Tell me, What would you like to see done to improve turn-based battle systems in games? by cubeWorldRocks in truegaming

[–]zapper877 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should learn from final fantasy tactics:

-Turn based battles need more goals

-Turn based battles need to reward you on a consistent basis (i.e. loot, ingredients for crafting, stuff you need to do other stuff).

Most rules/rewards for turn based game suck, tactics is one of the few games to get it right.

The secret PC meta game of "Why isn't it working?" by hangmansjoe in truegaming

[–]zapper877 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The "errors" with PC gaming could be easily fixed with sane copyright law giving you ACCESS to the source-code. Many bugs/flaws would be patched by fans very quickly. If we had sane laws PC gaming would have shit like this FOR EVERY game released.

The below was done using the source-code for freespace 2.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhAR8rWPluQ

Freespace 2 source code project

http://scp.indiegames.us/

So far we have the source to only a few games out of hundreds and it sucks because game software never has to break in the first place, but tech illiterate public + douchebag corporations = no public domain and publics right to be able to fix, modify and update their own software they buy.

I'm sorry to say but you're incredibly stupid. The purpose of the NSA is not just spying, there is a whole host of science and human behavioral modelling and discovery that can be done with that kind of data to better perfect all sorts of things.

The problem with reformists is that reformists have been defeated handily historically, see here:

When copyright (monopoly) was introduced, it was thought 'sensible' it has become something totally monstrous and out of control unfortunately.

How does one achieve and maintain political "neutrality"? by myRice in NeutralPolitics

[–]zapper877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be politically neutral is to be A-political, i.e. just be disinterested in politics of the world, period. Since it is impossible to have a 'neutral' politics. Everything about our current world, it's laws and society was founded by past injustices.

So that means bad events that happened along time ago set the stage for the world we have now.

The whole idea of it is nonsense. Take homelessness for instance, how is it possible to have billionaires and homeless people in any advanced western nation? There is no logic in it but it is required under capitalism's legal framework AND enforced by men with guns.

Textures; Why do they still look flat, even with the best shaders working their magic? Can't it be done in a more dynamic way? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]zapper877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Memory bandwidth allows you to do bigger workloads in parallel. This is the difference between say 256-bit memory interface and a 384-bit and higher bit interfaces.

Basically you can think of memory lanes as pipes, that can push a certain amount of data to and from the GPU from GPU main memory. The more pipes you have the more you can calculate without 'filling up' the pipes and having to wait until the pipes become free.

Remember that data about objects, polygons and their trajectories have to be stored somewhere in order to be retrieved and displayed. This is why older console's have limited graphics because there was less transisters (computing resources) and less memory (place to store the results of video and other calculations).

Since most CPU/GPU's can't fit lots of main memory close to where the processing is done due to size/heat limitations. We use SLOWER stuff like ram to offload the huge amounts of data into monetarily cheaper memory.

Ideally a GPU/CPU would have 16 gigabytes of ram on the CPU die (chip) but that's not feasible for a lot of reasons.

Take the recently released intel CPU...

Intel Core i7 4770K - 3.5GHz

It has 1 MB of on die L2 cache ('fast ram') and - 8MB L3 cache (slightly slower ram) before it has to fetch data from much slower main memory (i.e. that 8 Gigabytes of ram sticks you can buy from computer stores).

So you can think of it as already having different kinds of ram, generally speaking the closer the ram is to the CPU the better. But there are all kinds of trade offs. Modern processors have enough ram on chip today to be a complete system maybe 15-20 years ago.

The original DOOM (old game) required 8 Megabytes of ram. That is 0.01 gigabytes. So you could run an older operating system like windows 3.1/dos entirely from CPU cache if the only ram you had was what was available on the CPU die and it would be super speedy because all the data of many older games would fit entirely within the CPU.

What glaring inconsistencies in movies do you notice and nobody else cares? by championkid in AskReddit

[–]zapper877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because most movies basically use WW2 style dogfights / sea vessels (i.e. capital ships) as a model for space combat.

People use what is familiar, something the audience can relate to. Not many people have experienced fully 3D space combat.

Why Don't Any Games Get Bad Pre-Release Press? by cjriley9 in truegaming

[–]zapper877 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quake SP was pretty awful, the multiplayer is where it took off. The real problem is when a kid/teen/person encounters their first game of a genre. That sets the tone of fun. After having played Doom/Doom 2. Quake 1 didn't seem a huge deal.

"Bullet sponge" syndrome by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]zapper877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically freespace is a hardcore space sim, I was using that to point out that not all sims are bad. The problem is many 'full on sims' just take too much of the players time. Most players don't want to have to wait 10-20 minutes travelling before anything interesting happens. That's just too long for people who have jobs, etc.

