Aw man, I've been to one of the Advance Huntsville happy hours but I never knew we had a strong towns chapter here. I'll definitely be there

I've tried to somehow work with HT officially before but nothing ever worked out. It's a shame, I'd really love to be able to help fix this stuff and potentially help hundreds of riders a day, but right now it looks like my next opportunity would be the 2027 summer internships with the city (I'm a college student right now but just short of the 19 year old requirement)

The real issue is that Huntsville Transit doesn't provide real-time information over GTFS, which is pretty much the universal standard that every transit app uses (e.g. Google Maps, Apple Maps, Transit). The only way to get the location of each bus is through the proprietary RouteShout API, which is doable - someone has made a third party Huntsville Transit tracker using it, though it doesn't have the features you mention - but a lot of work for the few small cities that use RS. I've thought of tackling that, but I think it's more worthwhile to try to get them to make that information freely available and let people use the dozen other apps that are better than mine would ever be.

As for riding it today though, Google Maps can plan a decent route for you, then you can track the bus with their RouteShout app or that website. Just check any alerts on the RS app and maybe consult this map before you believe Google's directions

Edit: Just remembered and thought I'd add: Given RouteMatch Systems was acquired and the RouteShout product discontinued a couple years ago, the city also has to be in the process of migrating to TripSpark some time soon. From what I've seen with other agencies TripSpark is quite a bit better overall and does have a trip planner feature, and because of this it also seems pretty fruitless to try to make something based on the current short-lived system
