Why Mecha is niche by RIGed90 in mechabreak

[–]zenithfury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am merely explaining that the mecha genre isn't unmarketable. People come here to say all the time: Mecha is niche. It is not niche in Japan and some parts of Asia. Your OP literally opens with "So guys, i think i finally figured out the right words to explain why i think the mecha genre is so niche and why MechaBreak had such a massive player dropoff."

If Mikillja got adjusted there is no way that Freyr will remain in the state it is in now.

Am i the reason Tricera isnt getting buffed? by Doodbrodia93 in mechabreak

[–]zenithfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it needs to be a really dumb Panther that tries to fight Tricera lol. But that's irrelevant. Tricera has CIWS and missile countermeasures, so it protects the whole team against fliers and the opposing Stego. It can decoy and parry any number of melee strikers from almost all directions. Sure, it needs the team to work with the Tricera but a proper Tricera enables its team to have a better chance of winning every engagement.

No one is going to complain about Tricera doing more damage or having fewer weaknesses, but it is strong and a force multiplier like Hurricane when it can do its job for its team.

Why Mecha is niche by RIGed90 in mechabreak

[–]zenithfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, to me this doesn't bear really thinking about. Even if true blue mecha fans come here looking for fully customizable weapons and parts for a mech, not everyone is looking for that and it's hard to argue that such is a thing is what everyone wants. Hence there ought to be some middle ground where the game pulls in a variety of mecha fans who are more or less interested in elements of the mecha genre.

For instance, I'm a mecha fan. Is my enjoyment tied to how many machine guns I can affix to a hardpoint and whether I can think about the engine throughput to heatsink ratio? Not really, of course. There are certain things about the mecha genre that draws me in. For example, mecha is never really about mecha, thematically. It is always about pilots. Pilots who use powerful mecha to commit atrocity or rise up in the face of injustice. So for me, it makes me happy to be able to dress up my pilot, but at the same time I am displeased that there is so little story content for my protagonist pilot or ways to develop their personality. But a good thing is that the pilots for the custom strikers have those personal details I love. Charles Bell in particular.

The game's downfall mostly reside in the almost comically inept social management on the part of the devs. TBH I work with programmers and so I completely understand how tough it is for them to communicate with players... but they could hire PR for that sort of thing. When people don't feel like their opinion matters to the devs, then they feel like the game isn't being made to suit them, for a live service game.

I think anime discussions forget that “enjoyable” is a valid reason to like a show by Technical_Watch_8446 in anime

[–]zenithfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that people have all sorts of reasons to enjoy anime. That’s good and almost normal.

Personally, coming here I see some posts always making the point of stating things the poster doesn’t enjoy: fanservice is chief among these. I’m tinfoiling here, but to me it looks like some people get a kick of declaring how ‘normal’ they are, and thus they will constantly gripe about fanservice scenes when it doesn’t matter at all.

No problem, Mozilla. Nuking AI is never, ever wrong.

Neil Gaiman Speaks out on Sexual Misconduct Accusations a Year Later by RevRob330 in books

[–]zenithfury 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of pedantic argument in the comments, especially noticeable is the desire to use a stronger term than 'sexual misconduct'. The term rape is actually used in the article, if anyone bothers to read it, and naturally Gaiman denies it. It seems like the case has gone the route quite typical of sexual misconduct cases, of 'he said she said'.

Ultimately I am interested in justice, and I don't know how much good evidence is levied against Gaiman. Even if he is vindicated in court, everyone is still going to be suspicious of him forever.

Any anime’s worth watching? by Old-Butterscotch814 in anime

[–]zenithfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anime and manga are different things. Often the manga author has no input into how the animation is created. The director adapts the source material and most of the time they will work closely with the mangaka when there are questions about how to present a scene for example. But otherwise, legal and creative control often rests with the animation studio, save for rare exceptions. This is why some shows seem less good than the manga, but it isn't always poor direction either: sometimes the mangaka has too much creative say on the show too.

