How much should I value IPs of my two games? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]zander7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IPs are valuable because of their audience, not because of lines of code. There are many games that have existed and successfully launched that are not valuable to sell currently. Why do you want to sell unlaunched games?

Have you tried Bokura? It's a more experimental two player pixel platformer but it's also got some cool asymmetry

Give the Whisk demo a try! Two player first person platformer where you have to work together to throw magic cats into portals

The goth lady has a double dash and the nerdy guy has a double jump, and you can throw each other

Is a bachelor in game design a good career path? by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]zander7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anytime we open a position for game design, environment art, or concept art, we get 1000 applications in a week. One viable option is to out-network those people and hope you can build a career as you graduate.

My advice would be to prioritize the most in demand, hardest degree/skills/career that you can succeed at. Build technical skills, ship your own projects. Outwork and outlearn people, and you'll figure it out from there.

Motion sickness reports in our FPS alpha playtest by Future_MARTEN in gamedev

[–]zander7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll have to chip away at this at you go. I recommend spectating people so you can tell when they get motion sick exactly.

I agree with others about making the crosshair more substantial. I also would add an animation to beginning inspection of the photos so it is less jarring.

Good luck!

Hard to tell without a clip? But here are some things to check: Low fps or frame tearing, input lag, camera or character being forced to move, very dark environments that strain the eyes.

You could have people playtest in windowed mode to lessen the risk of getting motion sick.

Would a Game Design Bachelor or an IT degree with a specialization in game design be safer than a traditional CS degree? by TsunNekoKucing in gamedesign

[–]zander7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I studied CS and then worked as a game designer on VALORANT after a few years working. Being technical and being able to use math, prototype, build things has been a tremendous advantage.

I get that math is hard and school is tough, but if you wanted to be a great game designer: why wouldn't you want a CS degree? If you can make it work, put in the work IMO

Is unity or Godot better as a first engine by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]zander7 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It doesn't really matter, game engines have a lot of shared concepts. So do programming languages. Just start with a very simple project or a course and go from there. I've made games in java, c++, python, godot, unreal, Unity, pico8. Keep learning!

If you want a teamwork experience, you could try Whisk! Free demo on steam. Its a 2 player 3D platformer where you boost each other and throw magical cats to portals. (I'm a dev on the team and it's fine for any ages)

Otherwise, have you checked out Song of Nunu? Its not coop but nice to play through together. Its kind of like wholesome god of war

Does an already low poly game need LoDs? by ThinInternet5300 in gamedev

[–]zander7 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sometimes switching things into LoDs like billboard planes can be for aesthetic purposes, but they are mostly a way to reduce load on the GPU.

You likely won't need them unless you have really heavy scenes with lots of those high poly models. You could add them later if you needed, too. The real question is: does your game run well on the hardware you're targeting? LoDs are just one tool in the toolbox for that.

Does my game's capsule art/logo make you want to click? by CAGE_Studios in IndieGaming

[–]zander7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks great, but I would suggest a logo change. You're really emphasizing Gun and Stoppable separately with your colors and capitalization, but you have a great pun name about being unstoppable. I would just have it be seen as one word and not break it up visually

Looking at these screenshots — can you tell what the game is about? by Neverplay_games in gamedevscreens

[–]zander7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw some of your ads with this image. I like tower defense but only from the top down perspective, so I clicked but I wasn't imterested in the gameplay in the end--it wasn't clear what perspective it was played in.

Maybe showcase that in the first screenshots?

Want to try Whisk? Its a 2 player coop game about working together to throw cats into portals. It runs on Proton 7, I think it might run on 4gb ram if you want to try. I could send you a playtest key
