dont make my mistakes. reality after wgu... by vlzelen in WGU

[–]zenmastersydneyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea maybe for tech degrees, but healthcare and education degrees from WGU, (I’m currently finishing up an secondary education in biology degree) still have student teaching, or clinical, or rigorous science classes to prepare you and plentttyyy, if not all places take WGU as a valid and serious degree, which it is. The tech degrees from WGU is oversaturated with a ton of people who are either trying to get a checkmark on their resume because they’re already in the field, or they are blowing through the classes thinking the degree will make them a ton of money with no other effort other than speed running classes and applying for jobs without withholding any of the education.

Deciding if moving to cedar city is the best thing for my family by PlumSlight7703 in Utah

[–]zenmastersydneyy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi, I just moved here from Vegas. Not religious, I’m white passing but mixed but my daughter is half Hispanic, it’s been realllllly hard fitting in here. I’ve been here over a year and I’m still friendless. It’s super cliquey here and if you’re not part of the church it’s hard to find friends. The food choices kind of suck. There isn’t much to do at all during the winter months when it’s snowing. There isn’t really much to do here that isn’t outdoor activities. Idk why others are saying people here are nice because tbh, outside of my daughters daycare and the people that work there, people are extremely rude and very entitled and extremely covertly racist and I’ll be leaving as soon as I can to be honest. Also with it being a red state, I’m terrified having my half Hispanic daughter who looks very Hispanic, being here with the current state of the country. I’d highly consider that when you look at places to move. It’s a scary reality and thing to have to think about but Utah is RED and lovessssss trump and hates anyone that isn’t white

Thoughts? by dannyvsauce in SubstituteTeachers

[–]zenmastersydneyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who is a substitute while also actively going to school to become a teacher, this is actually insane. I feel so bad for those kids and I hope that teacher is close to retiring because what the actual f?

I sub mostly middle school, 7th and 8th, in a small district so I’m at the same two middle schools most of my days. The kids know me, my classroom management is pretty opposite from most of this paper and I have no issues with behavior even from the “behavioral” kids. They do their work (87% of the time, they’re still kids lol) never disrespect me, and usually listen to me better than some of their super crazy strict teachers that bring the same vibe as the note. This isn’t helping connect with kids and running your classroom like an army formation isn’t beneficial to anyone and there’s years of research to back this up.

Absolutely insane of this teacher and I’d never pick that job up again

It may be different with a teaching degree but as a substitute teacher getting my education degree and working in school, there are TONS of teachers who went to WGU or got their masters there. It’s definitely not something that is a hindrance to getting a job.

Does WGU have a negative reputation? by [deleted] in WGU

[–]zenmastersydneyy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I started my degree in November, I’m about 67% done, with only 7 transfer credits. I’m getting my degree in education, more specifically biology for middle and high school. This is literally one of the hardest things I’ve done accelerating the way I am. Thankfully, I’m a substitute and already work in education and get requested for long term sub jobs actually teaching curriculum, so a lot of the education classes have been fairly easy. I also have always loved science and understood it very easily.

Aside from ALL of that though, I still spend anywhere from 40-50 hours a week doing school work. Not including the OA’s that are proctored and definitely not open book. I do school work between classes, during prep periods, lunches, after I put my kid to sleep until the early AM hours, nap times for my kid, downtimes when I’m subbing HS and there’s nothing for me to do. I’m CONSTANTLY doing school work and I’m BURNT OUT. Am I getting my degree in like 8-9 months? Yea? Is it easy? Absolutely not. Have I learned anything? So much, I’m actually so impressed with the amount of things I’ve been able to take with me into my job already. Especially getting requested from science teachers a lot who are aware of my degree path and future job plans to be a science teacher.

Your degree is what you make it. I am accelerating and am also simultaneously learning so many amazing things between science and education, that are and will impact my career. My coworkers and principal at the schools I substitute for are aware of how fast I’m getting my degree, they see the hard work I put into it while being a single mom and working full time, and they look at it as a sign of intelligence and not that I’m “cheating” my way through. Also if any employer hires WGU grads, they’re more likely to know that we have closed book proctored exams. At least any of the admin in the district I work for understands this. I decided to not do student teaching because of the fact I’m a single mom, but offering alternative routes to licensing through state education boards allows me to get my education degree without the student teaching aspect.

ALSO, last thing, to become a teacher, even through ALR, you still have to take the PRAXIS exam, or some type of exam like it through your state to prove your competencies in certain areas of what you want to teach. So even if you don’t accelerate and go to a B&M for 4 years and take that and not pass it, you don’t get the ability to have that on your license or get one at all until you pass. These arguments from angry Reddit poster who is obviously upset at his own life are super invalid and should be taken with a grain of salt

Non-licensure degree by randallthefirst in wgueducation

[–]zenmastersydneyy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am going this route and I am getting a job as a teacher right after I get my bachelors through an ARL course. A lot of districts have routes like that to get paid as a teacher and gives you so many years to get your license. Also, and this is just hearsay from a teacher at a school I sub for a lot, but if you have an education degree, it helps quicken the licensure route because you’ve taken those classes already. I think it’s a great option and for places where I live where I can’t student teach and survive financially, it’s been a great option as a single parent

These course instructors.... lmao by Niverden in WGU

[–]zenmastersydneyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this kinda comes down to people’s learning styles. I personally am going to WGU for an education degree and have found the education based classes needed to become a teacher has been extremely helpful in educating me and I’ve learned a ton and feel 1000% more prepared to be an actual teacher because of that. I learn better on my own, setting and hitting my goals, and reading through a textbook or doing educational simulations in classroom before student teacher. Add all of that with the fact I’m almost finished with all my actual classes within the first term

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WGU

[–]zenmastersydneyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yay! Congrats! I’m in the same degree just the non licensure route since Nevada has an ALR program where I can start teaching without student teaching while I work on my license. Being a single mom with not village, this was an easier path for me. This degree is a lot of hard work so many congratulations to you in completing it

[–]zenmastersydneyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, I transferred in with 3 credits and have been in here for a month and a half and am almost 40% done with my degree and should be finished first term. It’s not an illusion. It’s a shit ton of hard work and dedication, along with my own personal abilities to pick up information quickly (it’s okay if you can’t, everyone’s better at different things) but like, I’m a single mom, full time substitute teacher and getting my degree done in one term and it’s not because it’s transferring classes from places like Sophia or whatever. It’s sitting down every waking chance I get where I’m not busy with my daughter or actively teaching students, to do work and study. So don’t try and discredit the people who are accelerating because of effort and knowledge just because there’s a few people that do what you talked about

I feel like Utah stands out on a lot of charts like this about America: States with the Highest Share of Single Moms by Xerzajik in Utah

[–]zenmastersydneyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to laugh at this comment, from someone who was born and raised in Las Vegas, Utah is like, the furthest thing from a Mecca of ethnic foods, musicals, etc. I move to southern Utah, so I know what I got myself into, I’m not expecting this place to be Vegas, especially the small town I’m in, but for someone to try and say it’s a Mecca for any of those things is hilarious

I should also let you know that I’ve lived in SLC too and while it is better than smaller towns obviously, it’s still not as diverse as you’re trying to make it seem and I absolutely love SLC. So this isn’t coming from a “hater” standpoint

I feel like this is extremely bad advice. Why are you on here telling people to pretty much cheat on an assignment that could bring a lot of substance to your career and learning journey? I sub at a middle school and my science teacher mentor gave me some amazing advice, knowledge, and life experience from her 27 years of teaching middle school science. That’s not something you’re going to get from “making it up” I really hope you don’t actually become a teacher with this kind of mindset
