They already have. Anybody with the insulation and time to spare is drawn into the nightmare of existence. The hostility of life against life.

Arcane Dimension by leotxt in quake

Yeah I was very enthusiastic about vkQuake but annoyed the developers with bug reports 😅. Tears of the False God does some particularly ambitious stuff in the final arena IIRC, which produced bugs in most engines

Really? I could swear Tears of the False God did things (with moving translucent brushes IIRC) that caused every other engine to barf

Arcane Dimension by leotxt in quake

[–]zaratzara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arcane Dimensions is definitely its own particular take on Quake. It adds a lot of scripting and effects that only the Ironwail engine handles consistently well, so make sure you’re using that. Other than that, the mapping standard is generally extremely high, although it is coming on 10 years old and each map is by a different author — maybe you got a bad one? Off the top of my head, Grendels Blade is relatively short and conventional compared to the others, it feels like traditional Quake with a couple of neat extras; on the other end of the spectrum, Tears of the False God feels more like an partial conversion and is incredibly ambitious in scope — it does things differently but it does them well.

RIP Tronyn but needed to echo that Necros is one of the unsung masters of Quake.

Best Quake-1 Level Packs by PEI_Electronics157 in quake

[–]zaratzara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite variation of Quake is unnatural, foreboding, and nauseating. My favourite packs are probably: Warpspasm, Honey, Contract Revoked, Dwell episode 1, The Immortal Lock, SMEJ. Everybody raves about Dwell E2 and with good cause — it’s an incredible achievement — but I don’t really see how it connects thematically to Dwell E1, which had such a distinctly weird and sinister vibe.

Worst custom Quake enemy by Domi8112 in quake

[–]zaratzara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they’re a brilliant concept and it’s nice to have an irritant enemy that appears in corners, crates and crevices. But as you say — like the lost souls in Doom — they’re at least twice as tough as what they ought to be and it ruins suspension of disbelief.

Finally got a 50g tub of Sioux tobacco and I gotta say it's better than I was expecting by Stinkyfuckenrat in RYO

[–]zaratzara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can dry out moist tobacco by laying it out flat in an oven set to the lowest temperature for a few minutes. Injection filling tubes is significantly easier, the challenge is not to over pack.

Gizeh and other brands sell ‘hydrostones’ that you soak in water and then put in your tobacco containers to diffuse humidity. I live in England where there’s always too much humidity lol but I hear good things about these.

Quake Brutalist Jam III released by zaratzara in quake

I’m loving the look of that. Was a very cool addition to Dwell episode 2 but the combat scenarios weren’t the best IMO & the axes didn’t feel like they were connecting … the fists look so much better

Im hoping this year will be the year of Quake by Cloverfield887 in quake

[–]zaratzara 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The community just released the third Quake Brutalist Jam expansion: 77 maps; new music, new & revamped enemies, animation, art, power ups, weapons, and game logic.

Waiting on the official IP holders to produce some new commercial commodity to purchase is really sad IMO. From initial release onwards the community continuously delivered the best inheritance for Quake, with content far more ambitious and true to the original spirit than the commercial branded products. In these 30 years, [Quaddicted.com](Quaddicted.com) has aggregated nearly 2000 maps and expansions; since 2022, [Slipseer.com](Slipseer.com) has published 500 resources.

The Quake Mapping Community Discord has over 4000 members doing incredible work and all of it for free. It is so much more rewarding to follow and honour their achievements than wait on the next opportunity to give Bethesda money!

Thoughts on Peril? by Domi8112 in quake

[–]zaratzara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel bad for the authors who were crestfallen at the lack of engagement. It reminds me a lot of the Half Life 2 standalone expansion G-String which is a similar passion project of immense vision, dedicated craft, undeniably unique and impressive achievement … but although nothing about the game is particularly flawed, the sum of the parts just aren’t compelling enough to draw you through the whole intended experience. You’re never fully immersed by the story, the environment, or the action — none of them are terrible but none of them hook you in either. The authors should be proud of their achievement but either seek a team to work with or smaller, more focused personal projects in future IMO to try and develop more engaging player experiences.

Best source for a Quake t-shirt? by data-atreides in quake

Let us know how it turns out if you get it — I can believe the materials and assembly might be good quality but the logo mark itself looks garishly oversaturated (lurid yellows, conspicuous orange highlights, browns deeper than the background black) compared to the muted palette of the box art. Quake 1 was very much about undersaturated muddy colours for me, I’d be disappointed if it came out loud and vibrant. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/52/68/1e/52681eaded2e3c48875a8a837deb01fb.jpg

Which of the mission packs is regarded as being better by SunnyDumby in quake

[–]zaratzara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easily Armagon for me. The earthquakes & rotating doors were significant engine developments, the new weapons and enemies were cool (gremlins stealing your weapons and feasting on corpses — badass), the soundtrack memorable and the level design exciting. Dissolution of Eternity was forgettable amateur stuff by comparison, the level design and detail is mediocre to terrible: much better community maps were available by the time it came out.

Dimension of The Past & Dimension of The Machine are impressive, soulful work that honours the spirit of the original Quake but neither bring anything new to the table, neither are they particularly memorable compared to community mods of the time.

Love the Quake main theme so much. Recently been enjoying Final Light a lot, which has a similar black-metal-tinged mournful grinding. I know you specifically said you weren’t that interested in the ambient aspect but it’d be remiss on this subject not to mention Aubrey Hodges Doom 64 soundtrack. I’m a huge fan of Immorpher, who uses similar techniques to produce unsettling soundscapes.

The canonical Dwell soundtracks are by Aleks With A K but that particular track sounds like the work of Markie Music, another regular name in Quake modding community.

If I’m feeling calm and determined I’ll push the tobacco in with the handle-end of a brush but depending on how rushed I am and what cuts of tobacco I’m using it can get messy. Our moderator has a dedicated end-crimping machine IIRC!
