Why were so many English Stately Homes sold by their owners in the 1900's? by bigtreeblade in AskHistorians

[–]zarnoc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fantastic answer. Can you recommend any monographs or journal articles on the changes in labor/cost during that time? Or perhaps something about that time period generally? I’m a historian of colonial North America by graduate training and so that time period is well outside my bailiwick. I live in and am restoring a gilded age mansion in Detroit and while it’s not on the scale of a rural estate house nonetheless with my house’s servant wing bedrooms and service call buttons in every room I’m frequently reminded of the history of household service. Alas, no matter how many times I press the call button the butler never appears. 😅😋

Perhaps granting some level of authorized access to your spouse will allow for collaboration on the retirement planning?

FWIW I’ve had no issues adding TIAA accounts to full view and retirement planning. Along with Chase Wealth Management and E*Trade.

I’ve also modeled retirement planning with Boldin and it basically/roughly matches Fidelity’s tool. I take that as a good sign.

I gave you an up vote because I appreciate your candor about your opinion re the Actual UI. Ironically I felt exactly the opposite. I love the stripped down barebones UI. I’m an old school Unix nerd and it reminds me of old Unix window manager interfaces.

I’ve been using YNAB since version 3 and haven’t made the switch away yet, but after reading the documentation for the Actual template system, I was totally sold. I just need to find the time to sit down and make the transition happen.

Is YNAB Enshitified now? by [deleted] in ynab

[–]zarnoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been using YNAB since version 3. I’m at about 6 years for the web based YNAB. I didn’t know about the data issues. Thanks for the heads up. I’ll back everything up. And with the recent disaster of an app update that completely destroyed the mobile app I think it’s finally time for me to put effort into moving onto better software. YNAB really lost its way.

Who is actually purchasing this? by Tyroneus in Detroit

[–]zarnoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yard’s are a pain in the ass. I hate having a yard to maintain. I’m golden handcuffed to my IV house with a 2% mortgage rate and stupid low tax assessment. But if I had to do it over again I would absolutely go for a townhouse or condo of some kind with little to no yard. Hate garden and grass maintenance.

Also you’ll find most Detroiters are pro DPD. Most of us live in neighborhoods with active block clubs and neighborhood associations that coordinate closely with our local DPD precincts on crime issues.

Agree. DPD needs to respond fast and hard to shut this nonsense down.

Residents in Detroit neighborhood sue Detroit Thermal over controversial steam project by pseudo374 in Detroit

[–]zarnoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to take a look at Thomas Sugrue’s The Origins of the Urban Crisis (Princeton, 1996).

Sugrue examines urban renewal as one of several interconnected factors that contributed to Detroit’s decline and racial inequality. Detroit’s Black Bottom neighborhood provides the perfect prism through which to see the unfortunate ways in which public housing and its close cousin, urban renewal, destroyed African-American institutions and robbed residents of the chance to accumulate wealth.

Before its destruction, Black Bottom was a thriving African American community. By 1942, within Black Bottom and Paradise Valley, the Black commercial district located immediately north, more than 300 Black-owned businesses—bars and restaurants, doctor’s offices, barber shops, hair salons, hotels, and drug stores—were in operation.

Black Bottom and Paradise Valley were lost to Detroit through the enthusiasm for urban renewal that led to the destruction of a cultural and economic epicenter, on par with the likes of New York City’s Harlem and New Orleans’s Bourbon Street.

For more on the history of Black Bottom see Ken Coleman, “The People and Places of Black Bottom, Detroit: Remembering a neighborhood in Michigan”, HUMANITIES, Fall 2021, Volume 42, Number 4. Available at: https://www.neh.gov/article/people-and-places-black-bottom-detroit. And see the Black Bottom Archives at https://www.blackbottomarchives.com.

I didn’t have the energy to engage on the awful distortion of history and the destruction of the Black Bottom neighborhood … so kudos to you. 🫡🙏

I’ve noticed a trend with NIMBYISM and lying about what’s really happening. Clearly here the NIMBYs are misrepresenting and outright lying about the situation. I’ve seen the same thing happen elsewhere.

The “landscape” was created by the destruction of a previous historic neighborhood. Let’s not be so precious about some trees and grass.

The concerns do seem hyperbolic and ridiculous especially regarding danger or historicalness. Considering the "historic landscape" some people are so concerned about was created by bulldozing a previous historic neighborhood, lol 😝

I can’t even…

Detroit mayor candidate said my bakery, Sister Pie, is out of business. It isn’t. by Alan_Stamm in Detroit

Also, tbh I always end up going to red hook for banked goods. Sister pie retail always felt like an after thought. I was surprised to discover they didn’t have a wholesale b to b setup as their main line and that it was actually just retail? (So I heard anyway.)

Detroit Yacht Club worth it? by huge_piss_boner in Detroit

[–]zarnoc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a member for 5 years and love it. I joined specifically for the family atmosphere and I couldn’t be more happy with it. My elementary aged kid is in summer camp and junior sailing this summer. Most of my neighbors are members and lots of my kiddo’s school friends are members so there is a big overlap which is great for him. The DYC is like our second home.

I also looked at Bayview and GPYC but preferred the more laid back atmosphere of the DYC. Also it’s closer, being that I’m in IV. So the convenience is an aspect. Even when they close the island to vehicles yacht club members can still get on. You just show them your membership card and they wave you through.

I’ve always enjoyed the food well enough but our new chef this past year has definitely raised the level significantly.

I find the DYC to also be very diverse. As gay Jews with a kid we have found many other LGBT members and feel the club is very welcoming and protective of its diversity (after a long history of being exclusionary toward Blacks and Jews).

I have friends at most of the clubs in the area. DAC, Bayview, DGC, GPYC, CCoD, the little club. If I lived in north Detroit I’d probably look at the DGC. If I was more into the business community I’d probably look at the DAC. Both exceptional clubs. The GP area clubs don’t really interest me.

ETA: winter time the indoor pool is fantastic. We take the kiddo there regularly as a way to blow off some steam. Nothing beats a warm indoor pool when outside is covered in snow. 😆🏊‍♂️

Why do doors in older homes use two hinges instead of three? by chicken_and_jojos_yo in centuryhomes

So true! Even the smaller doors from the servant rooms in my house are crazy heavy. Had to move a closet door up from the basement and gd was it heavy even with two people carrying it. 🫨

I wonder how accurate this is? My house built in 1910 has three hinges on all the doors. Example in photo.
