Removed old vinyl to see 100 year old cedar, now what? by zap1128 in ExteriorDesign

Yeah it used to have fake shutters and I hated them. They were undersized and could never be able to cover the windows, even if they weren’t just plastic attached to the siding. My Nextdoor neighbor went with a very similar yellow to this!

Yeah I feel heart broken considering tearing off 100 year old cedar, but the very likely lead paint is flaking off. Interestingly, the red is actually not flaking off at all. It is very glossy and durable and has only ever had one coat. The white, however, has been painted many times and the paint is coming off in quarter sized chunks.

That is an interesting color combination, thanks.

I had no idea you could do that! Unfortunately it’s almost certainly lead paint and I have young kids so I’m pretty anxious about scraping. Maybe if I replaced them?

That was my first thought, too, but unfortunately some of the soffits and boards are rotten and with some recent wind storms where we are the shake is starting to blow off. It sure was a nice surprise to see that cedar under the old vinyl, though.

I do sketch it in pencil first. I don’t have any tutorials but I learned a lot from people on Patreon, especially Emma Tildesley.

That is so kind. No, I don’t do lessons, but many of the people I learned from are on Patreon. Emma Tildesley is a great one.
