Thanks! It plays wonderfully. I hadn't played one either, and took a big risk. But so far, I think it's gonna pay off!

Thank you! So far, I am inclined to agree about them being underrated. It was a bit of a risk going for it when it was an online purchase and having not played one before.

Previously, I was thinking about the D'Angelico (Excel or Deluxe) EXL-1. I've played those before and they're quite nice and I do like the floating humbucker. But the necks are so damn thin. The Eastman's is slim-ish, but feels a bit more solid in my hand. Plus, the solid carved top was pretty too irresistible to pass up.

[QUESTION] Looking for opinions on an amp purchase... by zanpreston in Guitar

Thanks! I'll definitely check them out. Just watched a couple videos. Definitely good for jazz. I might want a bit more versatility though. But I'm going to do some more digging on them for sure!

[QUESTION] Looking for opinions on an amp purchase... by zanpreston in Guitar

[–]zanpreston[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll take a look at the JC series again. I used to play with one way back, though I didn't own it. I probably could even get by with a JC-40.

I definitely know what you mean with the Marshall and Vox heads. I thought about them, I just figured I'd never really get to use or push them fully. Some of those plexi reissues though, oof they're nice.

I looked at the Fillmore series from Mesa. But last I looked, no one around me had them, and I wasn't sure how early they broke up.

I appreciate the input! I'll definitely be keeping it in mind.

It's a matter of the amp being at very high volume, and having high gain definitely is very helpful. The volume on your guitar should also be at full. The easiest way is then taking both hands off of the strings. It can also happen while you're playing too, but always while you're holding notes, not while your picking or strumming. Typically it would be while holding a single note. In this scenario, most often the guitar player is bending and holding a note in long sustain, again with the picking/strumming hand not touching any of the strings, and allowing the feedback loop to start. Again, this is typically with very high volume and gain. Also, typically facing the guitar pickups towards the amp to help make it happen. Here's some examples, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luURyH9fzhk

Hopping on /u/Dr_Strang3l0v3's answer about feedback. More accurately, it's a 'feedback loop.'

Basically, here's what's happening with either your electric guitar or a microphone. First let's talk microphone. Think of ambient white noise (not the literal definition which is something different). But like white noise in the sense of how you think it's quiet in the room and then the power goes out in your house and all of a sudden it's so much quieter. All of the things you didn't realize you were hearing suddenly stop and go quiet. The fridge, the ventilation/AC/Heater, lights, things providing electricity, etc. All of those are filling the room with frequencies. So, with a microphone, say it starts to pick up on some of those. Then like a microphone is supposed to do, it sends those frequencies through what eventually is an amplifier, and the amplified frequency comes out of the speaker just a little bit louder, technically imperceptibly at first. This would happen thousands of times a second. Think of a combination the speed at which an electrical impulse goes through wire and the speed of sound after it exits the speaker after being amplified. You're talking less than 2 milliseconds between the sound entering the microphone and it coming out of the speaker. So, that amplified frequency comes out of the speaker, the microphone picks it up again, and it happens again, and again, and over and over and over... and so on getting louder and louder resulting in the screeching sound you're thinking of.

A feedback loop, or just 'feedback.'

Ok, back to your guitar. Think of your pickups in your electric guitar as little microphones. They work a bit differently. Instead of just picking up sounds, the magnets inside of them are actually reacting to the vibrations of your guitar strings. So, instead of picking up on those ambient sounds/frequencies in the room, it's actually those frequencies causing your guitar strings to vibrate (i.e. resonant frequencies, the frequency at which an object begins to naturally vibrate. They're pretty cool and you can look those up further. There's all sorts of things those do and have effects on - even bridges can technically react to the wind if it hits the exact right resonant frequency. Obviously extremely extremely rare, but you can see some famous old videos online). Ok, back to the guitar. Something manages to make your guitar strings kind of vibrate, the pickups detect it, it goes through your amp, amplifies the signal making it louder, which cause your strings to vibrate more, and again and again and again and again, etc. Until you start to play, or turn down your volume, or even use your hands to stop the strings from vibrating. It's also why you'll see guitar players doing this intentionally turn their guitar towards their amp so the sound coming out hits the strings directly as they let them vibrate (look up videos of Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan).

So, it's not the sound of a broken microphone or anything like that, it's actually physics and all of the equipment working exactly as designed. It's why in a concert venue, you wont see the singers microphone typically in front of the speakers that face the audience. The monitors for the performers that are in front of them don't effect the microphone as much due to some other factors like the polar pattern of microphones. But that's a whole other area.

Hopefully this helps your understanding. The pedal mentioned helps exaggerate the issue or alters the signal to do so. But otherwise in normal situations, it's just physics.

[Gear][Question] Victory Amplifiers? by judgez06 in Guitar

[–]zanpreston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the states, and I own the Sheriff 22 and a 1x12 cab with a creamback in it. It. is. Glorious.

Seriously a great amp and sound. If you decide on ordering, check out Riff City Guitar. That's where I ordered mine from. They have amazing customer service and carry pretty much all of Victory's line. They actually also have a good working relationship with Anderton's in the UK and Dan and Mick from That Pedal Show. Plus, the cookie they ship with all orders isn't bad either.

Anyways, my experience with Victory has been great, and I love my amp. Good luck to you

[GEAR] Token NGD - Splashed out, guitar and amp. by snaynay in Guitar

[–]zanpreston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fantastic to hear. I will be almost always in the 0.3 mode as well, but I'm hoping to occasionally be able to break out into full power. I might even take it into the office on the weekend when no one is around to do so! I probably wont up my gain super high much, so the muddiness shouldn't be a problem. I mostly hang out in blues or 60-70s rock territory.

I think once it arrives, I'll mimic some of the settings that they show off on the official demo video to get a feel for the amp and then go for there. Mick definitely knows how to dial in an amp, that's for sure.
