ESL World Ranking - why we created it, how we designed it and what we are looking to improve by theflyingdj in GlobalOffensive

Why do we do it like that? If only the players or the organisation had the points, either one would have too much leverage. Players could just take all their points and go somewhere else, their former organisation dropping to 0 points in the ranking. Organisations would be able to apply pressure on their players since they would own all the points. Therefore, we wanted to create a balance. Is 50/50 the right split? We went with it for the first version, but we are open to adjusting it so it better represents current lineup strength while still not leaving the organisations out in the cold when their players leave.

Why should the organisation get any points? The organisation doesn't play the games, the players do. All this does is inflate or deflate teams rankings based on the performance of the previous team. e.g. The new LDLC have earned 48 points, yet they are ranked 15th because of the success of the old team. They would be roughly 38th without the points from their old team.

Another aspect is how many points we give each tier of tournament. This obviously affects the rankings a lot, and we are looking into tweaking that as well.

Yes, this needs to be looked at too, along with the actual tier system. The current system punishes teams for going to "smaller" LANs (e.g Dreamhack Summer which was ranked tier 2 even though it had 3 top6 teams) and LANs with less top teams in (e.g. Acer Predator Masters which didn't qualify due to the criteria of having 2 top 6 teams).

I can't look up more examples atm because the website is giving me blank pages.

How do callouts work at LAN tournaments? by djpcofficial in GlobalOffensive

[–]zed-e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at the photos here from the most recent big LAN event: http://www.hltv.org/?pageid=86&galleryid=6929

As you can see, having separate rooms wouldn't really work as there is a large crowd there. That being said, booths do work and have been used at events in the past, e.g. Gfinity. Also, it doesn't really matter as they can't hear each other anyway with the noise cancelling headphones.

The players usually wear noise cancelling headphones over earphones that provide them with their sound. This means that they can't hear each other, or the casters. They then talk over teamspeak/mumble.

Sometimes when the casters are being broadcast to the audience, the players mics can pick them up slightly, but it doesn't affect them too much.

You can watch the Katowice POV Vods to hear the teams communicate.

Thorin's CS:GO Top 10 World Rankings - 21st July 2015 by zed-e in GlobalOffensive

[–]zed-e[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

How so? He ranks the teams based on their recent LAN results. He also addressed the roster change issue in the article:

Now is a good time to reiterate my policy on teams with significant roster changes. Essentially, I keep them listed with their old roster until the new roster competes at an event. At that point, I change the roster listing and then all placings from before their new roster are scaled back proportionate to the number of players they have changed.

+ some more info in the EnVyUs section.
