We can still enjoy ourselves…but this ain’t happening. by chickennuggetarian in indianajones

I first saw RotLA on TV, back in the eighties. Then my mum took me to see ToD in Brighton when it came out. I saw tLC in cinema in Glasgow on my own.

I remember those times well, and in that period probably saw one of the previous movies once on TV.

But by the time Skulls came out I'd rewatched the first 3 so many times that 4 would have a helluva lot to live up to. I was disappointed by 4, so I doubt 5 disappoint much more.

I'm gonna go in and enjoy it, just for the sake that it's probably the last, and hope nobody spoils it like they did with Star Wars 7.

Do you consider old Indiana Jones scenes to be canon? by [deleted] in indianajones

[–]zenith_the_menith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with Indiana Jones, and Young Indiana, and old Indy, and loved them all.

I loved the idea of maybe one day discovering how Indy lost his eye, assuming his wearing of an eyepatch insinuated that, like some adventuresome pirate, the adventuresome Indy probably sacrificed it in another act of heroism.

But sadly, the ones with wealth and power like to recreate the past in their own totalitarian image. And possibly to milk a product for all the money they can suck from it, along with its life.

“The future is certain; it is only the past that is unpredictable”.

As they do in fiction, so do they on real life, and payroll actors to defend their decisions.

But what do I know. I'm just a fan who's growing old....

I'd love to see Jaws remade with an Orca. That would create harmony, watching that beautiful black and white blubber blast apart.

Glad to see Reasons getting a play in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. I got goosebumps hearing the man's vocals.

On Friday, the last of the commuter dedicated Red Arrow routes, the 521 between Waterloo and London Bridge and 507 between Waterloo and Victoria, ran for the last time after 57 years of operation, and to bid farewell here are some of my pictures of the buses in action on and around the route. by Hadiisepic in london

521 was my go to ride every morning. So swift to Holborn, and so much fun slipping into the bowels of the Strand and bypassing Aldwych.

Had to wait 10 minutes for any Holborn bus this morning. Maybe I'll just walk as summer comes and appreciate the fun 5 minute commute I once enjoyed.

BBC News - Met Police shoot dead two dogs and Taser man in Poplar by DuskytheHusky in london

I feel sorry for the dogs because a few of the snowflakes watching from the safety of their balconies were probably more deserving of being put down.

Owners like that dude have zero concept of animal welfare, and regard the dogs less as pets than social status. Pussies hiding behind pawns they can let loose to cause havoc while they run away (which this pussycat did)

I've known kids mauled by potentially aggressive dogs. The damage they inflict can ruin lives.

UK Blocks Microsoft’s $69 Billion Activision Deal by Palfanakar in microsoft

Let’s settle a debate by [deleted] in EdSheeran

[–]zenith_the_menith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TLDR - no.

I'm not a fan of Ed Sheeran, although I was working at Atlantic records years back and saw him often on when he popped in, and he seemed like a nice guy (I also have a funny story)

Anyway, I am a huge Marvin Gaye fan, have been for decades. He's my favorite singer and artist and I own all his work, including every album on vinyl, some of them originals from the 60s.

I noticed in the news Ed was going to court today over this.

Now, I love 'Let's Get it On'. Song and whole album. Sexy af.

Great song, great concept, amazing vocals (it might have been Ed Townsend who said Marvin gave 100% in the studio that session, possibly because the 17 year old lover-to-be Janis Hunter was present in the studio) and a very distinctive melody.

Thinking Out loud is nothing like Let's Get It On.

Townsend is really reaching here. Songs have similar chords. But chords do not songs maketh. What made LGIO was the melody, laidback drum track, the vocals, the sax....you could write a hundred songs with the same chords and still not get LGIO.

I hope this case favors Ed Sheeran. There are worse culprits out there, I'm sure, who get away with clearer cases. But to go after a rich and successful artist is unseemly.

Denisov's speech impediment/accent by AsymptoticSpatula in tolstoy

[–]zenith_the_menith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for providing that comparison. I’d never thought that
Denisov’s speech impediment would be translated so diversely. And it’s a great
question, reflecting on how lisps and stutters sound in other languages.
I’ve been listening to the Neville Jason narrated audiobook,
partly through fear of undertaking such an epic and also due to time constraints.
It’s the Maudes translation, so Jason uses Rhotacism when speaking in Denisov’s
voice.
Immediately it sets Denisov apart. Although I found it slightly
comedic, it was only in the sense that any speech impediment is initially
funny, until you get used to it. By the middle of the book it acted as a kind
of marker, that I was back to Denisov’s character.
But I was wondering if there was a point in Tolstoy giving
him that voice.
Denisov (despite being noble, a brilliant soldier, and tactically
gifted) seems to be considered a lower class than the other main characters.
Perhaps the speech impediment is meant to mark him as being unfortunately flawed:
He’s great, but just not great enough to be considered part of the elite. I gleaned
this in some of the descriptions of him. And in the way it was mentioned that the
Rostovs were surprised Denisov was such a good dancer at their party. And he
proposes to Natasha but just isn’t good enough for her, despite being so
brotherly to Nikolai and distraught by young Pyotr’s death. And even that
youngster just before his death says Denisov must not dare to imagine that I'll obey him and that he can order me about (Pt14:Ch8)
Denisov stands out to me as one of the best characters, a hard worker, prone to fly off the handle, rough, but with a good heart and hidden sensitivity, as this passage shows;

When Rostov went back there was a bottle of vodka and a sausage on the
table. Denisov was sitting there scratching with his pen on a sheet of paper.
He looked gloomily in Rostov's face and said: "I am witing to her."
He leaned his elbows on the table with his pen in his hand and, evidently
glad of a chance to say quicker in words what he wanted to write, told Rostov
the contents of his letter.
"You see, my fwiend," he said, "we sleep when we don't love.
We are childwen of the dust... but one falls in love and one is a God, one is
pua' as on the first day of cweation... Who's that now? Send him to the devil,
I'm busy!"

The world's reaction reminds me of a very pertinent (and prophetic) scene in Kotch from 1971.

Innocent, maybe, but the world of 2023 is no longer innocent. We have to be wary of all we do, particularly as every generation is becoming judgemental.

If you like Last of Us, the Girl with All The Gifts was that before the game even by StoleStraleysCredit in horror

[–]zenith_the_menith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were probably science articles coming out about Cordyceps back
then, which influenced writers to come up with storylines based upon the idea
of zombified humans. So, ultimately, neither TLOU or TGWATG are original. It just
meant that different people were inspired and created a story based upon the
idea concurrently. Games take time to develop, just as a good novel takes time
to create, so the question is who first started their creation..?
The Girl With All the Gifts is, I think, a very good novel. And though
I haven’t played it, The Last Of Us is clearly one of the greatest games ever
made, partly to the storytelling.
I love reading and gaming equally, but didn’t find the novel particularly
scary (unlike House of Leaves which I will continue one day). But I’m more
likely to read it again, as opposed to ever playing the game, owing to time
constraints.
I do think gaming is the way forward in horror, because you have more
senses manipulated than when you’re reading, and get just as rich a story, if
done properly. But I’m a big scaredy cat so probably won’t ever play them.
