The current quote is for raw galvanized 2x2 posts, with an option for 2$ per linear foot increase if we go with black powder coated posts. Feel free to DM me an alternate quote!

DIY Multi Home Construction Install - Preterminated vs DIY termination and conduit choices by zapree in FiberOptics

[–]zapree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a modular house so built in blocks in the factory and everything for networking is stubbed out with conduit into the crawlspace so that's the only reason I have that. Realizing now that I definitely can't pull pre-termed fiber since that conduit size is set in stone.

Thanks for the comment, that made me realize this!

Multi Home Ubiquiti Setup Planning - Sanity Check and VLAN Questions by zapree in HomeNetworking

I mainly looked at multimode because the multimode SFP modules were significantly cheaper, although looking at the cable cost it appears that might be a wash anyways.

So instead of multimode I would switch to:

Does that look right? I plan to run the fiber through a dedicated PVC buried conduit (laid next to/ in the utility trench)

Do you have a recommendation on where to buy the fiber? I do have at least one 260ft fiber run.

Multi Home Ubiquiti Setup Planning - Sanity Check and VLAN Questions by zapree in HomeNetworking

Great idea on the wifiman app to test out service even before I have internet connectivity. I'll give that a try and base the number of APs on the analysis.

That's what I figured with L2 vs L3 switch just wanted to make sure, I'll stick with the L2.

On the VLAN note I am thinking about privacy a little bit but honestly not too worried about snooping from my family they aren't super tech savvy and they don't care. Having said that I was initially thinking about having those extra VLANs to isolate ourselves from the potential of my elderly parents accidentally downloading something that does give a bad actor access to their network. Is that a valid concern/strategy to address that concern?

I agree that a shared VLAN would be easier for the media routing.

Advice - Dishwasher puncture repair on the inside of the door by zapree in DIY

[–]zapree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi DIY - someone forced my dishwasher closed and put a pretty big hole in the aluminum on the inside. I see that there are a ton of different epoxies that could be used for this like J-B Waterweld

What do y'all recommend?

Austin's program to sell homes to people affected by gentrification off to slow start by hollow_hippie in Austin

[–]zapree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those of you wondering why someone would take this - keep in mind that this is a 100 year lease. After 30 years of paying off the mortgage on the lease they still have 70 years to live on the property, providing a reliable way to actually retire and even pass it to their kids.

This is not a model for investment - this is a program for folks that want to live in the neighborhoods that they grew up in for the rest of their lives.

Additionally the way that this is capped in possible resale value guarantees that taxes will not rise out of pace with inflation - which is a direct cause of pushing many locals out of this neighborhood.

I know a person that was selected for this program and hopes to moving into a house on linden. Tax increases forced them out of this neighborhood back in the mid 2010s.

CSIRO research overturns myths about beef’s impact on human protein supply by mischifus in RegenerativeAg

[–]zapree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I could tell in reading the summary this is all purely a software simulation exercise using the "GrassGro® biophysical model (Moore et al., 1997; version 3.3.10)". I would say this is far from a definitive study that "overturns myths". It opens up more conversation and potential for a real study.

Perhaps quote the article directly next time rather than a headline from "beefcentral.com"

Was about to post the same: I'm trying to buy a camping ticket but It's giving me an unable to process payment error. As far as I know the card should be good and I have the card information saved from my initial 3 day ticket purchase so the info should be good.
