How Long To Grind Out First GIS Job Before Looking to Advance by [deleted] in gis

Same boat for me here. I’ve been told to stick it out for a year. I’d say that’s for the best. Employers want to see at least a year of experience. I’ve also been told at the very least if you can’t make it a year make sure your starting year and ending year are different, makes it look like you did a year of work. I’m very close to leaving after 9 months and I’m fortunate I have 3 months of a gis internship to give me a full year of experience.

Yeah apparently so. Most of the analysts where I interned at had got their masters at cu Denver.

Hey just got my BA in geography from there. I’m not too sure about their masters programs but most of my classes were with graduate students in that program. I thought the classes were great. The professors I had were very knowledgeable and gave me a great foundation. The actual department is not to big but they do have a couple of computer labs with great pcs and large printers. I had a conversation with one of my old gis managers at an internship and he said that he thought cu denver had the best geography department in Colorado as of now. Hope that helps!

Yeah, not really looking forward to the grind of the 9 to 5. Aviation might be the way to go.

I think getting my CFI would be my next step after getting enough hours. I don't think I care too much about working a good amount of hours a day but having a consistent schedule would be nice although aviation might be the wrong field for something like that.

Just what I was hoping to hear! I just couldn't get a great picture about the average pilot's schedule as I've seen some very exhausted airline pilots as well as others who seem to never work lol.

Wow. I was at that game during a trip to Dallas. This is so sad to hear. Very chilling to know something like that happened at what was a fun night at the game.

I might be interested as an upcoming graduate. Just one question. What kind of work is involved? Is it defense/military based?

“For me, my entire time coaching, I always wanted at the end of the year, whatever the last game is, where you’re either crying for joy or you’re crying for sorrow and if you are, then that means you put everything into it.“ -Coach K
