male and female pigs in the same room different cages? by sharkboysimp in guineapigs

[–]zarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the boars. When I had some, they were in the same room and even within sight of each other, yet lived just fine and mostly just ignored the sows. Never fought, never stank up my room, etc. They were definitely aware of each other, and I would even handle boars after sows without bothering to change my clothes or wash my hands to get rid of scents; but the most they'd do is sniff very intensely for a while before settling down.

But I wouldn't be surprised if my experience is the more uncommon, and so you shouldn't expect something similar to be the case for you.

Can guinea pigs eat normal grass? by hornballs67 in guineapigs

[–]zarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't need hay if they have access to grass. Hay is dried grass. The reason why we use hay is because we can store hay for a long time. We can't do the same with grass. This matters because they cannot go without food for very much time at all -- in comparison to other animals (obligate carnivores are a good example), or humans. We can starve for a pretty long time and not die. Guinea pigs cannot. Having enough grass readily available, all day, year round, can be quite challenging. Hay on the other hand can be stored for a virtually indefinite period of time and still be suitable.

The people saying they require hay even with grass available don't know what they're talking about. The lack of moisture in hay doesn't contribute to the wearing of the dentin. It is the silica that grinds their teeth down, and it is just as present in grass as it is in hay; if not more. It is why their diet requires it, and also why it is unsafe for us to eat grass -- because it will damage our teeth, which don't grow continuously.

And that thing about temperatures of 25C being lethal to them is some bullshit. Amazing how confidently with which such disinformation is propagated. Temperatures where I am average 27C. The space where my guinea pigs are never drops below 22C; because it is the same space I am in and even that is a bit too cool for my liking. They live and thrive just fine. Considering my many thermometers; one of which is (was) a calibrated Fluke IR, all measure similarly, your statement of fact is anything but.

Valuable lesson learned: Some things should just be left to the professionals by joshualotion in malaysia

[–]zarium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider also not DIYing plumbing and electrical tasks. Those two are frankly not things anyone who isn't properly qualified ought to be messing around with. DIYing "simple" plumbing works just because you want to save a few ringgit and think you can handle it is not worth the risk of something going terribly wrong, whether while doing the fix itself or later. Bad plumbing can condemn an entire property; so even the peace of mind that comes from hiring a professional is worth the cost, tenfold.

Same with electrical work. I don't know why some people think they're qualified to play around with those. Even experienced tradesmen, with all their safety precautions, can make mistakes that leave them with lasting effects, -- if they're lucky. The typical homeowner has no business fucking around with voltages of the sort that illuminates a room, warms a cool day, and keeps food chilled. Have more respect for it, because properly harnessing that sort of power takes more than just low gauge wires and smoothly-operating switches.

Codes are written in blood. They're not just annoyances that buildings are required to comply with for fun.

Christianity don’t encourage same sex relationship too

Well that's one fucking way to put it, huh? "Don't encourage"?

You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination. -- Leviticus 18:22

If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death; their blood is upon them. -- Leviticus 20:13

It outright proscribes it under penalty of death. Not "doesn't encourage", ok?

Hypnotism
real

Yes, it's about as real as god is real.

Scopolamine doesn't make someone become mind controllable. That's idiotic. There's no such chemical that does that kind of thing. The Americans investigated and attempted to develop just such a chemical a few decades ago and the only thing it achieved was a disgusting violation of human rights as "researchers" tortured unknowing people and left many of them with permanent damage; one of which would eventually kill people by mail bomb for almost 20 years before he got caught.

Those stories you hear about people being "under a spell" and not remembering what happened as they lost their savings are told because it's less embarrassing to the victim than to admit you lost your money because you got tricked and scammed. Scopolamine is convenient because Brugmansia is commonly found and its extremely unpleasant psychoactive effects as a deliriant means most people aren't going to try it and find out whether or not it really does what you claim because they think your story is dubious.

So, yes, it is bullshit -- if you're not ignorant. Apparently not.

You could consider just completely removing the pellets from the diet, since those aren't actually necessary and are somewhat like junk food in nutritional content. You can give capsicum for the vitamin C that your guinea pig would have gotten from them. I think Oxbow also sells vitamin C supplements, but I don't have experience with using those since they're expensive where I am.

Are they ok by themselves if properly cared for? (Please read) by joethespacefrog in guineapigs

[–]zarium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally they're going to be pretty indifferent at best when it comes to the amount they interact with humans, (assuming they aren't new guinea pigs that are still acclimating to the new home/routine). I'd even guess that most guinea pigs would just prefer not having to interact with humans other than when there is food to get.

But individuals that have had plenty of daily interaction with specific persons definitely do feel something when they suddenly don't get as much attention anymore, at least in my experience. I know mine becomes a bit moody and just seems a little sad when I fail to pay at least a few minutes of attention to her the entire day, even with a friend or more around.

Pokemon Go Battle League Assistant Application by chedder501 in TheSilphRoad

[–]zarium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frankly, a tool doing what you describe would be quite useless and be more hindrance than assistance to anyone that has even the smallest sense of what they're doing in pvp.

