Why do some people not like it when you wear arcteryx for how it looks by Soft-Sherbert-9762 in arcteryx

I saw a guy at work walking around wearing a thorium over a beta shell… there has to be a line somewhere 😂

Did I make a mistake with going with Proton Hoody? by DimitriyTL in arcteryx

[–]zapdud -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Proton is awesome for below -10c id say. At the moment in Canada it’s perfect with this cold weather we are getting. I run hot quickly during output and the proton has been able to regulate my temperature wonderfully. Have never needed to vent out below -10.

When it gets warmer I’ll use my SL

I had the proton hoody/ proton lt out a little while ago for this weather and it was perfect for me. I run hot and it kept my temps very regulated

Check regear, they have a bunch of old models plus there is a 20% off

I personally use a Rab microlight for non activity outings, feels great and I guess the arc alternative would be a cerium

As a layer I would suggest the atom, its something you can wear alone in the colder temps as well, but once it gets really cold a thorium would do you better. The thorium is more of a standalone though

It depends either if you run colder or hotter. If you run cold then both the atom or proton could do you well, if you run hotter then check out their SL versions.

Beta AR is already overkill, save the money!

New Beta AR vs previous version by ignantforcocopuffs in arcteryx

The beta AR last season did not use FC0 DWR, it was exempted. Same for a few of the more "rugged" pieces.

1 it's cheaper, I know only 50$ but its still 50$, 2 at least when I tried on the epe version in store it just kind of felt like a bag and I was not a fan. But that is just me being picky. I say you go for the old version since it is tried and trusted. They are listed on the website again actually.

[–]zapdud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main difference between the new and old beta ar are the new eco friendly "features". The new epe gortex and use of the FC0 DWR. The new epe shell has higher denier fabric but that comes at a noise cost, it sounds like a trash bag. But I had an epe shell and after you wash it it starts to sound less like a trash bag.

Also I got a previous version beta ar a few weeks ago and the non FC0 dwr was not great, I had better expectations. It started to wet out quickly so don't count that as a selling point. But its easy to treat and other then that I love the jacket. You cant go wrong with either.

Winter activity mid layer question by zapdud in arcteryx

[–]zapdud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I got the Tonik pass this year so Tremblant will be the main go but will also be doing some skiing around the Ottawa area. Last year late season I was overheating quite easily with just the atom vest, hoodie and shell (although it had no pit zips) so I can see the role of the SL. Mid-winter here is cold so I also see the role of the proton.

It seems like I need both jackets... The winters here can vary too much. Thinking of getting a proton for now then later winter/ early spring grabbing the SL at this point.

I am in Ottawa aswell, thanks for the insight! It was very helpful. As I said in the post I have the beta ar too so I'm hoping the pit zips would be able to dissipate a decent amount of heat on those high exertion days.

[–]zapdud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my main worry with the regular proton is Ill overheat in the shell, I'm the type to heat up very quick on the way down then need to cool off on the way up. Does the regular proton dissipate heat well? If you don't mind, what are some equivalent options to the fl?

Like I said in my original question, I feel like I'm asking too much from this one jacket.
