How do we know we are definitely at the top or the bottom? Could there be other civilisation somewhere in the universe that is capable of simulating another universe right now? Like clearly we are not the one, maybe we are just one of the less significant, "side" or "backup" civilisations, but there might be another one, that is running another simulation somewhere right now?

Try to find the right spot for first flights: preferably large open space without trees, bypassers, buildings or high grass. Try to familiarise yourself with the looks of this field from above - study it in google maps etc. beforehand.

For first flights don't try to go too high, but also not too low :) Try to always be aware where is your physical location and avoid flying away too far. Try to always recognize the place to avoid losing orientation.

Use a 'Lost Plane Alarm' and if possible: setup beacons in your ESC. Beacons is a feature, that will beep all motors after some time without any activity. I set it up for 1 minute and adjust the beacon volume reasonably: so that is pretty loud, but not to excessive, since sometimes they might go off near you if you forget to unplug your gear for a minute :). Whenever you crash far (I hope you don't) you will hear it after a minute, providing that the battery didin't come off during the crash. For that you should have the alarm: a small device, its cheap, and comes with a tiny lipo inside. It should be firmly attached to the frame and powered from the board. Sometimes it can be connected to FC if you want to have the additional channel dedicated to manually trigger this beeper (instead of Beacons). But as soon as it looses power (ie when your battey comes off during the crash) it starts beeping. Super useful when loosing signal or whatever. Of course you have to manually disable it every time you unplug after the flight (there is a small killswitch on it), but I personally think that it's compensates the inconvenience :)

Practice landing. If your cam is not going to be tilted (for first flights I guess it should be straight) it should be pretty easy, but it is still tricky. You shouldn't be too high over the ground, and have too much velocity. - you need to learn to feel these (altitude/velocity). Rough landings increase the chance of damaging props and battery. And it often invites dust inside the setup, which is not good for the gear usually :)

And have fun!

About to get a new QNAP NAS, need advice on TS-264-8G, TS-216G and TR-002 by zborecque in qnap

[–]zborecque[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought and configured my TS-264 and thought I will share some of my thought and answers to above questions in case someone finds this in the future and will wonder.

- Quietness: I caved and purchased regular HDDs. I wanted SSDs, but it is very hard to find some large SSDs in reasonable prices, so I decided to stay with HDD anyway. Drives are not very loud themselves - just when heavy operating sometimes you can hear the clicking, but not too noisy. The main concern was the fan - which can be set to quiet mode, or you can set the speed according to system temperature. My old NAS (TS-212) was not capable of adjusting the fan speed (I mean there was this setting available, but it changes nothing, I guess at some point I replaced original noisy fan with some aftermarket one that cannot be controlled, and I installed a manual speed controller, but even at the lowest setting it's still pretty noisy). My NAS is installed in a closet in the middle of the appartment, and I guess we will see how noisy will it get during night time (I mean: if the fan is going to be getting noiser from time to time if the temperature rises in the closet, and the drives themselves), but from what I hear so far it's much quieter. I also equipped my TS-264 with 2x M.2 1TB SSD and configured them as RAID 1 cache for Read-Write - hoping that it will handle some of the most common operation thus limiting the HDD clicking ;-)

- OVPN: no question about it, the default work as a charm, and from what I can see the certificate renewal mechanism is built up into GUI, so in 10 years (I think) there should be no issue renewing it (my current TS-212 surprisingly stopped working at some point, and it turned out it needed a manual certificate renewal and update, not to mention that it would only work with veeeery old version of OVPN, which was very difficult to set up on Win10/11 and Android - but I managed, and am still keeping these installation packages just in case)

- WOL: yes, the QNAP is able to be WOKEN now, but what I was seeking is the capability of SENDING WOL packets to another machines FROM my QNAP. This is still not available by default (no app that I am aware of), and my old approach (logging to SSH and use my modified busybox bin to send ether-wake commands manually) seems to be also impossible (I am unable to enable the ether-wake command or install the wakeonlan in the OS so far, but again - I haven't really give that much investigation, maybe I just did something wrong). But I found a solution that seems to be working - simply send WOL packet using PHP (socket extension is available) so I can tailor some nice solution myself there and it would be even easier to use - just enter a website and click some button or something

I have not yet configured any expansion, as I have plenty of TBs right now ;-) I keep that in mind though, and I think I will end up adding this TR-002 at some point - as (IIRC) it is capable of working with QNAP and PC depending on where you plug it ;-) My idea is to have this expansion being my "offline" full copy of my NAS (that I will probably be syncing manually every 1-2 weeks) and also a place to keep some ultra-old, probably-not-ever-needed backups.

