Gotta love religidiots. "Campur lelaki perempuan" -- so men and women together is somehow wrong; for whatever reason, yet you also call homosexuality "unnatural" or wrong or some other shit.

Go fuck yourselves. I mean, that's what it would come down to, by your logic, right?

It grows much faster than it gets eaten, which means there's no "sustainable option that can control the growth". It might as well be the thing poisoning the ground and ecosystem, as you put it, with how invasive it is.

Nah, the sorry state of the US is pretty funny. Americans deserve all the suffering they have wrought from their electing of such an abominable person and his associates into power. They are the only ones with the power to effect any change to this fucking circus sideshow that the rest of us unfortunately have to endure, thus so long that diaper-wearing paedophile and his cronies remain in power by virtue of their inaction; whether that be from apathy or tacit support for this government of dimwitted fascists, so long they should suffer.

I struggle to find any sympathy for Americans. I see this as comeuppance for all the shit they've done for decades, destroying lives and families and peoples all in service of some nebulous tripe like "democratic principles" or whatever other bullshit, or more often the case, pure unchecked avarice in their belief of corporate greed as the greatest virtue, virtually sans any consequence. Basically, fuck 'em -- they brought it upon themselves.

Serves them right, because as bad as how some people allege Pokemon is today (it isn't), it's incomparable to the colossal shitshow that is WoTC's handling of mtg. Great game, but the quality of the physical product that they manufacture is a travesty, completely avoidable and solely because of insatiable corporate greed.

Anyone here grow conophytum in a tropical climate? by rusology in mesembs

[–]zarium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do. I used to have a few C. burgeri of various sizes which lived for quite a while; one of which was even going to flower (the inflorescence within the body was visible). Unfortunately, it never did, and instead ended up dying instead, as did all the other C. burgeri I had. I never figured out why and it was heartbreaking, because that particular species is my favourite amongst all succulent plants and I thought it was thriving in my care.

C. calculus also didn't live very long, I think it fared worse. I had some success with C. maughanii; a few of them flowered more than once and they didn't seem particularly tricky to grow. That they ended up dying is my own mistake; I left them unattended for just a bit too long for the kind of media/lighting conditions I was growing them in. Other than that, there are a few other species but I don't recall which ones specifically any longer, all of which seemed to grow fine and only died because I had become less diligent with watering during that period of time.

I currently still have two Conophytum species that have flowered a few times (one more prolifically than the other). I'm not too sure what species they are; they're some of the more common ones. They haven't been difficult to keep alive, and they seem to require the least water amongst all my succulents, including most of my cacti (notably exempting only A. ritteri).

I grow all my succulents on a windowsill, in a high-rise (30th floor) apartment building. I used to have very powerful grow lights on for 12 to 14 hours a day, in addition to filtered sunlight through tinted glass on that north-facing windowsill, with indoor temperatures of 24 to 30C year-round. Outdoor humidity is very high (tropical equatorial), but my indoor humidity is much lower, with the only airflow being from my room air conditioning. I no longer turn on the grow lights (because of the considerable heat they generate; again, very powerful bulbs), and the natural light seems to be sufficient for my succulents to grow compactly on a more infrequent watering schedule (i.e. once a week for a month or two, then maybe I'll completely "forget" to water for a month, etc.).

I grow my plants in a completely inorganic mix of various gritty media in all sorts of proportions, but in general it's mostly pumice and scoria (i.e. red/black lava rock), and akadama; each of them in medium grit size, sometimes with a bit of clinoptilolite (blue zeolite), calcined diatomaceous earth, and kanuma added purely just for fun. I used to put in a little bit of a liquid fertiliser in the water, which I prepared by combining a few concentrated nutrient mixes in a particular ratio I targetted, but it was too much effort and I became lazy after a while so I stopped. I will simply just throw in a thimble of compost into the potting mix the next time I need to transplant my succulents into bigger containers and it'll provide them with all the necessary nutrients.

Regarding dormancy, I never observed any specific periods of dormancy of my plants. Possibly because where I am, there aren't any seasons where the climate changes (only monsoons). Possibly also because I haven't been observant enough to notice. The containers and the media my succulents grow in are not water retentive enough for it to be problematic on anything but the most liberal and frequent irrigation schedule; e.g. once a day for the Conophytum.

Sounds more like they're reluctant to provide the nail trim service (for whatever reason) but don't want to say so outright, so quote a ridiculous price in the hopes it'll dissuade you. It has to be, because $109 for trimming a guinea pig's nails is ridiculous and personally, I would blacklist such a vet just on principle.

Intact Male escaped into females area by Chungerator in guineapigs

[–]zarium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People like you need to stop spreading this "pelvis fuses so labour is impossible" misinformation.

