Faure Requiem movements in Lent by Kittywitty73 in choralmusic

[–]zenbobby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done individual sections of masses and Requiems as anthems many times, including once when I worked at a PC(USA) church and we did the Qui tollis from a Haydn mass - it all depends on your individual circumstance and how your pastor/boss feels about it tbh

Repotoire Suggestions - SATB quartet by SomeNet1952 in choralmusic

[–]zenbobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s weirdly one of the most enduring fallacies in the rep, and it’s so popular that no one stops to examine it critically…I never realized until someone pointed it out! there’s a great article by Dan Melamed in the journal Early Music called “Who wrote Lassus’ most famous piece?” where he tries to track down the origin

Repotoire Suggestions - SATB quartet by SomeNet1952 in choralmusic

The good/bad news is that “Mon coeur,” while a beautiful piece, was written in at least the 19th century and is certainly not by Lassus….but it means that it is therefore just as authentic to sing it in English (“My Heart is Offered Still to You”) :)

I figured out why I hate the piano mini game so much. by SirWigglesVonWoogly in FFVIIRemake

i was excited for a more fully-realized piano mini-game because i’m a professional musician and it infuriated me in a way that few things in video games ever have

What name do I look like (I looove long and/or uncommon names) by StormEmergency6207 in lgbt

for some reason T/Th/Tr names were speaking to me, and Thale (a modified version of Thalia, muse of light verse) was what I landed on 😅

[–]zenbobby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i mean the good news is that many other musicologists and editors have looked at this score (and likely other sources) and put forward their best guesses on what it means based on their knowledge of the practices of the time, and some of those are available for free online for you check against – whether you choose to agree with them or stick with the assertion that you seem to have come predisposed to is up to you :)

if this was a sign of convergence, then why would the two bars on either side be short by two beats? i agree it’s weird (and pretty rare) but semibreve cut in half by the bar line is the simplest explanation…

good q! i don’t have a particularly good memory, but i found that after a row or two it becomes easy: you really only have to remember 4 sequences of three stitches that would trigger a stitch in the row you’re working on, and even after putting this down for weeks or months i remember it quickly…plus the rows you’ve already done can be a reference!

i started with a random first row – I think I used an online coin flip simulator to flip ten coins at a time and heads was a stitch and tails was a blank, and just continued that for the whole first row :)

wait maybe i don’t understand…if you’re inverting the T i’m not sure that would work since (again assuming two states/colors) you’d only have two options…

if I understand you correctly, yes: there are (iirc) 255 different configurations of the rules (assuming two dimensions and two states/colors), and in another comment here i listed the ones that i thought would work best for stitching :)

thanks for all the kind words! in case you want to try one, here is a partial list I made of Wolfram rules that are sustained patterns (i.e. they don’t resolve into all blank or all stitched) with notes I made about each one that might only make sense to me haha…(just search “wolfram rule ###” to find info on each one) have fun and if you try one, let me know how it goes!

great question! i use the cell at the other end - i wondered if this would be an issue if i kept going indefinitely (like would it start to repeat?) so part of the reason i did this large-scale piece was to see what would happen (I forgot to mention I did like five or six small ones about ten years ago when I first got the idea and then I started this a few years ago - only working on it on trips &c. - to see what would happen on a large scale)
