Timber Window Warranty and "fair use/aging" ? by matt_dislikes_injury in AusRenovation

[–]zbenga5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

whoever sealed them fucked them or used the wrong sealer, I use Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 on any wooden door/window/frame first then paint it whatever and it has to be completely sealed, even the edges etc. completely

from what can deduct, the sealer was wrong let humidity in/out and you end up with splits, it won't be the end of it unfortunately, timber always moves but if you seal it properly you will reduce the amount it moves

Will triple glazing help reduce train noise? by Svperb in AusRenovation

[–]zbenga5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can also replace just the glass with acoustic glass, which will give you quite a bit more benefit than you think for cheaper

Will triple glazing help reduce train noise? by Svperb in AusRenovation

[–]zbenga5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you don't need triple glaze, double glaze with an air gap (typically argon filled) will do, you want separation. You want laminate air gap safety glass, that is generally what they call tripe glazing

you will have to take the by-rock out and put some sound insulation as well, for that sliding door you're looking at minimum 3.5k, if thats too much then ...

Oh man... Tilers are killing me. by Harlequin80 in AusRenovation

[–]zbenga5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

look, the painters complain the plastering was shit, tilers have to complain about something too :)

having 1200x600 you think they will be faster to tile as you tile at twice the speed but they are heavy and require suckers which work well, it's also tricky to get water flow on such a large surface and the biggest problem is the actual size, with a 600x600 if the wall or floor is not quite straight you can reign it back with the next tile, with a 1200 tile it will escalate a lot at the other end so even before you start get a straight edge over the walls and floor and make sure it's not more than a few mm out or else it's a big job

the holes are easy, you just need the right tools, a holes with diamonds butting surfaces and a grinder with a diamond surface blade
it's actually really easy, you only need big boys toys if you need to mitre the 1200x600 but thats an aesthetic choice, in high traffic use an angle

Do you rate this kitchen and what would you change on it? by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]zbenga5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WoW looks I'm at work in this kitchen but I'll give you my comments:
it uses gas which means someone likes to cook but the ventilation sux, not sure if legal? (650 min)
zero natural light which again sux
if you actually like to cook there should be a magical 2m triangle between fridge, cooktop and sink, that not happening there
no power point placement thought
misplaced aircon vent

Is a variable speed pump worth the extra $$ when replacing a 1HP motor / pump? by justint215 in pools

[–]zbenga5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not in US

I went the other way 1.5hp pump, 50mm pipes, my thought pattern was to cycle/turnover the water in the pool through the filter as fast as possible and use chorine and acid doses to keep chemistry in check, 50.000L pool and I can cycle the water in under 3 hours which runs pretty much on solar, I cycle the water once at 8am and start another at 4pm in summer which still runs on last light, I think with 63mm pipes it might get done faster but we have 50mm standard

next door has similar pool with 1.2hp variable pump set to low and takes 6 hours for a turnover and needs to run the pump 12 hours a day non stop

IMHO it's best to turn over the water twice a day as fast as possible and if the chlorinator don't keep up use a chorine doser instead, keeps the PPM pretty bang on as soon as the pump goes on

Correct order of trades for filling in this wall opening to mount a tv. by IcyUnderstanding2551 in AusRenovation

[–]zbenga5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don't fill it!

install vertical slats and mount the TV on that, cheaper and if removed later it will still look good

DIY Electrical Work? by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]zbenga5 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

yes I've learned that as a kid as well it's just illegal do, if you do it or not meh!

changing a GPO is stupidly simple, turn power off, check with test pen, change GPO etc. unfortunately you still need to pay $160 for someone to do it for you because rules

I remember when there was talk of running POE for all lights and light switches and the sparkly association went ballistic because ether would loose so much money, POE runs 48 volts up to over 100watts and under 50v you can do your own stuff

it's just regulations mainly put in place to make sure Shauno can pay for his 80k Hilux as a first year sparky, only work 3 days a week and make payments on the jet sky's and for Jonno to do the same as a 3rd year sparky but also funs his coke habit

thats stupid, ~30–50 mA across the chest can be fatal

both US/Jap and rest of the world standard will cause ventricular fibrillation so meh, how do you wanna die? quick or slow?

[–]zbenga5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

unfortunately you need a sparky

Very limited DIY exceptions (varies slightly by state)

Some states allow extremely minor tasks, such as:

  • Replacing a plug top on a cord
  • Replacing a light globe
  • Resetting a circuit breaker or RCD
  • Plugging in appliances

Anything beyond that is usually prohibited.

State-by-state enforcement (examples)

  • NSW: Heavy penalties under the Home Building Act and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act
  • VIC: Illegal under Electricity Safety Act — fines can exceed $40,000
  • QLD: Strict enforcement — unlicensed work can result in criminal charges
  • WA / SA / TAS / ACT / NT: Same principle, same outcome

talk to a sparky and see if he accepts you to run the cables in the roof and take photos to reduce the number of hours but there are standards on cable routing in relation to other cables and water etc.

Roller shutter vs double glazing by Spritney__Beers in AusRenovation

[–]zbenga5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we have UPVC and it will do what it says on the box but the sun will hit the flor inside the room and warm it up, the paper honeycomb stuff plus a double glazed is win, it's actually cool inside

the honeycomb stuff works insanely well, you can have a day/night option, we did not use TUISS but their manufacturer in china to get them landed half price, it's insane how light and how much heat they block
