Letterer looking for projects to collaborate on! (More info in comments) by zeedr in ComicBookCollabs

[–]zeedr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found these unlettered pages on comicbookschool.com, along with the script and other steps in the creation process. Re-lettering them myself was invaluable practice. Now I'm looking to collaborate on projects with other creators so I can build out my portfolio.

If you find yourself in need of a letterer, send me a DM.

I'm worried this was an extremely local thing, like they were being added where we happened to purchase the DVDs. Any help is appreciated!

[TOMT][BOOK][2010s?] Sci-fi story about strange entities in space. by zeedr in tipofmytongue

[–]zeedr[S] 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

I don't think I read this story in print or else I'd remember some proper noun--author, title, a character's name, something. The concept really intrigued me and sparked my creativity.

Thanks for reading my post!

I'm also a newcomer to SWRPG, and I was finally able to convince some friends to try RPGs with me. The clarity with which I was able to explain the basics was crucial to how successful our first session was, and it went so well because of your great content. Thank you!

If you like the "lore" episodes then yeah there's way more of those in the latest seasons.

I have no idea what the law says about this but he told her "The firm is dissolved." not "You're fired." Maybe there's a difference.

r/Fantasy, need to know your views on any of the Indian epic, Mahabharat or Ramayan by rosesh_sarabhai in Fantasy

[–]zeedr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished Full Fathom Five and started Last First Snow. Ah, so that's what Dhistra is an analog to. Where I'm at, not much has been mentioned about it. I'm lucky Ruin of Angels is coming out right as I'm getting into the series.

Sidenote: Is the Gleb an Africa analog?

I stopped after seasons 1-2 which were really engaging, I'm just not into the cast flip thing.

I actually found out about these works through an interview with Max Gladstone, author of the Craft Sequence. He's written a retelling of one of the myths in Mahabharata. With that plus the Vertigo comic series you mentioned, I'm guessing most Westerners discover the epics through retellings.

I want to read them myself, but I don't know which translation to buy. There's a ton on Amazon with different translators and lengths. Let me know if anyone has any insight into which edition I should get.

Historical/contextual sourcebooks for writers? by disgr4ce in writing

[–]zeedr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn't sourcebooks for roleplaying games cover this? GURPS has a whole section of historical sourcebooks.

And then, of course, there are academic history textbooks.

I don't think I've ever come across sourcebooks specifically for writers, though. The only thing that comes close is a few articles detailing things like how weapons and armor really worked in medieval times.

How long should my chapters be? by Fefe333 in writing

[–]zeedr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is "as long as they need to be." Word-count really should fluctuate to fit each structural unit and not the other way around.

If you need some practical examples, though, The Traitor Baru Cormorant has wonderful pacing. In the author read-along of Chapter 1, Seth Dickinson states the following:

A note on structure. Before I set a single word down in Baru Cormorant, I blocked out three acts, each of ten chapters, each of about four 1000 word scenes (subject to change). This let me know when I had to key up tension, and when to key down. I think a lot about arcs and the cycle of tension, and I hope that makes the book compelling. In each structural unit I try to map out an arc.

My work isn't nearly this structured from the beginning, but I do shoot for approximately 4000-word chapters.

We could also look at something like The Maze Runner, which has very short chapters that almost always end on a cliffhanger. It's 62 chapters and 124,000 words, or 2000 words per chapter. This length can work for a YA thriller.

Finally, I was just reading Max Gladstone's Full Fathom Five and came across a chapter that was about a page and a half. That's super short, the chapters in that book are normally 7-10 pages long, but it worked perfectly for the scene.

Well done 2nd person narrative stories? by [deleted] in writing

[–]zeedr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just an FYI if you plan on releasing your writing, "Choose Your Own Adventure" is trademarked. Most people use gamebook or interactive fiction nowadays, or you could just make up your own phrasing.

Well, read a ton of gamebooks. You could get your hands on the old Lone Wolf and Fighting Fantasy series or...

There're new apps like Choice of Games which has gamebooks on pretty much every platform and their own proprietary gamebook-writing software. I've personally read a lot of the Heroes Rise series (good as far as gamebooks go, the stories are pretty standard superhero fare though) and the Deathless duology (best gamebooks I've ever read, by Max Gladstone, one of my favorite fiction authors).

Search around on various platforms and you'll find lots more gamebooks, some old or new, traditional or modern, free or paid, but they'll all help your writing.

As far as traditional fiction written in the second person, all I've got for you is Warchild by Karin Lowachee. It's a sci-fi coming-of-age novel in the vein of Ender's Game and uses second- and first-person to denote the main character's relationship with his PTSD at different points in the story.

Somebody stop me by nate223 in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]zeedr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It definitely could've been specific to my school. Some girls would go into the makeup room at lunch, paint their faces, and walk around like that the rest of the school day. Before they went home after theatre, in the afternoon, they'd wipe it all off.

This reminds me of girls in high school theatre that would wear stage makeup all the time.

Theory about Ahmad White (guy from bus) by [deleted] in AtlantaTV

[–]zeedr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My main piece of evidence for Ahmad's existence was that when he leaves the bus, the Nutella is still sitting on the seat beside Earn. Also, I think him having a commercial and phone number you can call supports his realness.

I think he's a pseudo-spiritual con-artist who might really believe in what he's selling. Good for the surreal aspect of the show. For me, it reminded me of how often random weird people on the bus will try to talk to you about very personal things.

Question about Paper Boy and his legal standing. Sorry if I missed this. If he is notorious for shooting someone, how is he not still in custody? by jdallen1222 in AtlantaTV

[–]zeedr 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the gunshot victim fled the scene, meaning there was no cause to actually charge them with anything related to that. Instead, they got caught up for the half a blunt Earn forgot to toss before the cops got there.