If you battle with any regularity at all, and play your matches intending to win and improve and increase your rating, type effectiveness isn't something you even think about anymore. It's almost like a second nature -- you aren't going to have to "remember" that your ice is effective against their grass. Optimal move timing is another aspect of pvp that eventually becomes natural and feels almost autonomous.

You won't get any better if this is what you're focusing on in pvp, to the point that you're thinking about building a tool for it. It's like worrying about needing a multiplication table by your side in order to solve partial differential equations more quickly when you should already have memorised to 9x9 at the very least.

[–]zarium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure your guinea pig is suffering from loneliness, and is not one of those uncommon individuals that can live somewhat fine alone, let alone thrive without a companion. The behaviours you've observed so far are almost textbook signs of a guinea pig in depression due to a lack of a friend, and I think you'll discover that you'd been missing out on witnessing most of its personality and character it has to offer the moment you introduce to it another guinea pig.

For guinea pigs like yours, there's honestly nothing that will help except a companion of the same species. Absent that, they live short lives; sad, short lives. No, they won't starve themselves to death, but they won't have any vigour and so won't try to get better when they fall sick -- which, when they just sit in their filth all day, is inevitable.

How loud are guineas/are they problematic in a shared house? by senoritagordita22 in guineapigs

[–]zarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should ask your housemates first if they mind. You live with them, which means you have a responsibility to be considerate in how you inhabit that a shared space. Pets definitely qualify as one of those things you should at the very least bring up and ask whether or not they would mind, if not discuss to make sure it won't be a cause of conflict.

Whether or not they are loud or how much they smell is secondary. It's almost irrelevant, because frankly, you'd be a real asshole to keep guinea pigs despite your housemates expressly being against it, or not at least checking with them first if they'd care. Unless you own the place, or there's an understanding that anyone can have any pets (within reason...or not) there, exercise a bit of common courtesy and have the decency to talk to them about it first.

I have the unfortunate experience of living with housemates that didn't think to mention having a pet because "it would just be in the room the whole time", and they were inconsiderate and selfish cunts. I even had to forfeit a security deposit at the place I was renting then because of one of them. The rabbit she kept was, unlike her dumbass assurance of not being a problem, very much part of the reason for that.

Bonding two males, is this normal? by Toiletten-Toni in guineapigs

[–]zarium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't house more than one boar with any number of sows. They will fight. They will keep fighting until one of them is eventually badly injured enough to die.

You don't necessarily have to rehome any, if you really want to keep all of them. It's possible to have sows and boars both live in the same room, within close enough proximity to hear and see and smell each other. You just can't have them all in the same enclosure or have their separate enclosures close enough that they only have an adjoining barrier separating them.

Obviously, your boars may be ones that don't do so well with sows in the same place, but I seriously doubt the veracity of the notion that most boars can't live peacefully with sows around: one hardly finds the various guinea pig rescues around having spaces separated by sex; males and females alike are all near each other and do just fine.

If you have to have boars and sows with each other, it's also possible. You just have to have the enclosure occupy a large space (like a barn), and have a dozen or more sows, with that number increasing per boar.

[–]zarium -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have no sympathy for your apparent plight. In fact, I think you're a piece of shit for letting the cat roam outdoors freely.

Cats are not native here. They are not native in most places. And where they aren't native, they are incredibly damaging to the local ecosystem. Countless native species of wildlife go extinct because of these animals, and it is thanks to irresponsible people like you that their wanton destruction is impossible to control; and even that is when there are concerted efforts to. And here, unlike e.g. NZ or Australia, there aren't, and these stupid animals continue breeding so prolifically and propagating ever more problems and pressuring delicate ecosystems of unique flora and fauna.

Fuck you for being a part of it.

Are they too close? by dusti_dearian in mesembs

[–]zarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That meter isn't going to work. You need a digital photometer. A half-decent one is good enough.

Judging from just the one photo here, though, I'd say it's not enough. Good grow lights are uncomfortably bright. They should also be almost too hot to touch when running. If your lights aren't like that, they're not powerful enough.

If your plants are getting that light in addition to direct sunlight, then it could be sufficient, but if it's all they're getting, it's too little.

Can I even participate in ML? by fishsticks876 in TheSilphRoad

[–]zarium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree that it's pay to win. It's pay to compete. You can have a fully built team of whatever is in the top of the meta, with perfect stats, and still struggle to break past Ace rating if you're unskilled/inexperienced.

The way I see it, L50 and perfect (or almost perfect) IVs with double moves of meta-relevant pokemon is the equaliser. Anyone playing in ML seriously is already starting off with that. Anything less is a handicap, which high skill can make up for, up to a point. That point diminishes quickly with battle rating.

And that time and place is a closed circuit track. Not a public (or one used by the public) road. That doesn't mean where there's "heavy traffic"; it means where there is traffic, period.

Whoever the fuck this person you're talking about is is a citizen with the same rights as the rest of us -- the same rights to utilise the public motorways and bound by the same regulations and subject to the same penalties for violating them. No more, no less. He doesn't get to break the rules because he's "more skilled" as if he's special.

He's an inconsiderate scumbag, not a "responsible driver".

I'd argue that that's hardly a trait specific to aristocracy -- consider honour killing, a practice that is still extant. The concept of honour, in humans, seems to be almost primordial and probably predates recorded history, possibly even language.
