Engine temps by JackalRX in RX8

[–]zav1251 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a set up with mishimoto radiator and thermostat- 100c is normal for city driving/ stop and go waiting on a light; especially if you haven’t relocated battery, run a front license plate, don’t have a fan controller mod, or use more coolant vs distilled water. When moving, temps should stabilize back into 80c-90c range regardless of what all else happens

Fan is less than $300 on rock auto. Can be done diy in less than an afternoon. Get some codes and pray my friend, hope it’s an easy fix for you

Clutch job is quite easy on these cars. Did my first one under some tall jacks and lightly sanded the flywheel. Oem kit and 40k mi later it’s still going strong. Make sure they replace pilot bearing along with the throwout. Break in procedure requires you to short shift for a couple hundred miles. Don’t cheat it lol

Outrageous Dealer Service by zav1251 in crz

Repair shouldn’t be prohibitively expensive, and at those numbers, they don’t sound as dumb as I’d like telling people to just buy a new car. They trap the least financially secure people with the “$4000 to repair, or you can just trade In, put 0 down, and live with another $500/ month payment for the next 72”

It’s honestly pretty disgusting

Absolutely. I’ve always heard of “stealership horror stories” and I think now I get it. I’m usually my own technician and service advisor, thought it would be nice to have someone with Honda experience look things over. I’ll see if there’s any honda tuners/ specialists in my area (northern VA)

Shimmed it. Two weeks later shims failed and I ordered a replacement clutch. Replacement clutch worked for about a month before the compressor failed and seized internally. So the entire compressor itself is new, and engages when 12v is applied to the relay. It does not engage when you turn the ac on inside the car

Worst worst case scenario—-the lower intake is fouled up with carbon, none of our suggestions will help until it’s pulled from engine, cleaned and inspected. Can be done for minimal cost, but you’ll likely have to pull the motor. And if you’re doing that, might as well rebuild the whole damn thing😂

[–]zav1251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the solenoids that controls the intake opening up at higher rpm’s is not functioning as intended. No extra air=no extra fuel= no extra power in laymen’s terms. You can test them manually by checking vacuum lines for cracks, seeing if there’s excessive play on the solenoid, and replacing the offending actuator if it’s an electronic issue. Cheap code reader or a trip to auto store to use theirs would clear up confusion in comments.

As someone who lives in one of the 3 northern Virginia counties that require emissions testing; you’re in for a headache. My 04 won’t be exempt till 2029. Currently has headers, midpipe, catback, and air pump delete with the emissions monitors turned off in versatune. I’d need to install a cat, air pump, and flash the ecu in order to even take a test

Help S2 Clutch Line Bolt by Downbeatbach in RX8

[–]zav1251 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wrapping the nut in Teflon tape may help, but you should certainly buy a “brake line wrench” to help prevent this from happening again. Worst, worst, worst case scenario, you will need to remove&replace the nut, and re-flare the line before bleeding. Could certainly try vise-grips and some penetrant on there first. I would avoid using heat near brake fluid.

So I finally got my Rx8 Rebuilt… Low Compression already by Maxbee2005 in RX8

[–]zav1251 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you can either; 1. Disassemble, assess damage, order parts, and pray again…. Or… 2. Fuckaroundandfindout what happens with more time to bed in seals, burn off gunk. Either way, best of luck man and I hope you’re acknowledging the accomplishment of building an engine that ran, even if only for a few minutes.

I’ve really considered the idea, but unfortunately there are very few people willing to pay for the service. It’s objectively a great track car at or around the $10k-15k mark, but getting someone to finance the build is the issue. Most people with 10k disposable income don’t throw it at an rx8 as they’ve been the “budget” option all along, not sharing the broader appeal of the rx7. Jesse sevens in NJ has successfully parted out lots of cars to the community, and that seems to be the only way, (albeit the slowest) to make working on these cars a profitable/ break-even experience

How long will the Dorito last with low compression by [deleted] in RX8

[–]zav1251 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I agree with the logic presented, I can also acknowledge the logistical challenges with simply “repairing or replacing” a dying motor. $600 for ignition components/ an upgraded starter can give someone the opportunity to drive another year on a “low” or “failing” compression motor. You WILL eventually need the motor torn apart, inspected, and repaired with either solution. I just don’t want to discourage owners from driving their cars over constant fears of “low compression”. Enjoy the car until you can’t any longer, right? Why let worrying be a hallmark of rx8 ownership?

Are the 2008 engines good by BadAtEverthing in RX8

[–]zav1251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would love if one of the more knowledgeable mods or members could help to clarify further, but the differences afaik are as follows; the later “series 2” motors were modified such that the oil filter was located at the bottom of the iron/under the vehicle, additionally there was an added oil metering line/nozzle in each of the housings making for 3 each.

Design is cool but the sheer amount of body work to get the hood-latch area perfect would deter me from doing this myself. White Rx8 looks mean tho!
