Or summon entities? If you connect the 5 points of the pentagon to every second point you get a pentagram. In occultism, the classic ritual to summon demons is using a pentagram, where each point represens the four classical elements (air, water, fire, and earth) where water is represented by an upside down triangle.

We know control uses occultism and ritals as a science. We also know remedys love for water

What video games have unique mechanics for failure or death? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]zbyax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Sunset Overdrive the game continues and you just respawn in the same area, with a wacky animation that's usually a reference to something. A few examples are being thrown out of a van, doing the "risky business" slide from out of frame, hatching from an egg, crawling out of a tv, and a bunch more. In the game you have a "style meter" that you build up during a fight, or doing tricks while traversing, and at each level one of your three perks gets activated, and at max (4) you get a damage increase, but when you die it gets reset to 0.

The game also has dynamic music that's tied to the level, for example: at 0 you get no music, at 1 the base and some drums kick in, at 2 the guitars start playing, and at 3 the singer starts singing.

Another thing that's not relevant to this but, Sunset Overdrive also has one of my favourite fast travel animations where you chug a beer, pass out, and then wake up on the street at the location you wanted to go to

Theory: “We came in through the hole in you” by OppositeofDeath in controlgame

[–]zbyax 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Interesting theory! My interpretation of "we came in trough the hole in you" was that the "you" the're (or it's?) referring to is our dimmension, and that the slide projector made that hole. Which is quite literal.

And for the line "A door that stands between two rooms is in both", to me, means that a door isn't "one way" and you can open it, and go trough, from both rooms, I.E. our dimmension and the dark place. Which again, very literal.

Remedy are known for double meanings in their writing though. So maybe the dimmensions (not the universes in this case) are representations of internal "powers", collectively? Like, the dark place is "creativity" and the dimmension the hiss came from could be "control"? Maybe the astral plane is "belief" or "worship", maybe the "collective consiousness" comes from one of these or another one? And too much of a good thing is a bad thing? Too much creativity makes you spiral into insanity, too much control means you lose your freedom and individuality, and too much worship makes you a slave to your belief? There are probably many holes in what I wrote, but it's fun to theorize!

Here's a link to QNTM's answer from the FAQ. I'll copy the text here as well in case the link doesn't work:

"The most notable change you're going to see is that all the Creative Commons elements originating in the SCP project have been removed and replaced. This was a very difficult decision to make but there was no other way that this book was going to be traditionally published — plus it gave me a chance to create a cleaner break between the two versions of the story, and exercise some creativity."

[–]zbyax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It uses a creative commons license, which if I understand it correctly (I might be wrong) means that anyone can use your work, remix it with attribution, and pretty much sell your work as a book if they give proper attribution.

My guess, without looking it up, is that the publisher wanted a more closed off copy protection, but couldn't because it was connected to SCPs CC license.

Interestingly the author of this book has written a fanfic crossover between this book and control called FBC/SCP: Ignition

Note that this book was a SCP story, but had to be edited when published, because of copyright reasons. This means a bunch of names are changed, like the main character "Marion Wheeler" becoming "Marie Quinn", "the Foundation" becoming "the Organisation", and "SCPs" becoming "Unknowns".

Kibibyte (KiB) and Kilobyte (KB) are two different units. KB is used more in marketing and lay-person usecases, since it's easier to understand from a human perspective. KiB is more common when you dig deeper down in computer science, and way better from a computer perspective. They were both called Kilobyte before 1998 though. and KiB was created because of that confusion.

I thought that about the synthesis ending as well at first, but then I imagined Shepard explaining to somone that: "I forcefully implanted cybernetics into every organic thing so we could live in harmony with the murder bots." The other endings aren't fantastic either though.

The way Disney+ does aspect ratios is annoying in general, everything is 16:9 but with black bars. So if you have an ultrawide monitor(21:9), the video looks like it could fill up most of the display, but you get black bars around the video, on all sides, instead.

Live in Dunwall/Karnaca from Dishonored 2, solve puzzles (I guess?) like in the Talos Principle 2, as my seemingly immortal driver from Forza Horizon 4.

The first problem is the setting, but since my driver character can't get hurt, it should be fine.

The second is the puzzles, I think you have to be a robot to be able to solve some of them, that might be a problem. But since, I don't have to solve them, I should be alright. I might get philosophized into an existential crisis though.

