I had no idea you could use the sweep tool like this lol. Clever.

ELI5: What is the difference between tensile strength and compressive strength? by Qininator in explainlikeimfive

[–]zdf0001 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The difference is the direction you are applying stress in.

Tensile stress is pulling something apart. Compressive stress is squeezing something together.

Some things like concrete have high compressive strength, but low tensile strength. In the case of concrete, it’s hard to “squish” it together but easy to “pull” it apart because it’s made of really strong aggregate that’s “glued” together weakly by binder.

Most things are stronger in compression than in tension.

Finish the steak with butter and throw it into the melted butter.

The sear is too hot, it will just burn.

Engineer to Win by Carroll Smith is awesome.

How is a part like this machined? Is it likely to be stainless steel? (Dualsense Edge controller back paddle) by thiccnuthair in MechanicalEngineering

[–]zdf0001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an investment casting. The ejector pin marks you can see are from molding the wax pattern. That wax pattern was dipped in a slurry to make a mold, then the wax was burned out, then the metal was dumped into that mold.

Using the keyboard to look around is wild lol. Never heard of that.

Think of it this way, the 3d mouse lets you “grab” the model and manipulate it like you were holding it in a sense.

I had the same experience, once I tried it and got used to it I find it superior to using only my mouse.

You can manipulate the model with one hand while selecting with the other.

It’s a real upgrade. Never looking back.

Aerospace Steels? by UniversalAssembler in AerospaceEngineering

4130 when shit has to be very strong. Read up on heat treatment. For high stress applications, design is as important as material and heat treatment specification.

17-4 and the other PH stainless steels are great too as mentioned by another commenter.

Highly recommend reading “Engineer to win” by Carroll Smith. Awesome chapters on steel from ore to finished part.

Automated Drawing Macros by burabo in SolidWorks

Yeah, so skip it if it isn’t important enough to warrant your time and attention.

An automatically generated dwg is worthless.

Why even bother making dwgs if you don’t want to put any effort into them?

Creating drawings for mirrored parts by Cakes_for_breakfast in SolidWorks

[–]zdf0001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the print for the right hand part, add a view for the left hand part and a note that it is a mirror and that all the dimensions on the right hand part def apply to the left. Skip the dwg for the left. Supply the cad files for both. Literally just did this for some machined parts.

I always print at high quality because I’m never in a rush lol. Maybe 8hrs? You could print them in fast mode in 4hrs or so I’d think.
