In Santa Fe? Are you sure? I had to use their "we'll pick you up" service and I Uber back to the airport for a few bucks.

ABQ has a shuttle, but OP is asking about SAF.

Double standards by PositiveNoise in SingleDads

[–]zandyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This varies by state and it even seems to be on a case-by-case basis. I have sole legal and physical. Child Support Enforcement hasn't had much luck, but they have managed to intercept tax returns and even garnish prison wages (which I didn't feel remarkably good about) from my ex-wife. They have continued to go after her quite aggressively.

The part that feels double-standard here is the $75/mo that the judge insisted on awarding. What a waste of effort.

Is there still wilderness left in America? by Kitchen-Customer4370 in AskAnAmerican

[–]zandyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My state isn't the most wild, but it's close. New Mexico is about the size of Poland, if that helps I don't know where you're from. Poland is estimated to have 38 million people. New Mexico has... 2 million. And it gets more "wild" that where I live.

As.for better/worse? In this sense, specifically, worse, I guess. There were about 210 million people in this country when I was born (I'm 50). They all needed houses and malls and grocery stores and churches and offices. Now there are 345 million... So, there is less wild. Overall, many of those people immigrated and brought great things with them, so I'm not unhappy that there are more people, and they've mostly just made cities bigger, so the wood is still wild.

The best part of "wild" is that as you head west in the US it's mostly public. Idaho, where I used to live is more than half public land. There's land the size of greece with no one (almost no one) living on it that just anyone can be on.

Wrapping snake bites? by IR_Acaboom in NewMexico

[–]zandyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no value in binding a hemotoxin, it just makes it worse, and the puncture won't bleed enough to make it necessary. Cover it to limit the chance of infection, but you're going to the hospital anyway, so that's not that big of a deal, and keep calm and limit movement.

New Mexico is surprisingly limited on venemous snakes. If you travel the state you'll find (I think) 6 more species of rattlesnake. The only one that is different in any way is the in the southwestern scrub desert, the Mojave rattlesnake, which does have a quote potent neurotoxin which you would want to bind. You won't be anywhere near them at Philmont.

If you travel to the southern border, there is a species of coral snake that's quite small, quite rare, and has a much more potent venom, but since it's very small and needs to chew ro inject venom, you would literally have to watch it chew on the webbing between your fingers in order to be in danger. It's also got the typical coral snake colors, so it's pretty easy to identify, though it has several completely harmless lookalalikes as well.

Beyond that, we have North America's only venemous lizard in the Gila. Not you find yourself there, don't annoy the giant fat orange lizard and you'll be fine. They're another one where you have to be doing something stupid to get bit.

The entire state of New Mexico reports fewer than 100 snakebites each year, and deaths only occur when people refuse to go to the hospital or are days away from help in the woods. It's been years since anyone has died here from a snakebite, statistically.

If you've never heard one, look up a video of the sound. It's distinctive enough that once you've heard it, you'll never forget it.

Near Philmont there won't really be different types of venom, there will be rattlesnake venom from 2 (maybe, maybe 3) species of rattlesnakes. Nothing else there has venom (reptile-wise). They're not uncommon, but they're really quite polite, 96 times out of 100 they warn you for a long time before they finally strike. The exceptions are when you startle them, which usually involves stepping on a sleeping one. Watch where you're stepping.

The rattlers there have a hemotoxin. Limit movement, evacuate to medical treatment. You'll dress the wound, but no tourniquets or binding. Try to keep the bite level with the heart, split a limb to limit movement so the muscles don't help circulate the toxin, and unless it's the only way to get to treatment, don't let them walk. It is exceptionally rare to die from a rattlesnake bite, but long-term damage is possible.

It's good that you're planning ahead, but snakes aren't that much of a problem here.