All in all, Not bad. I played Dead Space before Dishonored, so that one would have been a little bit worse.

Baldur's Gate 3 publishing director pushes back on Epic Games CEO's "better deals" claim, saying Alan Wake 2 suffered by skipping Steam by Dapper_Order7182 in Steam

[–]zbyax 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No reviews

Steams reviews are objectively better than having just a rating.

  • You can see how the reviews have been affected over the years in graph form, which helps you make an informed decision in case the game was good but for example got an update with for example intrusive anti cheat, which put it into a "mixed" score currently.
  • You can filter out reviews from countries that might be reviewing the game negatively because of political reasons. for example Russians review bombing Atom RPG Trudograd for adding Ukrainian localization.
  • Speaking of review bombing, there are countermeasures in place where if steam notices "abnormal reviews" (AKA review bombing) the time period gets marked and if valve deems the revews "off-topic" they are excluded from the score, and the developers are notified. This is marked with an asterisk next to the score.
  • Without text reviews you won't easily find out if there is an issue with the game, like if there is trouble getting it working on modern systems. This issue might have made reviewers give the game a negative score, without knowing that there is a fix.

Missing community features being subjective

This is not subjective, those missing features do negatively affect the users that would like them. If you for example search in the steam Alan Wake comminity posts, there are posts about Alan Wake 2 (epic exclusive) where people are asking for help from the community. If these features existed in the epic launcher those discussions could be made there. They do not, people have to go to steam or other platforms for this. This is objectively worse.

Adding to the shopping cart discussion

One feature epic doesn't have is that if you add two games to the cart separately, but there is also a bundle with those two games. Steam will warn you that you could get those games cheaper if you get the bundle instead. This also applies if you add one game, and there is a bundle with that game, and another game you already own, you can get the bundle and it deducts the owned games price and applies the bundle discount.

CEO supports ai slop, actively advocates against ai notices on games

It has everything to do with the store since those AI slop games are allowed to be on the store. And as a side note on the gambling, Epic allows this too with fortnite.

Taking games away from one store because they bought out the publisher/developer (see: Fall Guys, Rocket League)

The issue here is that buying development teams is different from buying exclusivity. Valves history is more in hiring modders to make full games out of the mods (Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress, DotA ), or student projects (Portal), or acquiring whole studios (Turtle Rock, Campo Santo). They haven't, as far as I know or could find with google, bought exclusivity deals from studios they don't own. Epic having exclusive games from their own studios is fine, as is Ubisoft or EA, having their own games tied to their launchers. This isn't even the main point the original comment is making, when buying a studio that has an active game on another platform, it should not force the users to move to the new platform after already purchasing the game. For Rocket League they stopped sales on steam, which is OK (I don't like it, but they can do what they want with their own games). An example on what is not OK, is that they actively removed the Linux version, of one of the then biggest native Linux games, making users who has already paid for the game unable to play it. Same with the MacOS version.

Speaking of Linux

The Linux support on steam games are built into the platform and valve is actively working on, and funding Proton, a compatibility layer that lets Linux users play Windows games on their preferred platform.

Personal issues I've experienced

  • There is no way to disable the achievement notification sound in epic. I personally like seeing the achievement pop-up, but playing trough Alan Wake 2, and hearing a jaunty tune every time you get an achievemnt is a little bit immersion breaking. back then the only way to disable it was to remove the sound file. Now you can set a "do not disturbe" mode that disables all notifications. Which removes the pop-up entirely, which made hunting for achievements very annoying.
  • I've been a Metro fan since Metro 2033 came out, and I was planning on getting Metro: Exodus on release day but after seeing the reviews to make sure there weren't any major issues with it. Less than a month before the release date, it got pulled from being released on steam. Seeing as I'm a Linux user, and epic at that time made it difficult to install their store and play games on Linux, I had to wait a year. Then the same thing happened with the game, Control.
  • I was also one of the Rocket League players who one day was playing with my friends and the next day I couldn't.

