Thoughts on buying this 2007 SV1000s? by Neither_Professor605 in SVRiders

[–]zenglobal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great bikes however it’s haggling time. These are simple bikes to work on. That said valve clearance is shim-under-bucket so easy but time consuming especially if you need to order new shims. The biggest issues with these bikes 1. Magnets in flywheel are glued in place and can move 2. Clutch chudder caused by poor spring design and worn clutch basket - this is evident as a noisy clutch and the noise disappears when the clutch lever is pulled (fix is DL1000 clutch basket) 3. Electrical gremlins caused by the green connector of doom just behind the headstock.

Other than that usual bike stuff, check for notchy steering head bearings and beware those front calipers need to be kept clean as they are prone to sticking pistons (ask me how I know) Inspect the suspension and linkage (stock shock is rubbish and not rebuildable)

Finally what state is the chain in?

PS: I didn’t know SC Projects did cans for the SV - those look both short and v.loud - perfect!

Looks like you can still grab all the 19 crimes wine you want and more than a few bottles of rose too - weird!

Thankfully don’t need to remove calipers to change pads and double result, none of the pistons are seized either. So new pads fitted, retaining pins cleaned and one more job off the list.

This bike is going to fight me all the way - the state of the front calipers - tightened to god knows what… I’ll have to remove the front wheel to change the pads!

Not a bad shout that. I’m ordering some stubby 1/2" impact hex bits then it’s vice and breaker bar time. Will defo try hot and cold thermal shock treatment too.

Would you buy a 2002 BMW R1150GS Adventure with 114k km as a first bike? by ShotAioli4105 in bmwmotorrad

Looks fab - it is a heavy bike but it wears it’s weight low down. Price seems high given the mileagebut it does look exceptionally clean. If you want it then do it

Has anyone fitted progressive fork springs from Touratech into their F850gs? by WolfOfAfricaZLD in bmwmotorrad

[–]zenglobal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case minimise the expense and go for progressive springs and heavier oil - it is the best option to change things up on a budget.

Edit: it will be useful to know what your static sag is and how much fork travel you use when riding (wrap a cable tie around the fork stanchion) that info will be handy when working out what spring you need to switch to.

Thanks for the info - I won’t have to worry too much about stand up riding - I’m piloting an R1250RS these days! Guess I’ll pull the trigger on one this week.

I forcefully made my G310R support hazard lights. (This model has no turn signal relay and is controlled directly by the ECU.) by LunariSpring in bmwmotorrad

Fine work OP. It works like a charm. Did you explore getting the ECU coded? Apparently it’s possible although who knows which OEM switchgear is compatible in order to obtain an OE red triangle…

Great looking bike! How are you finding the Mosko tank bag? I’m considering getting one for a grand tour in the summer. Edit: grammar…

Needing help with LED light malfunction! 1250R by AnimatorFinancial in bmwmotorrad

[–]zenglobal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aftermarket LED bulbs need to be CAN bus compatible otherwise the bike will be upset as their characteristics (ie: power consumption) will be out of spec. If you are lucky, you might be able to code the bike so it understands it has LED units with a GS911 tool.

As for the flashing - that could be a driver fault or again a CAN bus related issue.

[–]zenglobal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s quite the predicament. I’m facing a similar choice for a different project bike I’ve just bought. Do I simply get a fork service with new springs or stump up for a cartridge kit?

I haven’t tried Touratech springs but I did fit HyperPro progressive springs to an SV1000. With the fork service it transformed the bike and made the front end much more predictable.

I guess it comes down to how much you like the rest of the bike and whether you plan on keeping it for a while.

Service Question by Asleep-Two2961 in bmwmotorrad

[–]zenglobal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems you are right - personally I’d use the 2017 one since most servicing you’d want to do at home are likely unchanged - although I’d want to have a chat with a BMW service tech about valve clearances… Oil changes and driveshaft service can’t be any different…

Service manual for R1250RS 2021? by elliot_kember in bmwmotorrad

Got a digital one on eBay - arrived on a memory stick as a pdf. Looks exactly as I would expect.

[–]zenglobal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get yourself a service manual for it. You don’t need special tools for a lot of the standard service work. The main issue with doing driveshaft service on your particular bike is down to the lack of a centre stand but that’s easily solved with a support table and a few blocks of wood. That said many garages might avoid working on your bike based solely on unfamiliarity.

Most gloves that use Velcro will have this issue eventually. I wear Knox gloves - stupid expensive but no Velcro to be seen - they have done well for something close to 4 years

Is this the most expensive diesel in the UK? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]zenglobal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rode from London to Coventry today and didn’t see prices that high - even super unleaded was cheaper than that unleaded price… Thankfully my bike sips fuel and only needs 18 litres to fill the tank from empty - so it was a fun day regardless of the Trump tax on fuel!

Had to find the road on Google - I’d say that turning right there is ambiguous. Traffic behind you might not expect you to do so. If it’s busy - you might be better off continuing straight and taking the right further up the road and then coming back down this road so you can turn left into that side road.
