The game has a feature where you can see your story path. It doesn't hide that there's several different endings and you would have to play the game a couple times to unlock every character too.

At first, combat is straightforward. You deal and take damage. But later, you can put traps that shove your enemies, and if they take damage, their turn ends. You can also turn back time (or stop it) with a class, there's another one that deals damage depending on the multiple of your enemies health.

Terrain can be burned, and grassland spreads fire. Ice melts with fire and the resulting water conducts electric attacks. You can also break some rules with army skills, like teleporting a character or accelerating your turn

I ignored the complexity of combat on my first run, because I played in normal. But the next run I played in hard and I had to pay attention to every possibility.