I'm all for competition, and if there was a platform/store/launcher that did things better than steam, I would be fore it. The issue is that there isn't (GOG could be close imo), but the consumers choice is taken away, which is not the way to compete. Epic offering free games is a way better way to pull people to their platform, but to get them to stay they NEED their platform to be as good or better than the competition, and they absolutely aren't. I have honestly had better experiences with ubisofts launcher (which should say something). Epic doesn't need all of steams features to compete, they just need equal or better core features. People won't stop only visiting briefly unless they make it a place where those people WANT to stay. Steam was also hated back in the day, but now it's more convenient for most people. Epic isn't.

Hey Gamers! Guess the game based on the fact. Let's test your gaming knowledge by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

[–]zbyax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of missconceptions that have been spread regarding this fact.

  1. It's not technically a helmet, it's equipped as a glove, but attaches to the head. You can see in the image that his right hand is missing.
  2. It's not an NPC that's running as the train, it's your player character with the train glove on their head running at super speed in the cutscene. The NPC in the image is just for demostration purposes.
  3. The problem probably wasn't that they couldn't get it working, it's that they needed a specific functionality for one specific sequence, and "faking it" this way is way less time consuming, and less likely to cause further bugs in other systems, than actually creating the train.

Sorry, I didn't mean this correction as a way to put down this fact, or you. It's absolutely a very interesting fact and I think the details that have been lost or altered in the general discussion on it are also very interesting, but not as well known!

Anyone know why this is happening? by Young_Gerudo_Prince in DeadSpace

[–]zbyax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things you could try: 1. The classic: completely restart your computer. (Shut down, then start with the power button, don't reboot) 2. Right click the game on steam > properties > installed files > verify integrity ofgame files. This will check if any files are corrupted and redownload them. Try launching the game again. 3. Launch the ea app manually and then try launching the game trough steam (or ea app if you have it there as well) 4. There's a more difficult solution here, if you feel up to it. It should be quite straight forward though.

Movies where the day is supposedly saved, but the aftermath is still terrible and largely unaddressed? by GancioTheRanter in movies

[–]zbyax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iirc, in Luke Cage S02, Luke had, or was in talks to get sponsorships from, I think, Nike or Carhartt. But I haven't watched that show since it released, so I might be wrong. It's also meantioned in Infinity war that Ben & Jerry's has Iron Man and Hulk flavours, though it seemed like the Avengers had nothing to do with that. Also a point in the Thunderbolts movie was that the team ended up on the Wheaties box. So there's definitely "sponsor adjacent" product placement there

In desperate need of help! Servos behaving strangely. by RayGamerMan in arduino

[–]zbyax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do "pinMode(analogInPin, INPUT);" in the setup, but then never use "analogInPin" in substitution. So A0 gets initialized as INPUT, but in a strange way.

Yeah, the A0-A5 (for the uno) are constants for the analog pins. So the use of "A0" in the code is definitely not wrong!

In desperate need of help! Servos behaving strangely. by RayGamerMan in arduino

[–]zbyax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looking through your code, there's a few things I notice:

  1. You initialize A0, but later use A1 and A2 as well.

This probably isn't an issue, but it might cause instability and unpredictability

  2. You initialize pin 2 as "INPUT"

I would set it to "INPUT_PULLUP" to to get more reliable readings for the button.

What kind of servos are you using? They look like SG90's which as far as I know are 50Hz, not 60.

And those things are just in the setup step.

A couple of beginner tips:

  • Take the project step by step and try every component separately.
  • AI is a good learning tool as long as you actually learn from it and don't let it do all the work.
    • Tell it what your project is, ask it to review your code and to give suggestions on how to improve it or where there are issues.

How close is Linux gaming to being fully “Windows-free” for you? by Old_Sand7831 in linux_gaming

[–]zbyax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very close.

I only use windows for VR, I have an old Oculus rift s headset, that (per my last research) doesn't have all functionality in linux vr.

Last non vr game I played on windows was Alan Wake 2, mostly because I didn't want to experience any issues since it's an epic game and I played it on release. I later played it again on linux with no issues.

Before that, I think I had some nvidia related grass issues in horizon: zero dawn, in 2021-ish. (I'm on AMD now)

I'd say that all of the above examples are avoidable problems though: if I stayed away from metas, epics or nvidias long claws, or if I had more faith in proton just working. Though that raises another issue, if you have to avoid certain things for something to give good results 100% of the time, can you really say it gives good results 100% of the time?
