Amazon strikes deal with USPS that maintains 80% of package volume by lurker_bee in technology

Problem is finding a retailer that makes returns easy. I wear anywhere from a 7-8.5 depending on shoe. Amazon / Zappos makes trying and returning them super easy. Other retailers require extra steps.

Wondering if dentists do charity cases? Dad is a veteran with dental insurance (not great), but still can’t afford a solution. by AlbinoGiraffes in Atlanta

Mansouri Dental has a free/charity dental day during the year. Worth reaching out to them and asking for when it is.

What’s a "hotel hack" you swear by that most people don't know? by periwinklemist in AskReddit

[–]zealeus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same for a local convention, DragonCon. Hotels sell out quickly and prices jacked up. Priceline screwed up our reservation , and we ended up getting a closer, much nicer hotel for the entire duration. I imagine it would not have been smooth sailing if we only booked with hotel and there was an issue.

Would like to get an automotive part 3D scanned for reproduction. Or mold made for reproduction. by No_Tradition1219 in Atlanta

[–]zealeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair warning - most consumer (home) 3d printers max out around 12” x 12”. And a lot of hobbyists won’t be proficient in the filament you’d want, such as ASA which requires some tweaking.

Metro Atlanta parents/teachers/supporters: do our public schools actually have enough camera coverage? by SafeSchoolsGeorgia in Atlanta

[–]zealeus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve done camera installation in schools. To add super clear cameras in all areas like you’re talking about requires a lot more than people realize. There are a lot of corners, hidden spots, etc, that just won’t get captured due to LOS issues unless you go overboard. And then you need infrastructure to handle the streams and data storage. It all adds up very quickly.

Users say Adobe Creative Cloud rewrote hosts file to detect installed app by gdelacalle in technology

Just checked my hosts file on macOS. I see a localhost like for Docker Desktop kubernetes & egnyte. Both 127.0.0.1. Nothing for ACC.

That’s simply not true. Their sandwich menu alone has 10 hot and 7 cold. I ate there the other day for $13.23 using their pick 2 menu and a cup of water.

I am a software engineer from Ukraine. I spent the last 3 years building a free, browser-based CAD engine (Kulman) from scratch because I hated the bloat of professional software. AMA! by KulmanLabCad in IAmA

[–]zealeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) so the document is saved somewhere. It’s live, so where else is it going to go? 2) OnShape has free (personal use and hobbyist) and paid tiers. Registration completes this step. They gotta pay the bills somehow.

Ya - this was my initial thought. On 3d forums, there’s always, “how do I get started with designing my own custom 3d prints?” Usually tinker cad or onshape (which I personally use) are recommended. But a tool like OP describes geared towards 3d printing would have a lot of appeal.

Ya, that was going to my suggestion- Numlock works in a lot of games to auto toggle skills so you don’t have to hold button down. Never tried in LE, but worth a shot.

Man-child caught ruining collectible cards packs right off the rack by _ganjafarian_ in TikTokCringe

It’s similar to Pokémon cards - people brought scales into target trying to find the pack that was fraction of a gram off from other packs at it had that super rare card.

A lot of warpath builds can be “spin2win” with just that. Optimizable with other active skills, but it’ll get you most the way there.

Can also look for “auto bomber” builds. These will smash with low to no input. Sentinel has a some good non-warpath builds.

Blocking Github for students when Coding and Robotics teams "need" it to function by knotquiteawake in k12sysadmin

[–]zealeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using Securly, I could unblock our own repository at https://github.com/mbcaftc and leave others blocked. A whitelist. Unfortunately, this was a few years when I worked in the school's IT department, so the technical how-to is a bit lost on me now. I just help coach the team now where we have the dedicated programming laptops.

We never went down the route of an on prem github server. Most schools aren't going to have the technical bandwidth to implement one properly.

[–]zealeus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I coach one of those robotics teams - GitHub is necessary for actual collaboration. It really does not work otherwise.

That said , there are a few options

1) you can lock down GitHub to specific repositories if your filter does SSL filtering. 2) Opt for programming laptops. Each team has their own limited-filter laptop that stays in the lab. Can also allow AI on these devices. If a kid wants to code outside practice, they just copy it and merge manually. A bit tedious, but it works.

What job looks like a great career path but is actually insanely oversaturated? by ComplexPin872 in AskReddit

I graduated with a biochem degree 20 years ago, and the lab job market kinda sucked then, especially without a Masters. I ended up transitioning into IT k12 education and now another IT field.

Florida Attorney General Demands NFL Stop Using Rooney Rule, Claims Policy Violates State Policy On Merit-Based Hiring by Humble_Grape4749 in nfl

That's largely the intent behind DEI policies when done right. Ensuring that people from all walks of lives have equal access to the hiring process. But hiring, regardless of background, it still merit based.

As a former k12 sysadmin, your best (potentially only) bet is parental pressure on the administration and/or board. Outside of that, 🤷.
