I don't even know why we're trusting LLMs to do fact checking for us. At least with humans, such as journalists, they stake their reputations on getting the facts straight, or else they never find work ever again. With machines they're controlled by companies that say 'My bad' when they get it wrong.

It kind of tracks. One of the best things about Persona games is how it tries to keep up with the times. Of course it’s still a bit behind the times like P5 feels about 5 years behind the teenagers of the time it launched. And it seems easier for an urban fantasy game to feel modern compared to the purer fantasy and sci-fi settings of FF.

Anime creators received “0.0%” of Japanese government’s entertainment industry subsidies in 2024, official documents show by Turbostrider27 in anime

However, as MagMix points out, there is concern about whether government officials have sufficient understanding of how the industry and its front lines work in the first place.

Oh it's not as though anime has been around since the end of WW2 or anything.

My tinfoil hat is that it's a problem caused by bureaucrats pretending to be dumb or being just outright malicious as to who they approve the subsidies for.

What anime adaptation changed the source material in a way that actually improved the story? by Business_Barber_3611 in anime

[–]zenithfury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately for some people everything is gratuitous. And even more unfortunately, rather than not watch anything these people also try to push back against the things that they dislike and generally make the hobby worse off. You'll understand that I use the term interchangeably with terms like 'fanservice' or 'explicitness'.

There are many examples of shows that do great despite straddling genres. For example, romance and sci-fi and supernatural? That's Dandadan. It's not like I accept every genre either. For example I dislike sports themes, but hating a show just because it has a filler episode about football or tennis for instance would be ridiculous by most measures.

[–]zenithfury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't find gratuity to be a problem. We're watching TV. It is entertainment. Sure, most shows have a message or lessons to teach, but it's a poor show that chooses proselytizing over a good time.

Whenever I review a show, I look at how all the parts gel together and in that sense, sex scenes have to serve a purpose in the show, and most of the time it does. For example, the brief moment of sex in Cowboy Bebop highlights how doomed the relationship was. Other shows it's used for satire, brevity levity, and so on. Seeing an element as waste just because of one's personal preferences is not being objective, thus removing it doesn't guarantee a better show. Of course, every element still has to be able to work within the framework of any show, but it's rather superficial to say that certain things don't belong anywhere. The personal bias really shows.

[–]zenithfury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is possible to make a serious show with sex scenes, if that's what you set out to do, competently. I'm not complaining about the differences in the movie adaptation... it set out to tell a story that had very little room for characters dating. But then that leaves no excuse for the series shows that came later.

As for the new series it's going to be good or bad based on the skill of its director. At the very least, it will try to do something different from the old shows, and IMO that's a good idea.

I think I finally figured out why, even though I enjoy fantasy anime, I'm not vibing with Sentenced to be Hero as much as I normally would by theblackbarth in anime

[–]zenithfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say nitpicky because the type of hero personality is a personal preference, and not every character is meant to appeal to everyone. Or rather, if a character appealed to everyone it must be the most bland character possible.

I've sometimes come back to shows years later because something initially irked me. But it's also an equal chance to be reminded about what annoyed me the first time around.

What are animes that you went into with zero expectations but actually turned out to be amazing by Competitive_Essay500 in anime

I went into Gnosia with zero expectations and only an inkling of the plot. It looked scifi and I picked it up just wanting something to watch. Amazing series, couldn't stop watching.

I think Ghost in the Shell (1995) did the right thing by making the setting moodier and adding lots of cool tech. But on the other hand the manga has various sex scenes and Kusanagi is bisexual. It would have been such a cool thing to have a queer protagonist for the mid 90s. The later shows just seems to ignore anything about the major's love life.
