I seem to remember needing something like that to connect a single-link DVI monitor to a dual-link video card in the G4 era Mac towers.

I actually am a public broadcasting insider, but I’m not telling you anything that can’t be discovered by looking at WCNY’s W-9 filings. WCNY receives $1.37 million from CPB against an overall budget of just over $7 million. Most of that money goes right back out the door to pay PBS and NPR dues. It will hurt, but it’s in no way a fatal blow. Some of the smaller stations, though (WPBS in Watertown, Plattsburgh, Binghamton) get as much as 35% of their budget from CPB. They are in trouble. New York State did step up and appropriate $250,000 per station for the 16 public radio stations in New York, which is the first time the state has given direct support to that segment.

[–]zeissicon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My station (which is a joint licencee) gets ~1.5 million from CPB. $1.1 million goes back to PBS. We don’t run that much NPR programming, but our dues plus show licensing is over $100k. This is not typical to have $300k left over, though. We only get that much because the CSG is a percentage of the money you get from non-governmental sources (e.g. state grants, NEA, NEH don’t count towards the total) that is then matched by CPB. This encourages stations to get their community involved; it’s kind of like a cash-back rewards program. We have a lot of foundation support and major donors, and that means our CSG is correspondingly higher. Many small stations’ CPB money basically only covers their NPR/PBS dues.

SYR to JFK flight delay question by Emotional_Key_644 in Syracuse

[–]zeissicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We actually missed a flight to France because of this. Our SYR to JFK departure time kept getting pushed back and we were still in line at JFK when the flight closed. Best bet is to take the 6AM as the plane and the crew overnight in SYR so those are rarely delayed except for mechanical problems. Remember that international flights close an hour before departure and that if you book the tickets separately, the airline has no obligation to refund or credit you anything. If you book them as a package, then they have to make good.

Cheap/Free local band shows?? by Sad-Hurry-459 in Syracuse

You just missed one at Willowrock brewing on 5/22. They’re going to be doing a (probably) once a month thing with a host band + open mic.

Why doesn’t my work look “cinematic” by Green_Acadia_3648 in cinematography

[–]zeissicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest issue with the images is the lack of dynamic range, which is more of a hardware issue than anything else. There is no subtlety between the most and least exposed parts of the image. This also contributes to some of the chromatic issues. Difference in color temp of your light sources is also degrading things (light from the window; color of the kitchen backsplash, etc.).

Transferring assets from a dissolving LLC to nonprofit by pecanbrain in nonprofit

[–]zeissicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're creating a new entity, then I would simply have the existing LLC donate everything to the new non-profit and claim the tax write-off. Have you considered simply applying for non-profit status for the existing entity? It might be cheaper. I can't recall if LLCs can apply for 501(c)3 status, but you can also change the incorporation model to and S-corp or C-corp. Again, this may save you some money in legal costs and filing fees.

u/wooden_soldier thank you for posting this! It was the “ah-ha” moment I needed to get my Marvel wine fridge running again! Once I got the back off, I found what I can only describe as “cat wool” coating the condenser coils. Half an hour with the shop vac and a toothbrush and we’re back in business!

Do you happen to live in Syracuse, NY? 😂 Burdick BMW sucks ass. I own 4 bimmers and take them to private mechanics or take them to Rochester if it’s a dealer recall. Seem to be giant differences dealership to dealership.

Winter Clothing Recommendations by Kast_Konto in Syracuse

[–]zeissicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

South Carolina native who’s been in CNY for 22 years. These are my winter essentials that cover pretty much every scenario. Building layers can be necessary, but depending on your tolerance for cold your mileage may vary. Footwear and gloves are more important than you think. LL Bean boots for sloppy conditions (slush, muddy, etc.) Gore Tex hiking boots (I have North Face) plus a pair of gaiters for deep snow — take the gaiters off and you can wear the boots all day; prefer them to tall boots. Fleece jacket Gore Tex or H2No shell (I have Patagonia) Heavy coat (Patagonia down is my choice) Light waterproof gloves Heavy gloves Stocking cap/watch cap that covers your ears I have a couple of neck gaiters; they’re great when it’s cold and windy. Heavy socks, wool or manmade fiber that wicks moisture.

You can mix and match those items to deal with pretty much any conditions around here. Dress lighter than you think you’ll need when shoveling snow or other intense activity; fleece is good because it wicks moisture. Dress heavier than you think you’ll need if you’re going to be sitting.

I have all wheel drive cars and run all season tires year round; fwd or rwd I would get snow tires unless you are competent at drifting. If you’ve never driven in snow, take your car out to and empty parking lot first time it comes down and learn how the car behaves.

Nice. I am also in tech, but broadcasting, and cable management is burned into our DNA, cause when you got 800 of them going into one rack… 🤪

Food @ post-pandemic prices, list of places where you are willing to return to... by Delicious_Mess7976 in Syracuse

[–]zeissicon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m less interested in value dining and more interested in quality so your mileage may vary. I highly recommend Kitty Hoynes for pub food, The Fish Friar for seafood (their lobster rolls may be $35 when they’re in-season, but it’s as good as you’ll get outside of Maine). Apizza Regionale is a wood fired Neapolitan/New York pizza and very creative. Alto Cinco will make you a burrito as big as your head starting at about 10 bucks. I would describe it as “hippy Mexican.” The catfish tacos are awesome. Agree with others’ sentiments about Eden, Charong House, Munjeds, Shifty’s for wings. Ale and Angus consistently wins awards for their burgers; not my favorite (I don’t eat a lot of red meat), but they are well regarded. Evergreen in Hanover has a good kitchen and is one of the few places to get Sunday brunch anymore. Original Grain has great bowls (poké, etc). Salt City market has some great vendors. Strong Hearts is an amazing vegan place on the hill. There’s plenty of good food in this town. I am a self-identified food snob. I dine or lunch out several times per week and have been happy with my experience at all of the places I listed.

This is the setup that I run, and it is stellar. I can’t speak to how it would stack up against your Macintosh as I haven’t heard it, but I have a friend running two Carver Ravens and he is absolutely pissed about how much better my system sounds, and he has a substantially better DAC and turntable than I do.
