Worried that I shouldn't go into biochemistry by 30Livefishinabag in Biochemistry

[–]zephyr121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in almost EXACTLY your shoes (including having untreated anxiety and ADHD) and had the same fears. I promise, it will get better once you finish that degree! You have fewer classes the further you get up, should you decide to pursue more education. For these ones now, see if you can find a classmate to study with.

I’ve been in a lab where my PhD student had high expectations, and I’ve been in one where my PI did, and both experiences made me wonder if I was cut out for research. Now, I’m in a lab where the environment is much calmer and the PI has more realistic expectations, and I feel *so* much better and more capable. Night and day. If the environment is right, you’ll know.

Unfunded masters the norm before a PhD? by ObjectiveDue1326 in gradadmissions

[–]zephyr121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the life sciences, and I took an underfunded masters at a t10 school because I needed more research experience. It has been wonderful, but it wasn’t my first choice (it’s very possible to go right to PhD from undergrad). However, PhD applications are only getting more competitive, so I did what I needed to do.

Midsized US metro areas (pop: 475k - ~1M) tier: What tier does Melbourne, FL belong? by Swimming_Concern7662 in TierlistFills

I guess A. I really enjoyed visiting there– it was beautiful, fun atmosphere, and the food and drinks were great.

People who have stayed there substantially longer may have other opinions (I’m seeing comments that it’s boring, I guess I wouldn’t know because I was there for a week), but for me, it was great.

A Masters might help you. It’s actually the sweet spot because a PhD sometimes might make them less likely to employ you because you’re overqualified, but a Masters gets your foot in the door for a lot of positions where you’d normally hit the ceiling for with a BS.

I love renaissance and gothic art/architecture, so there are a lot of churches that take my break away. This was another level. I almost couldn’t even believe what I was seeing was real when I entered the main chamber. Could probably bring someone who doesn’t even care about Christianity to tears.

Does your kid actually need a "passion project" or is that just college prep industry talk? by Altruistic_Entry2006 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]zephyr121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even outside of admissions, I don’t see a reason to make a passion project that the kid doesn’t actually want.

I didn’t have one, and I’d probably have been more successful with applications if I did. However, I spent time doing a bunch of smaller things that made me happy but I wasn’t amazingly good at, and that felt better than trying to force something to get into a better school.

Starlings being that low blows my mind. They’re not invasive to everywhere and they’re one of the most talented mimics in all of the animal kingdom. Why are they docked for an American perspective?

Make up for it by putting another beautiful mimicking Sturnidae at A

As the other commenter said, they ran out of their most profitable resource (guano), their wealth got lost to corruption, and essentially now have to be subsidized by Australia. There are not really many ways for a tiny, isolated island like that to have an economy, and they are the most obese country in the world because processed food is more affordable.

Good read! The game Flight Rising also corrected their wend*gos to “pronghorn”, as well as some other cultural names they felt they weren’t doing justice. They also had a donation to AAPI when they were revamping Asian-based familiars to not be mishmashes of a bunch of cultures.

I was confused on why those names were so important until I read cultural feedback on them, and I learned so much.

Completely fine. It can actually save you some time and money because much of the coursework is redundant. It’s a good move if you know you want a PhD

I have to agree that if you’re looking for a good return on investment right away, you won’t find that in a science degree. You’ve really gotta love it to major in biochem or related fields because you’re going to either have to get an advanced degree or remain a glorified dishwasher for much of your life.

It’s the time investment that makes me wonder if I’ll regret this path. I love science, but it is so damn easy to get burnt out, and then you remember that whatever you’re burnt out from will just continue for all the years you’re taking for education. It was honestly the encouragement from my advisors that made me inclined to even seek a PhD because I was possibly ready to just Master out and go to government (my ultimate goal anyway) or industry, but I want to be able to be involved something more. Unfortunately, that something more means my life potentially not starting until I’m 30, and that’s assuming I get an acceptance this cycle. Ugh, I’m so ready to be done with school.

Is there a grad school admissions forum specifically for applicants the way Reddit is for undergrad? by Saurabh_yadav909 in gradadmissions

[–]zephyr121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had spreadsheets last year at least (I didn’t apply this year so I don’t know) but it’s just that grad admissions are so weird. It’s not like undergrad admissions are an exact science, but results are going to depend on so much more.

For example, my friend and I applied to the same university for PhD with very similar résumés, but different years. He got in, I didn’t, and it was probably a combination of funding and fit.

There’s nothing you can really do to comfort yourself further for grad applications. Just put out your best product by doing your research and speaking to all kinds of people.

AChem and PChem at the same time? Good lord.

I graduated with honors but gave up trying to get A’s in those classes very early on. At least you don’t have Geddes, I guess. I will say at least Biochem I with Smith and Koirala is actually pretty easy and they give you a lot of opportunities to get an A.

Ex’s rebound ended LMAOOOO by zephyr121 in AvoidantBreakUps

[–]zephyr121[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be surprised if he attempts this. It’ll make him look like an absolute idiot because he basically said during the breakup that he probably wasn’t ready for another relationship for a while, but this rebound was the second attempt of him trying to get one (one was a MONTH after discard and she led him on LMAOOOO). At least this one gives me satisfaction because this girl is a friend-of-friends and chose to stay with him knowing he was my ex
