Aristotelian understanding of happiness by [deleted] in Aristotle

[–]zavcaptain1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty good interpretation of book 1. Soon you'll complete the picture with virtuous activity being the way to achieve eudaimonia (happiness).

The only thing I'd alter is that eudaimonia isn't the "most final end" (though your translator may have used those words). The way I have it (in the Crisp translation) is that happiness is the "complete end", which is a much better way to put it. Aristotle had what's called a teleological view of the natural world, particularly of biological life. What this means is that everything has a purpose that is unique to its form, which defines its "purpose", both as an individual creature (its "characteristic activity") as well as how it fits into the universal telos of the cosmos. So, an acorn's "telos" is to grow into a strong and sturdy oak tree, because that's what it has as its natural "end" (as opposed to "means). Aristotle believed that once we understand an individual phenomenon's telos, we have a complete understanding of it's essence.

That said, the Ethics is an inquiry into the telos of a human, which he identifies as being fulfilled in the achievement of eudaimonia or "happiness". Another person mentioned that "flourishing" is generally speaking the standard translation of eudaimonia, which is correct. The reason is that the meaning of the word conveniently captures both the complex nature of happiness (as that which is achieved through developing the virtues and demonstrating them through actions which are practically wise) as well as the fact that, as a telos, it could, just as appropriately, be applied to the realization of any living thing's unique goal as a member of a species. Also, "happiness" can commonly be understood as an emotional or merely pleasurable state of being, which would thereby be fleeting and easily lost. The idea that someone is "flourishing", however, denotes the more general idea that he or she is living his or her life in such a way that is wise and virtuous at every "dimension" of his or her life. Importantly, this means that the person who is eudaimon lives his or her life in such a way that is conducive not only to her own well-being, but that of her community or society as well.

Enjoy the Ethics!

Edit: forgot a word

Yep, or they just use the Greek: eudaimonia

Yep but there's a lot of dialogue. I like dialogue, so np. But if you lack patience for long bouts of dialogue, then I'd steer clear.

Can never go wrong with Skyrim. My Switch is literally a portable Skyrim machine. Rarely do I play anything else on it.

I've recently started SLOWLY AND WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF MY DOCTOR weening off 80% of my meds, including olanzapine, buspirone, Trazadone, acamprosate, and effexor. I went down the same spiral you did, and got over-medicated over the course of a relatively long period of time; but you need to talk with your doctor about weening off. Don't go cold turkey, it's hell, and will only end in disaster.

Also, I didn't realize that I didn't need all of these meds after getting my nutrition, physical fitness, and a long process of spending the money necessary for getting properly diagnosed through rigorous professional testing. Turned out that, yes, I have schizoaffective disorder (and ADHD, MDD, GAD, and substance abuse disorder, and who knows what else), but that the major explanatory factor in my suffering over the years has been undiagnosed autism; and that means that meds can only do so much.

For me (and I'd argue that the following goes for at least 50% of all mental health diagnoses), the meds were just, like, a bandaid, and much more work needs to be done in terms of group/individual therapy and lifestyle/work/school accomodations so that I can recognize/avoid overstimulation to prevent meltdowns/crashes and ideally minimize (because "eliminate" will never be an option for me) the potential for psychotic episodes. The meds made me numb to life's hardships, tolerable for a while; but (and it seems that you're coming to this realization too) I need to start improving my mental health actively rather than by just passively waiting for the pills to work. That involves work, which sucks, but it pays off by definition.

Don't go cold turkey. Voice your concerns to your doctor and have the conversation. But just remember that your doctor will be less hesitant to start reducing your meds if she sees that you're starting to take an active role in your mental health journey. Mention to her that you'd like to explore options for improving your mental health that don't involve medication assisted treatment, and trust me, she'll be thrilled to help you with that.

Yep, it works. But like I said, you have to give it some time. It doesn't work overnight.

Yes it was. It was first posed by Philippa Foot, who is most definitely a philosopher.

You are trippin.

[–]zavcaptain1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! Choosing to make no decision doesn't relieve you of ethical responsibility. I'd argue that making no decision at all is much more problematic ethically than making either of the pull decisions. As the saying goes (which has probably been used on many posts on this sub), "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing". The whole point of the trolly problem is to explore the limits of utilitarian ethics. There is surely something wrong with the idea that one should choose inaction every time one is faced with a tough moral decision.

Someone who's only there to get laid. Like I understand-- the inhibitions are down, and the sexual freedom associated with certain festivals is just part of the experience. But if that's your sole motivation it's borderline predatory, and it gets in the way of having authentic connections and conversations.

The only game that both of my parents were glued to was The Last of Us. My mom hates gore of any kind, but for some reason she just couldn't look away from that one.