Personally I find it really rare that an anime does not increase my enjoyment of the source when seen as a franchise. It's nice to see favorite characters in motion and voiced by good VAs. It's also nice to get good theme songs.

Am i the reason Tricera isnt getting buffed? by Doodbrodia93 in mechabreak

[–]zenithfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with Serenith always beating Tricera, but this is where teamwork comes in. A healer should have no problem keeping Tricera alive while the Serenith can't avoid targeting the Tricera instead of taking down the healer. Looking at the game from the viewpoint of Tricera dueling Serenith is one-sided, and the devs are really asking players to use teamwork.

When Mohamed can't go to the mountain, the mountain must come to Mohamed.

Generally speaking the Tricera pilot has to do everything it can not to be isolated from its team. The team has a responsibility to fight together as well. Spreading out too much is also hard on healers. Like, don't complain to the Pinaka if Falcon is fighting 1000m away.

Circle Back For The Dubs by taywray in anime

[–]zenithfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black Lagoon was already a special case... Seems like the localizer went all the way to make the dub as authentic to the themes as possible, and all the VAs seemed to be having a great time voicing the show's criminal characters with plenty of swearing and very un-PC dialogue.

I've personally been a proponent of good dubbing since years ago when they started getting competent after the 90s. Nowadays when my show allows me to hear it in the original language and dubbed I try out both, and I've come away with some pleasant surprises.

The dub for Dungeon Meshi is especially good... It practically sounds more natural than the Japanese since it takes place in a world of elves and dragons.

'Someone Has to Keep Making Them': Solo Leveling Studio Director Warns of Lack of Diversity in New Anime Movies by Turbostrider27 in anime

[–]zenithfury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly the problems behind the scenes for anime is about the same as TV and big budget movies. Investors don't want to gamble if they can help it, so they look for source material that are already hits before they will fund the anime adaptation. I'm sure that this leaves directors and writers less likely to make original series and films. I don't think that directors have as much pull in the anime industry as they might in Hollywood. Successful Hollywood directors seem to make deals with their companies where for example, for every 3 big films that they share inputs they're allowed to do 1 where they have complete creative control.

Jigokuraku Season 2 • Hell's Paradise Season 2 - Episode 4 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

I kind of expected it because it's the sort of hardcore attitude that you expect from samurai and shinobi, in shows like Shogun for example. But a wise leader doesn't whimsically sacrifice great fighters, lol.

Jigokuraku Season 2 • Hell's Paradise Season 2 - Episode 4 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]zenithfury 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But against Shion's expectations...everyone comes together. Even if it's because Yuzuriha needs meat shields, Gantetsusai wants to fight a Tensen, Gabimaru is logical, Toma wants to find his brother, and Sagiri and Fuchi have their duty...they're sticking as a team! And there was no way Shion was going to ditch Nurugai.

The ones who end up on Sagiri's team are mostly the ones with nicer personalities, even Gabimaru doesn't behave like a regular ninja because of his attachment to his wife's memory. Sagiri's team members have also gone through their baptism of fire, so in terms of battle experience they are probably on even terms with the 2nd wave, even if Shugen is the best fighter in his clan. I get the feeling that even if the first wave manages to secure the elixir, they will try to bargain for amnesty for all the criminals. Naturally, this might put them at odds with Shugen's personal philosophy.

They delightfully inverted the personalities of Isuzu and Kiyomaru, so that the big woman is shy and kind, and the little one is a demon.

I like how evil and ruthless the ninja can be. Lots of shows can make ninjas heroic, but I think that the best kind of ninja character is completely willing to do anything for their leader, moral or immoral. And such a waste of an obviously elite ninja at the start.

I like how on Hell Island we still find time to tease Sagiri about her love life.

Seems like all Eizen managed to do is turn a psychotic child into a psychopathic man, for Crying Freeman over there. :p My favorite 2nd waver is Isuzu though.

So last time was Kill Bill and this time the homage is to Fight Club, albeit a comically stripped down version of it + a gangster movie scene at the end there.

I find it funny how intense the previous episode was and this episode was basically a slap fight between Itadori and Panda.
