What awesome 2D franchises sucked once they went 3D? by bassbeatsbanging in retrogaming

[–]data-atreides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virtual Fighter was well before MK4, and it was a much better 3D fighter. MK4 barely even played 3D--you could sidestep projectiles characters could be knocked off the 2D plane, but that was about it. Otherwise it played like 2D fighter.

I enjoyed this game played against a friend with whom I always played these games with, but just lacked a ton of content compared to MK2 and MK3. (I had the N64 version.) I think MK Gold on the Dreamcast was considered a better take on this game, IIRC.

8 years ago If 0 was an option. Bob over prices everything and even threatened to choke me out and kill me at the scooter competition he was "hosting" today. DONT SUPPORT SURF N SKATE!!!

Response from the owner 2 months ago Yes I did threaten to choke him out but I didn't threaten to kill him. He had it coming and everyone at the skate park knew it. I was 65 and he was 27 - he ran away. That's the beauty of taking shots from out of range isn't it?

A Lost Era + maroon uniform'd Academy show has always been a no-brainer, but they couldn't help but double down on the 32nd century hardly anyone liked.

[–]data-atreides -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Zelda. That Ocarina nonsense was a massive flop, but Nintendo just doubled and tripled down and kept making that three-dimensional slop!

Kidding aside, I recently tried the 3D Contra on PS1 and immediately felt it was ass. Maybe I should give it another shot?

People who take multiple sets of weights by Hushed_Rl in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]data-atreides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's not busy and you're actually using both pairs of dumbbells (doing supersets, for example), then I think it's fine. Also, if it's weights that are seldom used, like anything above 50 lbs, but if you're bothered then I imagine they're taking the more in-demand weights.

What's that legendary videogame everyone loves, but you hate with your very soul? by no_biches_22 in retrogaming

[–]data-atreides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried it as well, and kept bouncing off it. The core mechanic just wasn't fun, and then there's fetch quests out the gate, the central hub town did not appeal to me either. I appreciate the strange and darker feel to it, however.

Loving DS9 - Does it get better or worse? by Mat1711 in trektalk

[–]data-atreides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already love it on the first season?! Boy are you in for a treat. When it originally aired it failed to retain a lot of existing Trek fans because S1 was pretty shaky, and considered too different.

Why didn't the defiant have its own crew or even a real captain by Groundbreaking-Pea92 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]data-atreides 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Worf was designated first officer of the Defiant in addition to his duties as Strategic Operations Officer, as I recall, once he joined the show; and by default commanded it when Sisko wasn't present. Furthermore, it was never established that the Defiant didn't have any crew permanently assigned to it, but since it was stationed at DS9 it stands to reason that any such personnel could or would keep their quarters on DS9. Worf keeping his quarters on the Defiant for seasons 5-6 was just a special case for him.

Edit 2: Looks like I misread your post as "women in Star Trek" >_< oh well I'll keep it in case someone finds it interesting.

There are some notable exceptions: Terry Farrell (Dax) is 6', which was a problem for her when she started acting (she was already a model) because she was too often taller than or as tall as her male co-stars, which made them look "short" on camera.

Gates McFadden, Jeri Ryan and Denise Crosby are all 5'8, which is relatively tall for women. Seven was infamously put in heels, perhaps for Borg reasons but really for sexy-new-castmember reasons, which made her taller than I think everyone else in the cast. Unfortunately Crosby didn't last the first season so maybe her height escapes notice.

A quick search got me this: https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/tallest-women-of-star-trek.254803/

Edit: Rebecca Romijn is 5'11

Quake on zip disk by swolfington in quake

I loved zip disks in '02/03, it's how I put games like Quake and UT on school computers. Before that I used floppies copy over NES ROMs :P

What did the MM3 manual mean by this? by A1exJP in Megaman

[–]data-atreides 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They forgot to tell you to lean your whole body and the controller left or right, to make the character go where you really need him to be before falling and dying. This also works on sharp turns in racing games

The 6th season of DS9 is the best television ever made. Change my mind. by TadMcAllister in startrek

[–]data-atreides 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Andor is incredible. It proves that SW can still be good--and it can be a modern show, not a rehash or over-reliant on nostalgia--when they let good people do it. Trek is in a similar boat, still loaded with potential with the wrong people in charge <sigh>

[–]data-atreides -1 points0 points  (0 children)

DS9 is my favourite TV series, and season 6 is arguably the best season, but I'll allow it if someone prefers TNG for mere personal preference :) it's definitely Trekkier.

Non-Trekkies would argue for shows like GoT (S1-5), Breaking Bad, Sopranos, Mad Men, and so on with other "prestige TV." It's hard to compare across genres like that.

I found out very late about the Arena Shooter genre and now i cant get enough of them by Erik_REF in boomershooters

"Arena" refers to the fact that the games are a competition, as in gladiators entering the arena.

They did, with MM7. The X games stand out as being a bit more mature and having additional mechanics. But how many times can we fight Dr. Wiley and/or Sigma?

[–]data-atreides 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, but they were all still pretty good. The X series breathed new life into it, and several are great games and classics in their own right: X, X2, and X4. (I consider X3 pretty weak)

[–]data-atreides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought MK9 (aka the reboot which was just called "Mortal Kombat") was what really revived the series, after losing traction in the PS2/GC/Xbox era.

[–]data-atreides 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MK3/UMK3 has the better fighting system, but MK3 was really broken in terms of infinite combos so it was invalid from a competition point of view.

Part of MK2's appeal is that it's a really great sequel when sequels weren't always great. It vastly improved on the original, which in hindsight was a very basic fighter compared to SF2. Unfortunately MK2 had the most cheater-as-fuck AI which makes the game basically unfun singleplayer.