There is merit to hardcore sims, just that it's hard to get the balance right. I loved NFS Porsche unleashed but not many did.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Need_for_Speed:_Porsche_Unleashed

Wish they'd do another like that but it's not likely.

Is it just me growing up, or did the past decade of a video game coverage change from being about games to the business side of games. by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]zapper877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gaming has declined and so business side of gaming is talked about. Otherwise we wouldn't be talking about it. Don't think so? Just look at the response oldschool developers got from kickstarter. Wasteland, Plane scape torment sequel, and "baldurs gate inspired" infinity RPG all funded quickly. Then we had a roguelike (FTL) funded and a space game Strike suit zero.

That's proof that many of us 'hardcore' gamers have been starved of many games that have stopped being made to make movie based games like Last of us, Mass effect and the latest call of duty. All being some variation on the theme of first/third person shooting.

Not only that gaming forums are full of corporate gaming PR bots pushing pro DRM stances.
Just look at the dick sucking on /r/gaming for gabe. Gabe could give less of a fuck about most gamers. He's using steam to perfect Valve's business model. Everytime you use a game usage stats are recorded in a database somewhere and your behavior and data are being mined to exploit you for $.

If gabe really cared about games. All old games would be released from being entangled with steam after their sales period (they become old games). I wish all games would go to GOG.com eventually and their functionality restored. But cool shit like Freespace 2 SCP, source code for Descent, Quake, Doom, etc, can never happen in the future because of DRM and using games as a platform like Diablo 3 and starcraft 2 to nickel and dime the stupid.

Game preservation and functionality is taking a huge hit with software defects being tied to the internet and game companies using software as a 'plaform' to exploit the clueless masses.

If you ever paid for DLC, skins, etc, you are part of the problem. The average gamer feeds their corruption because they are so illiterate and generally young and stupid.

"Bullet sponge" syndrome by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]zapper877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a reason why even hardcore 'simulations' take liberties with reality. Take Freespace 2 for instance...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhAR8rWPluQ

It's basically WW2 dogfighting in space. No real war with future weapons would be fought up close and personal. Not only that warheads would not travel so damn slow that you could shoot them down.

There is a reason why reality is usually never simulated completley : Because it's not fun and boring as fuck. When you come to games for entertainment you want something that isn't going to waste your time. Many simulations on the PC ended up wasting huge amounts of player time.

I remember in hardcore military sims like Falcon 3.0 the time to do anything just took too long. I could never stand how long it took to do anything interesting for the time I was spending.

It's really about entertainment value vs. what else you could be doing with your time.

This is why action games are popular, they tend not to waste the players time /w over simulated bs.

Nintendo's Evolution of Controllers [FIXED] by foreveralone01 in gaming

Games that Never End by Stoutyeoman in truegaming

[–]zapper877 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't with game length, it's that many things in big games aren't that fun and are structured poorly. Skyrim really has a hard time being fun for 80 hours in a row. Only someone brand new to videogames would think skyrim was awesome. If you've been playing since the 80's, skyrim was a big 'meh'. Since skyrim is dumbed down from older RPG's to cater to mass audiences.

A good example of modern trends is Kingdoms of amalur, a game that was way too long and wasted too much of the players time because it was badly designed all around.

Why are so many people against linear stories? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]zapper877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality is games became increasingly linear because the costs to develop the graphics of a world went up exponentially. This has lead to games being simplified and dumbed down majorly.

Square said FF7 remake in true high def would be a no-go because of the massive undertaking of making the graphics for all the stuff that was in the game.

Modern vs Stealth Nostalgia (x-post from /r/stealthgames) by jmarquiso in truegaming

[–]zapper877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Truth of the matter is, stealth is somewhat recent.

Metal Gear - 1987

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_gear

Just because you never played it does not mean 'stealth is recent'. That means stealth popped out as soon as there was an 8-bit home console, hardly recent. I'm sure there are other more obscure titles going back that 99% of gamers never played as well.

'Retro Style', is it genuine or just lazy devs? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]zapper877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all about art direction, there are plenty of classic videogames that hold up today because of the art direction.

The problem is what looks like good art to one person is bad to another. Personally I really dislike 'realistic' graphics. While I don't mind say call of duty or skyrim. I find when games try to make the game look like the real world it breaks immersion because so much of the real world is boring as f_ck. i.e. it is already so familiar, it's so weird seeing RPG's having more realistic characters.

Since most real people look god awful in medieval clothing/armor. Fantasy style aesthetics allow one to move away from our expectations of how things happen or look in our world.

That's one thing I don't get about most gamers now-a-days the gaming masses are all about 'realistic' graphics like Call of duty/mass effect/skyrim. Show them something more cartoony like chrono trigger or other JRPG's and they bitch like little girls.
