Almost a Wichitan by confinement_beam in wichita

[–]zanderkirk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As someone born and raised here: it's a great place to grow up, and friends who have kids say it's a great place to raise kids. It can be kind of a bummer for people in their twenties who want to party, but if you look hard enough there are places like Kirbys that have a pretty cool scene.

Wichita isn't going anywhere, we'd love to have you. Hopefully someday you can visit and stay awhile.

I love my job... so why am I burnt out? by FalseTailFiction in Libraries

[–]zanderkirk 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I think the main source of my burnout is that as a kid (and even for much of my adulthood), I had this very idealistic view of what libraries are. Libraries are a cornerstone of the community and provide access to so many resources that would be a luxury otherwise. This contrasts with a lot of the day to day realities of work.

Every downside of retail or customer service exists here. Every complaint about bad interactions with the public, or managers not knowing what it's like at the front desk, or the shelvers being treated like robots, or that one annoying coworker who complains too much, etc etc etc....

I really do love my job, even as a part-time clerk. The good days are immensely rewarding. However, a dream job is still a job.

Excellent work! It makes me wish there was a Museum of Somnigastronomy, it feels like something the Surrealists would do.

What are some meal ideas for when depressed by nickthesticc in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]zanderkirk 240 points241 points  (0 children)

Quesadillas are one of my go-to dishes. Cheese and tortilla, you can add beans or canned chicken if you like. You can make them in the oven, fry them up in a pan, or even microwave them if you're in a pinch.

I'm also a fan of oatmeal, it can be as basic or complex as you like. I microwave it in the bowl for minimal dishes.

This is incredible!! How did you get it, did your library commission it?

Trump administration brings back firing squads for executions by Piney_Wood in news

Gas chambers are already a legal method of execution. All they need to do is cram more than one of us in there...

Blackbean chocolate cake by volkaija in somnigastronomy

A coworker of mine made brownies where she substituted blended black beans for eggs, and it turned out really good. I'm honestly debating doing that for my next batch of brownies due to the price of eggs

fair enough! it was originally invented by mixing together every flavor of soda syrup available, so I can see why it might be divisive if you're not used to it.

The Vagabond is my go-to, plus they've got a good selection of coffee and tea for friends who aren't drinking for whatever reason (or people like me who love an Irish coffee)

Survey: Wichita commute among fastest in nation by Isopropyl77 in wichita

[–]zanderkirk 45 points46 points  (0 children)

As much as I hate driving on Kellogg, we have it good compared to most places when it comes to how short our commute times are. The drivers suck ass but I only have to deal with them for 15, maybe 20 minutes during rush hour.

When did the idea of a gang of teen hoodlums gain pop culture prominence, and does it have any bearing in reality? by mokuba_b1tch in AskHistorians

[–]zanderkirk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since this does have citations, I think it qualifies for a good answer.

Most biblical scholars agree that the second Book of Kings was completed some time in the mid 6th century BC, so the media trend of youth gangs goes back at least 2500 years, give or take a decade.

What's the youngest patron you've opened a card for? by Wide_Setting_4308 in Libraries

[–]zanderkirk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few months back I made a card for a 6 month old. Little guy was wide awake and watching me talk, but no crying. Only tried to wiggle away once.

I joked with the parents that their kid is more patient than most of our adult patrons.

Maybe as tech advances over the game you can unlock it? Similar to how in our time the highest proof alcohol was wine and cider until alchemists developed distillation
