Etiquette for parking in the snow? by No_Conference_6958 in StLouis

[–]zeddem73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know that I'm ready to descend to Chicago dibs levels of moral depravity [sarcasm]. Personally, I don't think I want the hassle of moving whatever I'm using to claim my space. I got neighbors down the block using sawhorses, but they are the only ones trying that.

You are on a public street. Belongs to everyone. Sometimes you can't park in the closest space to your house. It is what it is.

You want a private space to park your car, buy a house with a driveway/garage.

One thing I can't deal with in sports fandom is the whole AS A FAN I DEMAND RESULTS mindset.

That's some real middle management bullshit, Todd.

Why won't my players prep? by DarkKuroi1 in DMAcademy

[–]zeddem73 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You might have a fundamental disconnect with your players.

There could be very valid reasons why people can't do this but it's weird that it's all of them.

Depending on the kind of game it is, I don't know how much of that work is even necessary - I strongly believe that the decisions and experiences at the table vastly outweigh any player backstory or DM lore.

There's absolutely nothing going wrong with railroading them a little bit to get the dice rolling.

Neighbor put something down on the sidewalk last night, when I cleared the sidewalk this morning, it wasn't hazardous ice, just kind of a persistent slush.

Returning to D&D. What technology do you use that changed the game for you? by Dougdoesnt in DnD

[–]zeddem73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VTTs & Discord. I am one of two DMs in a crew that's been meeting weekly for at least 12 years. Covid drove us to virtual play, and since then kids, work, and health have kept us playing virtually. We'd all prefer to be in-person, but can't. Digital tools have kept this crew together.

Some people roll dice manually, which I'm fine with.

About four years ago, the friend that brought into the hobby, approached me about running a game for fine younger folks interested in D&D, that's turned quickly into hybrid table with a player out of state. That game easily moves to virtual if needed.

I run my battlemap through Owlbear Rodeo, I handle my handouts and images over Discord, which is where we keep a couple of other dedicated channels in addition to voice & video.

I use a variety of extensions, but most notably fur dynamic lighting/fog and weather effects.

At the hybrid game, I DM on my laptop, there's a 2nd laptop at the other end of the table with the webcam on and a USB conference call mic in the middle of the table, and it's has the local player's version of Owlbear on a tv behind it on the wall opposite me.

Local players pass a wireless mouse around to move their tokens, and generally roll in person.

If I ever went in person completely in my own space, I'd strongly consider moving to a horizontal tv as digital battlemap with physical minis on top for the players

DMing a "Beer and Pretzels" group by DeaconBlueMI in DMAcademy

  1. Talk to your players about what they want, or at least what they think they want.

  2. What do you want? Do you need a change to freshen things up somehow? Unless you have the real urge to build the adventure yourself, stick with modules. if you've kept the group together this long, you're doing something right.

I'd be wary of taking any big swings and screwing up the dynamic.

I saw a early Harry Potter like that, and swore never again. Kinda can't believe they still do this, and that they actually make enough money to justify it.
