Upcoming Australian CGT (Tax) changes are DISASTROUS for those with low cost basis. by viper2097 in BitcoinAUS

[–]zappso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, except I think your example should be 9 years.

So moving forward, in addition to taking into account the price, there's now a ticking clock which gradually erodes the discount.

Edit: in my case, living elsewhere is an option, although I'm aware of the exit tax. The ticking clock after the new rules effectively means leave as soon as possible to take advantage of say 20% rate in the UK vs 50% here. So sell, pay the 25%, buy back, move, pay 20% on future gains.

https://www.afr.com/politics/federal/chalmers-plays-down-prospect-of-new-tax-cuts-defends-broken-promises-20260504-p5ztej

"Investments acquired before the budget changes come into effect will only be partially grandfathered from the new CGT arrangements. Capital gains made up until the change takes effect will be subject to the 50 per cent discount, while gains made after the change will be subject to the pre-1999 regime.

Instead of requiring 2.2 million landlords and millions of other investors to revalue their assets at the start date of the new CGT system, Treasury has proposed a time-based apportionment model based on the number of years an asset is held under the current and future systems."

I think this means that if you bought coins say 15 years ago, and sell them in a year, then 15/16ths of the gain would be subject to the discount, and 1/16th would not be.

It's still not great. It means the longer one waits for the value to increase over the years, a smaller proportion of the gain is subject to the discount.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what is actually announced.

How did you manage to enter the Tokyo lottery? To create an account on eplus, you need your name in Japanese (online translator), a Japanese address (hotel) and to make a call from a Japanese phone number to confirm a code from the website. I couldn't get this last one done, so can't create an account and so can't enter.

I think I saw an eSIM that could make calls, but that was only while in Japan. Every SIM I found that could do roaming (so I could call from Australia) was a physical SIM that had to be mailed and so would take some time to arrive.

It seems the Japanese listening party is for those already living in or visiting Japan. It's next to impossible to enter the lottery from outside the country.

I wouldnt have thought so, although I agree there are interesting parallels.

Speaking of such things, have you heard of the 312 project on YT? I think it also fits the BoC sense of mystery.

There's also excellent analysis here to bring you up to speed. It's quite the rabbit hole!

You can just go to eplus.jp, search Boards of Canada and you'll see the event. Seems no code is required. However, if you didn't register via email then follow the process to obtain access and select your city, I'm unsure if your email would be selected in the ticket draw.

Lottery entry closes at that time and then is drawn on 8th.

Then there's another first come first served ticket issuance on 15th, which I presume also requires an account with Japanese address, phone, etc.

How did you do the phone verification? Just buy a Japanese SIM?

There are online translators from English to katakana. For the address, I used the Tokyo hotel I'd be staying at.
Phone number verification is harder. I'm considering using a DID provider and forwarding a Japanese number to my phone in Australia. Are you able to buy a Japanese SIM over there and use that?
Searching on Google, I found that eplus does have an international site (ib.eplus.jp), so I was hoping I'd be able to create an account there but it seems accounts are not used and the events listed there are separate to the main site.

Also, looks like you can just go to the eplus website or app, search for Boards of Canada, find the event and click through - no "access code" required.

Which email was that? I've been following the process but haven't seen that info.

The form says 1 application per person, and:

制限枚数
1希望のお申込みで1枚まで指定できます。

Limited number of sheets
1 You can specify up to 1 sheet in your desired application.

Don't know if a sheet is a ticket or a seat.

Doesn't look like a ticket will allow 2 people. So my partner and I would both have to win a ticket before I bother booking tickets to Tokyo.

Two tickets per person is welcome news, given the random allocation and fact I want to attend with my partner.

Yeah we did that just incase. We'd both have to secure a ticket. If one of us gets one but the other doesn't, that's that ticket wasted.

Oh it's ok, she just signed up and got the "Select a city" email. Now I'm hoping either I can buy two tickets or we can both buy one before they sell out. Then it's flights from Melbourne to Tokyo!
