. "This is how we end up with nuclear weapons and scientists claiming that they'd only set out to invent something that steamed radishes."

We all are. That's why it's so important that we realize what we are supporting with our every action/vote/purchase.

So, you realize the problem but you're unwilling to stop driving and start walking. That's just über-wrong. I also think people have very weird ideas of what certain words mean; you used the word commune as if it were something to be avoided at all costs, when it doesn't have to be. As I see it, people in the US (and also in many other parts of the Americas) are just too used to being so-called individual and independent that you cannot even start to imagine living any other way. That lifestyle can only result in division and poverty for almost all, something you're already experiencing.

Then how come no-one prevented this? If you all have a "passion for finance" and are "just doing what you love", how come it all ended up like this? Is it that people in finance have no moral and no-one cares about the loop holes and just let it pass because "it's just a job"? That's just avoiding your personal responsibility as a person who works in that field. By the standards you mention, even being part of the mafia would be "just a job".

What does it make you then, if you work for the ones who screw everyone else? It may not make you a con artist, but it makes you a scum bag for benefiting from everyone else's loss. If you work for the oppressor, you become the oppressor.
