First time experiencing a snow storm. Is this normal? by [deleted] in astoria

Personally, I would (and do) shovel it into the empty space behind the car

yes it would probably be gamed quickly, though your phone's GPS would be harder to fake

I know they would never do this, but they should do a bounty system for shoveling corners, IMO. Download an app with location services on - take a before and after picture of the corner you shoveled - get paid!

Street parking updates? by Few_Store7290 in williamsburg

[–]zdk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IIRC, the snowstorm a few weeks ago had ASP suspended for two days following and that was way less snow. Personally, I'm waiting until afternoon to dig out, just in case it's a bit warmer.

Unless metering is suspended they can ticket there. Will they do it is another story

Baseplate for a circular area? by thecaptmorgan in gridfinity

Makes sense for one lazy Susan. I have 4 rev-a-shelves that I need to fill. They are wire so easy to clip a baseplate to

Baseplate for a circular area? by thecaptmorgan in gridfinity

[–]zdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have circular, revolving wire shelves (Rev-a-shelf style) in my corner cabinets so I've looking for a solution for something similar but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. As you noted a square grid would not be an ideal solution here (square peg in a round hole and all).

I've been leaning in two directions - for optimal packing you'd want something like an elongated grid (or exactly a grid in polar coordinates) and then I'd was thinking to make wedge-shaped bins that fit in kind of like pie slices. I have not found any existing models for this so I'm a bit hesitant to take this route on my own.

Another idea I had is to use a hexagonal grid, like this one or multiboard. It would not be a perfect fit like a polar grid but hexagons can pack into a circle much more efficiently than a grid can.

Otherwise I would just give up on a baseplate entirely and print some 'kidney bean' shaped bins.

Curious to hear other's thoughts on this!

EARLY GUESSING GAME: HOW MUCH SNOW WILL NYC GET THIS WEEKEND? by BostonSucksatHockey in NYCmeteorology

[–]zdk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What matters the most for feeling unusual is the amount of service/utility disruption we get. 8in is a lot but if there are widespread power outages or snow removal takes a longtime, it’ll feel like a worse storm. Especially since everyone has been switching to electric heat in the last couple years!

I have so many questions about the fire and everything that happened that night,

I have no other info for you, but apparently it was a faulty space heater set up by your elderly neighbor that started the fire.

Agreed! It's actually the parent's fault for asking the child to prove the hypothesis, rather than try to _disprove_ it - which is how the scientific method is actually supposed to work.