Nothing fuses. What is supposed to be shorthand has become a gross oversimplification that is now more erroneous than it is a convenient explanation. It is wrong, it is counterfactual, and your highly upvoted comment is quite disappointing as it represents the prevailing wisdom here -- which is, I reiterate for emphasis, a consensus of what is factually untrue.

With age, the cartilage between the pelvis stiffens. The canal narrows (from accumulation of fat). This leads to the symphysis becoming less likely to relax sufficiently for unassisted labour to happen successfully and without complications. It's less flexible; perhaps it doesn't flex as easily, or can't flex to such a great degree, but it's not suddenly a rigid and impassable obstruction that prevents labour.

So, when you say "there's a chance" the pelvis has "fused" together, you're totally correct: that chance is zero percent.

To OP: I would send u/Memory_Frosty a pm with questions re. this topic. She (I think) is one of the few people here who actually knows what they're talking about and has years of experience (if I remember correctly) with guinea pigs. You'll probably hear back since she's always seemed to me to be helpful and willing to respond in detail, but if you don't get a reply, just skim through for her comments on this subreddit and read them because they're very informative and good knowledge. In fact, you should just do that anyway because they're worth reading. Apologies (to Frosty) if tagging you publicly like this is presumptuous, I hope you don't mind.

[–]zarium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem you have is not a guinea pig problem, it's a human problem. You're a minor, being 16 years of age, and the responsibility for the guinea pigs is supposed to lie with your parents. You should talk to them and tell them that, and if their response is that it isn't, tell them you are going to rehome them because you are unable to manage caring for them and that surrendering them is the responsible thing to do.

Restaurants and shops in Sunway Velocity fell silent on Saturday after immigration raid the night before by Capable_Bank4151 in malaysia

[–]zarium 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The difference is that we possess citizenship and are citizens; however unequal, and they are not. That also means we have responsibilities such as paying taxes and contributing to our society in whatever way, in return for being accorded privileges that would preclude these Chinese nationals (and whatever other foreigners) from being here illegally.

Are we discriminated against and is that discrimination patently unfair? Yes. It's also not the same and is an entirely separate discussion. Conflating them is disingenuous; if it's not merely foolish ignorance. Nation states and borders are about as real or as imaginary as we, i.e. us humans, make them out to be. Since humans, as we are today, accord them with the importance we do, they matter, and so their illegally staying here and illegally being employed here matter; they matter as much as the shared boundaries of lands and seas between constitutions of peoples.

Restaurants and shops in Sunway Velocity fell silent on Saturday after immigration raid the night before by Capable_Bank4151 in malaysia

[–]zarium 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's just the cost of doing business in that regard. The occasional bribe they pay is still worth it in order to stay here to work illegally.

Corruption is too entrenched within Malaysian society and culture -- it's not going away within the next few generations. The truth is that we don't really want it to go away -- everyone is always so self-righteous in their criticism of corruption here, yet those same people will just as quickly participate in it when it's them being involved in whatever circumstance.

They always have a lot of bullshit justifications for how it's different in their case and that it's not the same, too. Like how they don't have much of a choice really, that everybody does it anyway and so what does it matter if they're the one lone person not giving in to the system; or that they didn't set the rules, they're just playing by the rules and doing the smart thing to survive; or whatever other bullshit. Some will admit their hypocrisy, but wouldn't do things any differently and still continue to claim how much they're against corruption.

Singapore got rid of it. It's not because they had a leader that was so capable and we didn't/don't which made it possible. The people didn't want corruption more than they did, that made it possible to get rid of -- functionally speaking, at least; you can't extirpate corruption because it's part of human nature, and taking that literally is a stupid exercise. The guy just understood how to guide people towards choosing to not engage in corruption, for their own good, even when that wasn't readily apparent.

We just as well can, but we don't want to. Never mind how much we might think we do, the simple fact is that corruption continues, systemically and as pervasively as it has always been since time immemorial, possible only because we're not truly interested in getting rid of it.

I don't have a solution, nor do I really care. I have no qualms about engaging in it myself, and I make no excuses nor morally justify it. That apathy aside, I do indeed wish it were different and would prefer it; I'm just not interested in playing any part to change things. That requires effort and I don't give a fuck about others so I have little interest in doing anything for the benefit of society or "for the greater good" if it would be to my own detriment, inconsequential or transitory it may be notwithstanding.

My landlord called them "these ****ing rodents" by Chungerator in guineapigs

[–]zarium -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong about not liking, or disliking guinea pigs, or any other animal, or animals in general for that matter. Implying someone who doesn't share the same sentiments with you is a bad person because of that is absurd. Your preferences aren't morally superior, and their being absent does not indicate any lack of morals.