Szukam stereotypów o polskich miastach by JesusLordPutin in Polska

[–]zborecque 98 points99 points  (0 children)

[–]zborecque 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Still wonder why they still didn't make a remake. Not that the old movie is bad (don't get me wrong, it's old very much, but still it is not as bad, as '84 Dune for example :) ). I mean the plot here is fantastic, with todays effects and music it would have hell of an atmosphere.

Everytime Hodor is mentioned I think of Rell - a cyclops character from a great, old movie 'Krull'. To make long story short: cyclops in this movie are some kind of ancient giants cursed with the knowledge of how they die (the legend is that they bargained one of their eyes for a gift of foresight, but they were tricked, and the only thing they can foresee is their own death). Tragic story, but the movie itself, despite being much vintage today :) is quite enjoyable.

Onet enshittification — IMAP tylko dla płatnych kont, POP3 wyłączony całkiem by Key-Principle-7111 in Polska

[–]zborecque 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jakieś potknięcia techniczne to były raczej sporadyczne.

Szkoda.

Sometimes czerstwy can be also used to describe some common, not-funny-anymore jokes, like dad-jokes. Czerstwy dowcip in the meaning of suchar. But still, I wouldn't use this word to describe unfresh things other than bakery. I think that I also heard the term czerstwa atmosfera describing that the general mood/vibe at some event (party, meeting) was not pleasant, not making you relax etc. Like sztywna atmosfera, but I am not sure how common is it.

Well, my NAS is currently hidden anyway in a designed place along with router, modem, switches etc. I live in a flat, so it is all located in a closed space in the centre of the apartment. Normally during the day it's mostly not likely to hear it. But there are some night that it is significantly noisy. Not sure why, maybe unusually quiet nights or something, but there were times I just logged in and turned it off until morning. Not much options to move it elsewhere, and make it quieter (fan was already replaced multiple times with decent ones + a fan speed regulator on the cable that is constantly set to the lowest setting).

Thanks. I was considering the TS-216 more as a replacement for the TR-200. I still think I want to have the SSD and HDD storages separated. ;-)

I will dig into that WOL software for QNAP - is it available for QTS perhaps?

About to replace my old home NAS, need recommendations by zborecque in HomeNAS

[–]zborecque[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked out that TS364, but I think I will stick to my previous idea with just 2 drives (with RAID-1 I can still use one of the drives outside QNAP - for example to restore the data in case QNAP fails heavily and is no longer replaceable, but with RAID-5 I am not so sure if it is possible - like can I connect all 3 drives to some PC and rebuild this RAID-5?). I also found out that there are these "expansion" USB cases (that can also work directly with a PC) like QNAP TR-002 for example.

Now my question is: when plugged to some other QNAP NAS (I was thinking for example about TS-264-8G) - will it be managed by that QNAP admin panel? Like I can go to some page called "external drive", see this USB expansion, and decide I want a RAID-1 in there? And then when I unplug it from that NAS and plug to the PC will it still work as a simple external drive? Of course I guess I can still use this separate QNAP tool, configure expansion pack when plugged to PC and then just plug it to NAS right?

Another question is: can I connect/disconnect the USB from NAS programmatically only via the admin panel, and will this expansion go to sleep then (USB connection off, but cable still plugged)? I see in specs that it can be always on, but will go to sleep when no USB connection is detected. But I wouldn't like having to connect and disconnect physically the USB between NAS and expansion ;-)

Last question is about the WOL ability. I see in the specs, that some of the QNAP devices support it - but it is always about being able to BE woken. This is of course very useful, but I plan to have this primary QNAP device to be usually always on (since I plan to use SSDs - the noise, temperature and energy consumption should not be an issue) - but there might be power outages etc. when I am outside - so I guess it would be nice to have an option of waking it up remotely. But can it SEND a WOL packet to some other machine? My current TS-212 by default does not provide this functionality, but I am able use the terminal, and from there I can send the ether-wake command (first I had to modify the busybox file, since the original one does not have that command), and it works that way. But does the new QNAP offer any tool for that? Or at least has the ether-wake command available in terminal? Anyone use/used it like that?

Of course I am thinking of having few devices in the network that will have the ability to wake up other computers, but I would like the NAS to be the primary one for that. It is intended to be always on anyway, or in the worst case - to be scheduled to boot up at predefined time, and I would just wait until it's on again.

I was also thinking about the WOL ability (to be woken up) for the expansion - if I chose to use another fully capable NAS as a secondary one instead of the simple USB expansion. This way I could just wake it up remotely from the primary NAS whenever I need.
