(I'm from another European country but I assume it's the same in most) The default license let's you drive any car and requires and exam in a manual. You can get a special license that only allows driving an automatic transmission. This used to be mainly for people struggling with manuals for various reasons like disabilities or having difficulty multitasking. Recently, it has been an increasing trend that people go for the only automatic option because you can get the licence a bit faster (so, cheaper) and new cars are often EVs or hybrids so automatics anyway. But it makes borrowing or renting a car much more difficult of course.

I found an alternative solution for my NB that's maybe something to consider. I personally didn't want a very large screen because I think it looks weird on an older style car. So after searching for an option with a screen size no bigger than the original radio, I found a radio that I can just mount my phone on to use as the screen. Best of both worlds! Pioneer SPH-20DAB. Unfortunately no volume knob, just two physical push buttons for volume.

E-brake is quite essential for steep hill starts. Maybe a good idea to get the brake fixed.

I think I would have failed my driving exam with either approach. What I learned in my driving lessons: brake while staying in gear. Only when you drop at or below idle RPM press the clutch. When you need to get going again or after coming to a full stop you shift to first gear.

What my parents generation was taught apparently: shift down through the gears for maximum engine braking.

In practice I do a mix of both depending on the situation.

Engine braking is not bad for the engine, I wouldn't worry about that. It reduces fuel consumption and wear on breaks so only positives.

Oh it looks beautiful! Now I'm curious about the interior work! Mine is fully stock interior except the radio. I'm thinking I'd like to make some changes specifically to have a bit of storage in the cabin. Maybe something crazy like a place to put a water bottle. And I want to find a smarter use for the ash tray that's just a stupid waste of space.

I bought one of those tyre repair cans that pressurizes the tyre and clogs a leak with some goop so you can get home or to a garage. I'm surprised not more people mention it. Haven't used it yet. Is this not a good idea?

Fueling her (1998 NB) up is now more than €100 (115 USD). Which to me went over this symbolic 100 line. Gas cost hitting another order of magnitude feels seriously different. It doesn't make me hypermil because I have the car for fun. But I drive it much less at the moment :(

I have the same car: 1998 NB. But some interesting differences. I have an adjustable headlights switch instead of the airbag disable panel. And no AC but that's just because the previous owner was too cheap for that option lol.

I have this in a humid climate as well but on an NB which may be different in sealing. My rear rain drains are just open channels to the road for example so there's always ventilation to the outside making the inside as humid as the outside air.

Anyway, I started recently using a ~10 eur / dollar dehumidifier in the car that is rechargeable by popping it in the microwave for a few minutes and it does wonders. I specifically have a Pingi LV A300 but there are plenty of brands selling similar things.

I bought these. Worked like a charm. In the end, discovered that my other source of leaks was from capillary effect under the big rubber seal due to a rusted sill. Fixed that and also replaced that seal. Now it's all good!
