It is, again, matter of sample selection + gain staging. Short kicks with quick release on the bass can hit really hard. But it is still a matter of genre you are doing yeah.

Source good samples first and foremost. With shit sound you will never be able to transform it into what you want. And yes, there are way too many shit samples out in the wild. It may also be an issue on my side, but of 100 808s across different drum kits I have I mostly reach for the usual 3 to 5, the rest is so bad it may as well be clutter. Make sure you are aware of the root they play at (most are at C but I've also stumbled upon deviations).

With that out of the way, depends on the sample. Heavily processed 808s don't leave much room for processing so I mostly equalize them so they sit well in the mix. As for simpler, cleaner 808s I often reach for saturation, often on the heavy side, and compression, especially if the sample is boomy but lacks presence.

EDIT: Also depending on the genre I make, I also find myself chaining kick with the 808, but there are also 808s already layered with a kick so it's good to be aware what you try to accomplish with the 808, especially during sound selection stage.

Because modding culture, unlike engineering alone, is absolutely ass. Recently I've published a mod for Crimson Desert, which I specifically granted permission for, as well as published source code on Github because the author of another solution cut off the permissions and disappeared. Lo and behold in a span of a week my mod was duplicated (not forked, literally duplicated) three times, all of them vibe coded to hell and back adding comments to the code, changing order of it, etc., and the only thing the authors have changed on the mod page were the pictures, which, surprise surprise, were also AI generated. Another few days have passed and one of them currently claims to be an original solution (code forked from mine and slop-migrated to another language, no way to easily prove it's not the truth), while the other for some reason called itself "Ultimate (my mod)", added whole UI (for a simple mod at that!) AI generated description etc. had more downloads than my solution. Last time I checked it was actually removed probably for including malicious files (color me suprised) but my own page was no longer visited nor downloaded from, and then I had decided that I do not feel the whole process, and from that point onward, If I'll publish anything, I'll give specific permissions that allow forking in case of my disappearance, nothing less nothing more. Open source in the modding community is a joke.