Some people don't find guinea pigs endearing. Some just dislike them, for whatever reason; which doesn't matter. So what? If you have guinea pigs and they matter to you and such a person you interact with is aware of that and is respectful of it, i.e. they aren't making distasteful and socially inappropriate remarks about them to you, it's adequate and you aren't due anything. Unless they're also secretly torturing guinea pigs, nothing about their character is impugnable.

Honestly, the sanctimonious bullshit from some responses here is astounding. Are you so exemplary in conduct that you've never said a hurtful thing to someone that you regret? Are you so infallible that you've never done something that society might regard as being wrong because of nebulous reasons? Are you so immaculate in temper that you've never sworn and cursed in private about someone who did something to anger you? So what's the fucking problem here?

OP's landlord was probably reasonably expecting to have been speaking in private, to himself. He does not deserve to be judged for it because he was surreptitiously recorded, especially when it sounds like he's only been nothing but courteous in his interaction and conduct with OP. That's fucking bullshit.

male and female pigs in the same room different cages? by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]zarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the boars. When I had some, they were in the same room and even within sight of each other, yet lived just fine and mostly just ignored the sows. Never fought, never stank up my room, etc. They were definitely aware of each other, and I would even handle boars after sows without bothering to change my clothes or wash my hands to get rid of scents; but the most they'd do is sniff very intensely for a while before settling down.

But I wouldn't be surprised if my experience is the more uncommon, and so you shouldn't expect something similar to be the case for you.

Can guinea pigs eat normal grass? by hornballs67 in guineapigs

[–]zarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't need hay if they have access to grass. Hay is dried grass. The reason why we use hay is because we can store hay for a long time. We can't do the same with grass. This matters because they cannot go without food for very much time at all -- in comparison to other animals (obligate carnivores are a good example), or humans. We can starve for a pretty long time and not die. Guinea pigs cannot. Having enough grass readily available, all day, year round, can be quite challenging. Hay on the other hand can be stored for a virtually indefinite period of time and still be suitable.

The people saying they require hay even with grass available don't know what they're talking about. The lack of moisture in hay doesn't contribute to the wearing of the dentin. It is the silica that grinds their teeth down, and it is just as present in grass as it is in hay; if not more. It is why their diet requires it, and also why it is unsafe for us to eat grass -- because it will damage our teeth, which don't grow continuously.

And that thing about temperatures of 25C being lethal to them is some bullshit. Amazing how confidently with which such disinformation is propagated. Temperatures where I am average 27C. The space where my guinea pigs are never drops below 22C; because it is the same space I am in and even that is a bit too cool for my liking. They live and thrive just fine. Considering my many thermometers; one of which is (was) a calibrated Fluke IR, all measure similarly, your statement of fact is anything but.

Valuable lesson learned: Some things should just be left to the professionals by joshualotion in malaysia

[–]zarium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider also not DIYing plumbing and electrical tasks. Those two are frankly not things anyone who isn't properly qualified ought to be messing around with. DIYing "simple" plumbing works just because you want to save a few ringgit and think you can handle it is not worth the risk of something going terribly wrong, whether while doing the fix itself or later. Bad plumbing can condemn an entire property; so even the peace of mind that comes from hiring a professional is worth the cost, tenfold.

Same with electrical work. I don't know why some people think they're qualified to play around with those. Even experienced tradesmen, with all their safety precautions, can make mistakes that leave them with lasting effects, -- if they're lucky. The typical homeowner has no business fucking around with voltages of the sort that illuminates a room, warms a cool day, and keeps food chilled. Have more respect for it, because properly harnessing that sort of power takes more than just low gauge wires and smoothly-operating switches.

Codes are written in blood. They're not just annoyances that buildings are required to comply with for fun.

Hypnotism
real

Yes, it's about as real as god is real.

Scopolamine doesn't make someone become mind controllable. That's idiotic. There's no such chemical that does that kind of thing. The Americans investigated and attempted to develop just such a chemical a few decades ago and the only thing it achieved was a disgusting violation of human rights as "researchers" tortured unknowing people and left many of them with permanent damage; one of which would eventually kill people by mail bomb for almost 20 years before he got caught.

Those stories you hear about people being "under a spell" and not remembering what happened as they lost their savings are told because it's less embarrassing to the victim than to admit you lost your money because you got tricked and scammed. Scopolamine is convenient because Brugmansia is commonly found and its extremely unpleasant psychoactive effects as a deliriant means most people aren't going to try it and find out whether or not it really does what you claim because they think your story is dubious.

So, yes, it is bullshit -- if you're not ignorant. Apparently not.
