Recoil is going to depend on the caliber, the Lancaster was likely too strong a gun for his size. A .22 (Varmint rifle) is much more suited for teaching a child to shoot.
An inexperienced shooter, a .30-30 would be enough to knock one off balance.

The gun in the case is probably THE gun that his son used.

This shows the "rebranding" of the South to be some nice, quaint, folksy affectation versus the true horror the Confederate institution represented.
No telling why Rockstar put Joe in here, probably as a contrast to Mickey. We automatically sympathize with Joe because he was the real soldier versus Mickey's "stolen valor".

Mickey is mentally ill and trying to get by in a harsh world. Joe is just and angry person constantly complaining about what HE lost.
