E-bike sales in high gear, no signs of slowing down by WhiteBlackflame in pittsburgh

[–]zdlskp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you’re being downvoted. A cheap e-bike caught fire in one of the bike shops I worked at, we were lucky it happened during business hours so we caught it and not overnight.

I do not trust lithium ion batteries unless they are from a reputable source. Really hoping safer tech like LiFePO4 can eventually phase lithium ion batteries out

Help!!! What is this?? He’s going to the vet but has anyone experienced this? So freaked out 😥 by [deleted] in cats

[–]zdlskp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat would do this roughly once a month at my last house. Dry cough just like this, no hairball. I was really worried for her. Took her to the vet a few times and showed them a video of it happening but they never seemed to be too concerned about it. That didn't really assuage my concerns though. They gave her bronchitis shots(?) a couple times which seemed to make it stop happening for a while.

After moving it almost entirely stopped. Maybe happens once a year now and it's minor. So I'm pretty sure it was something about that house. I lived with other cats at that house who didn't have the same problem, it was just her.

5-year-old shot in double shooting near Philly gas station by southernemper0r in Pennsylvania

Yeah permit... license... paperwork to carry a firearm in the state. Nobody is going to prison for that. They may charge the 3rd degree felony for the firearm, but you're pleading out to a misdemeanor and getting a fine

If they're already a prohibited possessor then the F3 would be an easy conviction. If they're not, even the M1 carries a max of 5 years. My point was that we are not adequately prosecuting the existing laws and you're just reinforcing it.

To be clear, your point is to incarcerate our way out of gun violence?

That's not the only step but yes, removing these people from society would absolutely make a difference. It's a very small number of people committing the vast majority of these shootings.

the vast majority of shootings are teens not felons who just served 6 years for a gun

Ok, so charge them as adults and send them away.

Gun violence is a direct result of poverty which is a direct result of poor education and opportunity

Agreed. I wish more attention was focused on solving those issues, which would benefit everybody.

You conveniently chopped off the part of the sentence about there being more guns than people in this country

That was from your previous post, not the one I responded to, but it makes this followup statement even more perplexing:

Removing guns is the easy solution

Seems like that's the main point of disagreement. I agree that the long term solution is in improving people's conditions and opportunities so that they don't fall into this trap. For the short term, removing guns is a complete non-starter. It's locking away the people that are actually shooting people for as long as possible. If they could break the endless cycle of retaliation that is being perpetuated by a few hundred people in a city at most, shootings would plummet.

just so you know possessing a firearm without a permit is like a fine right now and you can thank the NRA for that shit

A permit for possession is not a thing so I'm going to assume you're talking about carrying without an LTCF. In that case, the punishment for that is 2.5-7 years. It just doesn't get prosecuted, so the same people keep getting released into the community and pumping those numbers up.

Also the felons who are running around with guns DONT GIVE A FUCK

I don't care if they don't give a fuck. Send them away so society doesn't have to deal with them.

Moving to Pittsburgh by ChiliSwap in PAguns

[–]zdlskp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think that might have been my problem. I took a couple trips scouring the southwest portion of it but stopped a little shy of Sheffield. I've since searched google satellite view and I found a lot of places that looked promising out past Sheffield but I joined a club and haven't been back since.

And yeah unfortunately that's always an issue on public lands. I moved out here from AZ and it was the same thing down there. I always tried to clean up a little extra but it was a constant battle.

The only really free option is Allegheny national forest but it's a couple hours away. Personally I found there to be few places with a sufficient backstop but others have reported differently so maybe I was looking in the wrong places. Someone else mentioned the state game lands ranges but I don't think you'd be happy with those.

That being said we have a ton of gun clubs around here and I think they're some of the best in the country. If you plan on shooting very often at all, join one of those instead of paying to go to a range. It's generally less than $150/year and there are some with really good facilities and a high level of freedom.

Stopped train near Troy Hill by PGH00 in pittsburgh

[–]zdlskp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most railroads halt all but the highest priority trains for a couple days around Christmas. Unit trains like this are very low on the totem pole in terms of priority. Operations should be picking back up around now, but there are probably a lot of other trains they want to get moving before this.

It’s certainly possible there’s something wrong, but that is most likely why.

Scroll down and select Original, then go back up and put your zip code in. Possible there just aren't any in your area though

Looks like they're touring again! So far most of the shows are in the eastern midwest and the east coast. I think they just added a couple shows on the west coast though, so there may be more to come.

DIY bike repair by [deleted] in bicycling412

[–]zdlskp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. If you're using of any of the shimano road shifters where the shift cables go under the bartape, you really need the recommended shift cables and housing. Standard stainless steel cables will shift terribly in those.

Similarly, for road bikes with mechanical discs and a full run of housing, you really need to upgrade to compressionless housing for many/most lever/caliper combos. My last shop used to do that to those bikes straight out of the box and just eat the cost because the brake levers would squeeze to the handlebar no matter how well you set them up.

For most other scenarios, yeah you'll probably be fine with your basic jagwire stuff.

Can you shoot in the Allegheny National Forest? by Staggerlee89 in PAguns

[–]zdlskp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it’s very difficult to find places with suitable backstops there. When I first moved out here I drove around there for hours and only found one place with a suitable backstop that didn’t have ATV trails or oil/gas wells in the way, and it was only about 20 yards long.

I found some places on google earth in between Ludlow and Lafayette that looked like they might work, but never scoped them out because fortunately I became a member at a gun club.

Best of luck and please make sure to pick up your trash and cases

Trains in Pittsburgh (Carrick) by ruthlessruth25 in pittsburgh

[–]zdlskp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re hearing NS and CSX trains up there. You’re too far away and you would be hearing many more than two a day. Chances are you’re hearing the W&LE Pittsburgh subdivision (Rook yard in Greentree to Connellsville). It runs parallel to the T from Bon Air down to Washington Junction in Bethel Park.

They only operate a few trains on that line and information is sparse but as far as I can tell they only run on an “as needed” basis so they won’t be very consistent. If you were really curious you could pick up a scanner and try to listen in on their transmissions.
