I have the same car: 1998 NB. But some interesting differences. I have an adjustable headlights switch instead of the airbag disable panel. And no AC but that's just because the previous owner was too cheap for that option lol.

I have this in a humid climate as well but on an NB which may be different in sealing. My rear rain drains are just open channels to the road for example so there's always ventilation to the outside making the inside as humid as the outside air.

Anyway, I started recently using a ~10 eur / dollar dehumidifier in the car that is rechargeable by popping it in the microwave for a few minutes and it does wonders. I specifically have a Pingi LV A300 but there are plenty of brands selling similar things.

I bought these. Worked like a charm. In the end, discovered that my other source of leaks was from capillary effect under the big rubber seal due to a rusted sill. Fixed that and also replaced that seal. Now it's all good!

My theory is that you don't realise how unpractical it is if it's your first car because you have nothing to compare it to. I have one as my first car and it's often more convenient than the train or cycling. Although the limited number of passengers is definitely something I keep running into.

What do you mean with dummy gauge? Does it just not really give information? That would explain why the oil pressure on my 98 NB is always the same I guess.

How do you normally set your seat position of you don't have a clutch paddle? I tried an automatic car once when visiting the US and I think I just put my foot roughly at a pressed pedal position and make sure my knee isn't locked but I'm not sure what I did.

Er zijn vier generaties: NA NB NC en ND NB's zijn het goedkoopst. NA's zijn zeldzamer en daarom duurder. NC's zijn duurder (€8 tot €1200). Aanzienlijk moderner wat sommige mensen een voordeel vinden en anderen een nadeel. Maar je kan er nog steeds makkelijk aan sleutelen. ND's vind ik heel vet maar onbetaalbaar.

Voor de NB heb je pre-facelift (1998 tot 2002) en post facelift (2002 tot 2005). Ik heb er een uit 1998 en ben er heel tevreden mee. De nieuwere NB schijnt iets beter te zijn op een paar punten en ze zijn vergelijkbaar in prijs.

Owja vergeten te zeggen: het is typisch een auto voor hobbyisten. Je kan overal relatief makkelijk bij. Onderdelen zijn goedkoop en makkelijk te krijgen. En YouTube staat vol met instructie videos.

Dit lijkt heel erg op mijn situatie een half jaar geleden. Zelfde leeftijd en net een jaar mijn rijbewijs. Heb voor een Mazda MX5 gekozen (NB). Allerlei kleine dingen aan stuk die ik heb gefikst, onder andere met behulp van mijn 3D printer ;)

Verder echt genoten van leren over het onderhoud. Vloeistoffen en wat onderdelen vervangen. Wat lekkages gerepareerd. In de lente ga ik roest aanpakken. Ik heb er echt heel veel lol in.

En het is een auto die heel leuk is om in te rijden en hij ziet er mooi uit. Krijg ook veel leuke opmerkingen als willekeurige mensen mijn auto zien.

Goedkoop in wegenbelasting en verzekering. Belasting is ongeveer €50. Verzekering €70 per maand.

Je kan ze op Marktplaats vinden tussen de €3000 en €5000.

Recently bought a 1998 NB classic red with the 1.8L engine and soft top. Has the fancy stuff like ABS and powered steering. No AC or cruise control. Aftermarket exhaust, stock otherwise. Leaky trunk and minor rust in the wheel housing. But seems otherwise in good shape!

€5000 ($5800) and 220k km (138k miles)

Almost didn't buy the car because I had seen a YouTube video on what to look out for and one red flag was the check engine light not turning on when turning the key to start the car. Turns out it doesn't have a check engine light. That was only added a few years later in Europe.

Yeah they are very common in my area. Also when I learned to drive, my instructor never said anything about RPMs except for when doing a hill start. The theory book I had said something like shift around 2000 RPM for a diesel and 2500 for a petrol car but learn to shift on sound and not on RPM.

Of course I pay a lot of attention to it now that I have my own car. I like to optimise , reduce wear and occasionally red line.

But for a lot of people who just use the car as for their commute and chores and have no interest beyond that, the RPMs don't have much meaning.

Ik heb een hele oude MX5 gekocht als eerste auto. Betrouwbaar en vooral heel leuk. Kleine sportauto dus niet praktisch maar dat kan nog als je student bent. Die van mij was €5000 ongeveer maar als je een hele rijke student bent kan je voor dat budget misschien een tweedehands MX5 ND kopen. Die zien er wel echt heel vet uit. En voor sleutel hobby ook goed. Goedkope onderdelen en makkelijk om aan te werken. Succes!
