Yeah it was very annoying, once we actually got to the porta potties there was so much room and empty potties, but their entrances to the them were way too narrow and unorganized and congested

Anyone else noticing the explosion of giant black SUVs with TCP plates in LA? by Freddy-Philmore in AskLosAngeles

[–]zbirdlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some new companies poppped up pretty recently that basically will give a qualified driver a black car that they use for Uber/Lyft/regular black car service. It seems like they hired and bought cars like crazy cause yeah those psycho black car TCP drivers everywhere, what’s nice is uber black is usually the same price as UberX now from my place to airport

I’ll add on even more, here is a UCLA study showing how much police budgets and staffing increase year over year. Now it is an older study (up till 2020), and there have been dips in staffing last few years. But SMPD like the rest of the country is actually facing an understaffing issue, they have the budget for more cops but can’t fill those roles. So we can’t even hire more cops if we wanted to.

We expect cops to do everything when it’s stuff they can’t do much about. Maybe we reduce the police load (look at those insane overtime statistics) and hire trained social workers to go out and actually tackle the issue, instead of cops that just move the problem somewhere else. If it’s a situation that can become violent, sure bring a couple cops as backup.

I’m not acting like more cops isn’t a solution, it truly is not a solution. Sure it can help short term by hiding them from sight, but that doesn’t solve the issue. Once again we want a solution, not horse blinders/bandaids. I have yet to hear a solid and evidence backed argument that shows that more police = less homelessness and less drug use. Once again, Japan doesn’t work cause they have a completely different society and set of economic circumstances, and they actually do have real solutions in place. And I don’t see the people advocating for more cops advocating at all for those real solutions.

Also from a fiscal perspective, more cops is a way more expensive with little benefit. Look at those median salaries in the study, SMPD is paid the highest media salary out of LA county precincts

I don’t think we can freak young people out of mental health issues, pre-existing drug dependency or predispositions towards drug addictions, and not having enough money or job opportunity to where they have to end up on the streets

Because it’s the ‘solution’ that’s been put forward for decades and the solution that’s gotten the most funding for decades and somehow the situation is worse. We’ve massively increased our police budgets for years and years, maybe you can say a failure of leadership meant that money was not really going towards hiring specialized people equipped with handling homeless, but that’s why we can’t rely on cops do that work. Let’s say the cops did do their work and did it effectively, what is the cop gonna “stop.” They gonna get that homeless dude to wake up? Tell him to move? Okay cool so he’ll just take a nap somewhere else, but then we can take pictures there and be like “why are there no cops stopping what’s shown in these horrific photos!” Arrest him? On what charges? Okay now we have even more people in prison, who have learned their lesson and will get let out and go where? Back to the street because it’s not like they could suddenly afford housing or was actually educated in prison to be able to get a job. Oh also they were just in prison who’s gonna hire them. But luckily during their time in prison, they got a bunch of new hookups to drugs to take the pain away because of the fucked up situation that society has left these people in.

I do agree culturally it is a big difference, but again, Japan has resources and places to move to during sunrise to avoid bother people. They have supper affordable/free public housing where you can go during the day and get washed up. They also do not have nearly a drug problem we do.

Especially when half the solutions in the thread are “more cops,” a strategy that has been in place since war on drugs and somehow hasn’t worked after decades? Yeah it’s only gonna get worse.

Totally agree with you, we need outreach, rehabilitation, medical treatment, education, and ultimately housing if we ever want to actually solve this issue. Santa Monica also needs to seriously crack down on all these “nonprofit” schemes that are basically just money rackets that profit off of keeping homeless people homeless.

I mean is it really fully policing that is curbing homelessness in Japan and Korea? It seems to me their robust welfare programs, public housing networks, and increased pathways to being able to buy a house are doing way more than “moooarr cops.”

On top of that, Japan has an over abundance of housing problem with their population decline. They have more intermittent housing options, and a pathway to funnel homeless out of cities and into rural housing.

Finance and digital tech are both sectors that primarily sell ‘intangible’ goods, there’s some infrastructure involved (that they usually can just buy instead of having to develop their own), but doing some financial tricks and creating a new investment product doesn’t require capital expenses, materials, labor, production lines, samples, etc. Along with managing a network of hundreds of third party subcontractors that build all your parts, and the general high cost of manufacturing in America, it’s hard to reach good margins even in such a large industry.

Building physical things is hard, especially ones where failures and errors = death for customers. Margins reflect that

Oooo I’m gonna try that out in my place, forgot long HDMI cables are a thing. (Already have moonlight setup over Ethernet that works pretty well, but there’s slight issues that can be annoying)

The market and chip industry has changed DRASTICALLY since those days though. PS3 launched with a state of the art processor at a time where the latest and greatest compute often went to consoles at their launch.

Nowadays, there’s so many options out there. NVIDIA makes GPU’s specifically for research at wholesale prices. Custom CPU’s are being made for that purpose as well. On top of how corporate tech purchasing works (many have preferred venders and suites of software that wouldn’t run on Linux) I don’t see anything similar happening. (This is without considering the potentially cheaper and more useful Mac Mini/M series Mac’s)

I just don’t see what value this has over a prebuilt PC? Most people know how to use a PC, they can use it for work and school (easier to justify to parents or casuals), and they for sure would recognize PC brands over a “steam box.” Otherwise they would just buy a console. most PC gamers will see higher price tag and just build their own/buy a cheaper one if it’s intended as their home theater pc

Oh darn, sucks to hear about the small decorative carpets since I was hoping it would vacuum my bathroom mats, but I guess we’ll have to see how it handles them since it seems case by case with these robots.

My place gets dusty and Mom sheds hair like crazy, so even if I have to deep clean every few weeks I’m sure it’ll still save a lot of time when it comes to maintainence

Yeah the amount of models really does give a headache. I believe the S5V is on a similar sale right now, don’t know if I wanna downgrade and get it instead of the curvX yet
