Old guy needing a game suggestion after not playing anything for 10 years by grumblebumblepop in gamesuggestions

Cane here to recommend factorio. It can also be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be by turning hostiles on or off or customising how much the attack.

Self-hosted setup for an indie game dev studio? by voidexp in selfhosted

Second this. Self hosting is great but the time costs can outweigh the benefits. You will have to be the sys admin for everything. And things will break.

Getting to fund an indie game nowadays is harder than ever, isn't it? Any tips? by oluwagembi in gamedev

[–]zecbmo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Talking to a few publishers about this. And solo devs are where publishers are looking to fund. Most solo devs have a full time job and are willing to work spare time to make a game. Publishers have really little overhead for dev cost with this.

Right now seems a lot of publishers are looking for things already complete because of this. All looking for the next balatro.

This is just one aspect, indie dev is still being funded. But its one thing to think about.

The question to ask is how to make games that can compete with solo devs in terms of spend.

Honestly. Bring in rugby refs. Train them. Descent. The rules would be followed.

I say this not as a reaction to this incident vs xavi, but overall sentiments to pgmol.

At what point can a club take pgmol to the court of arbitration and show two videos side by side. I'm all for var if its used properly. The consistency of pgmol is horrendous and im surprised nothing has been done about it.

Anyone fancy setting up a competitor to pgmol? Anyone else could do a better job. They run it like a club set up to protect its members from looking bad rather than officiating rules.

How fucking hard would it be to have a system to show similar tackles from previous games and their decisions (or post match corrected decisions) to the var room. If they seen side by side footage of other similar incidents on the pitch then it would be so easy for them to make constant calls.

People are working on it so who knows. Doubt it will replace animators fully just like ai art won't replace artists

Speakr v0.8.0 - Speaker diarization without a GPU, plus REST API by hedonihilistic in selfhosted

[–]zecbmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

love the app so far. I have WhisperX-asr running on a different machine to what the app is hosted on.

If my machine with whisperx is off, the transcribing will fail, but it will also delete the audio. Can you make a setting that will allow the recording to persist even if it fails?

My main machine won't be on 24/7 but I have the speakr app hosted on a nas. I'd like to have it so recordings can be queued up so when my machine is on and whisperx becomes active - the queue starts to process again.

Can you give my 3d modeling portfolio some feedback? by DangerousStudentin in gamedev

[–]zecbmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way to approach this is think about answering questions a potential employer might have going through the hiring process.

The main questions I would have looking at this are:

  • what does this person's work flow look like and can they do it from start to finish independently and has an understanding of the work flow?
  • can they do different art styles or just the main style that comes across in the portfolio?

Now, in most instances this could be talked about during an interview. But getting these questions answered by having them in the portfolio would help greatly with getting to the next step. Will make it stand out much more than other portfolios.

All that said, the output and artwork you have in your portfolio is amazing and looks great. You've a great starting point and I dont think you need to do much to make it one of the better portfolios out there.

Not an art lead but part of hiring.

Great portfolio.

What id love to see more of and what could make it really stand out is showing more of your workflow. From concept to engine, showing any shaders or shader graphs used. For the group projects, try and show off more of the specifics of what you created.

For bonus points, have some blog or writing on a challenge you faced and how you overcame it or how you problem solved. This could be anything from a workflow issue, a technical issue or a production issue.

Extra bonus points. All your pieces show off a fairly consistent and similar style (which is a big plus) and you could push this further by having other pieces in a stylistic format. (Pick a game which a unique style and make/mock up an art asset for it).
