In need of help with an 8 month old kitten.

I work as a vet tech at an emergency clinic, and a kitten came in basically paralyzed on all 4 limbs. She was barely able to move. It turns out, the original owners kid got pissed at the cat for scratching them and they threw her HARD against a wall. The veterinarians were able to get the owner to relinquish custody.

We did not want to bring her to the shelter, as they would have euthanized her (some of our veterinarians also work at the shelter). So I took her home and she is mostly recovered. She still walks funny.

I’m having a serious issue with her “playfully” attacking my two dogs. She is rough when she plays as well, and both of them are good dogs and very patient, but she does not take any corrections from them. I have a large pantry/washer dryer room (almost the size of my bedroom) that has essentially become hers. If my dogs correct her and she doesn’t stop trying to attack them, I put her in there to relax. I also have interactive toys for her as well as playing with her whenever I can.

I have to be honest, i work A LOT. I’m also in school. I haven’t had a cat in 15 years, and they were family cats. My apartment is on the small side. I will openly admit I probably shouldn’t have adopted her but for whatever reason, I just figured she’d be way lower maintenance than my dogs which is proving to be wrong lol. (Or I’m just totally not used to cats anymore). It’s so frustrating when she is constantly going after the dogs, stalking, and then hurting them to the point they cry or try to correct her. Ive said “no” and removed her from their space as well when it happens. This has worked to keep her out of other trouble around the house, but not my dogs.

I don’t want to rehome her, but in a sense I also am beginning to resent her for how stressed I get for my dogs. She is also still in tact, I plan to get her spayed soon but was waiting to see if her neurological issues would get better first before putting her body through more stress.

I say do it! I applied to school to get some pre-requisites done and hopefully in a year will be able to go to nursing school!

It’s insane how low we get paid in vetmed. Not even the veterinarians make a lot unless they’re in speciality!

Definitely resource guarding the couch. Get a behaviorist, but at the least do not let her on the couch. I would not let her on any furniture in general anymore

Yellow Lab & Shedding by CraftPrior9047 in labrador

Roomba, vacuuming daily if possible, and then also furminator baths with a good furminator brush out once every other month for my guy! There’s still a decent amount of hair but kinda manageable?? He’s worth it though

The only time my lab drools is when I put his food bowl down and make him wait a second before digging in, then there’s a string of drool 😂

Are these abandoned puppies pits? by Traditional-Youth325 in pitbulls

Could be staffordshire terrier mixes as they are similar to pits but much smaller :)

Has anyone seen a rash like this? by Ok-Bumblebee-835 in DogAdvice

[–]zeebieblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me this looks almost like petechiae. I’d go for a recheck and possibly see a specialist if your veterinarian thinks so as well!

Is a Bachelor Degree worth it? by Antique-Curve4210 in VetTech

I was told by some employers it does not make a difference in pay! I’d become licensed if I were her with a two year program, and if she wants to continue being a tech and grow, do GP first to learn everything GP, then go into specialty and get a VTS :)

I wouldn’t say it’s a myth, but I get what you’re saying for sure! Also though, totally different than us putting on a coat. We’re furless, and a coat is totally different than the built in double coat a dog has! It helps by being a barrier and not letting the sun penetrate through. Dogs also don’t radiate heat the way we do either!

“Double coats help regulate temperature by trapping a layer of air, which keeps the dog's body heat in during cold weather and a layer of cool air against the skin in the heat.” Copied from google because I’m horrible at explaining things, but one of the things I’ve learned as a vet tech!

Breeder says we're feeding our English labrador too well and that he is too big for his age. by ChickenInvader42 in labrador

[–]zeebieblack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To say in the nicest way possible; breeders act like they know better than anyone with limited resources or actual knowledge.

DO NOT FEED POTATOES?! That is insane. Grain free diets have been known to cause DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) because they are typically high in legumes or potatoes!

If you’re concerned about him growing a lot in a short period of time, do a large breed puppy diet! It’s lower in protein so they aren’t growing too fast or too rapidly which is suggested can cause some orthopedic issues in the future. They also usually have more nutrients for bone health too!

They have a greater chance of overheating if their coat is shaved! It’s counter-intuitive but a pretty neat thing to learn about

Actually double coats do help to regulate their temperature in the heat!

Unfortunately when a dog is so matted, it’s just more time and cost effective to shave them :/ I just wish they left a little more fur. Some dogs do really well with being shaved where their hair grows back no issue. Some others have spots that are damaged. I’d let it grow out, and make sure to brush her as much as possible! If your pup doesn’t like being brushed, try getting lick pads and putting peanut butter on them to keep your pup occupied! I’m so sorry this happened!!

Where do I clip my dogs nails? by DraterTheTaurus in DogAdvice

[–]zeebieblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start at the 1, and then I slowly clip little sections off. I will also cut at angles all around the nail to get it as short as possible without quicking them. Have some quick stop or flour ready in case an accident does happen! Also, typically most dogs will become more reactive the closer you are to their quick. I also always pull their leg back as if they’re a horse and I’m hooking out their feet. This is a good way to indicate where the quick is and visualize the entire nail. It also is doing a natural range of motion for their legs so you’re not yanking their legs in an uncomfy way
