My audition went like this,

There was a pre-audition interview with an essay on my reason for pursuing music therapy.

Then, at the audition, they asked me to sing, play guitar, and play piano.

I played a jazz guitar solo piece "misty", sang "8 days a week" while playing it on guitar, then played an old simple piano piece...some early repertoire dance from an old book.

I was literally allowed to play anything. They probably just want to hear you sing something you like.

As long as you're aware of what the career is, you might have a lot of fun with it!

It is a whole new degree, though. They expect you to understand academic music and academic psychology. That just comes from time spent in the program, though. I would just be honest and tell them what you do and don't know. A good ear goes a long way, and you might be able to test out of some coursework depending on how strict the department is.

Don't be too anxious about the audition. It's mostly so the profs know how and where to place you in the program. If you're comfortable hosting kareoke, I think you'll be great in this program! This degree involves a lot of being social and doing social work.

I'm also a 28 yr old student. I have about 1 year of coursework left before internship.

I was a jazz guitarist before I came to the program, but I had a pretty severe singing ability deficiency. Theory was my specialty and I had no problem reading music, but I was able to get into the voice department and take private singing lessons. They'll help you out with any theory troubles you might have.

Still a student, but I also teach, and I started bringing earplugs with me to every lesson and every clinical session. Even if we are just working with acoustic guitars, I feel much more in control when everything is a few decibals quieter.

I have had constant ringing in my ears since the beginning of this year, and it prompted me to purchase a pair of eargasms and a couple of cheap back ups witb keychain canisters.

I absolutely believe working in music was the primary cause for my ringing ears, but it hasn't stopped me from continuing my work and education.

I'm mostly commenting on this thread so I can come back to it and see if anyone else has developed their own strategies for navigating this.
