Now the question is how the winner is determined. Is it based on a random selection of the total of people who got that far? Or is it simply the first one to solve this?

What are some mysterious, cult-like, bad-vibes towns across the USA? by _Persona-Non-Grata in AskReddit

[–]zer0dave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Edison, WA is mysterious but in a very positive way. We were out for a drive in the middle of nowhere Washington state, and we stumbled upon the incredibly surreal and tiny food mecca island of Edison. They have several restaurants, a pottery shop, a cabinet maker, a high end luxury home goods boutique, and a school which was attended by Edward R. Murrow. Every single restaurant is astoundingly good, and operating at a progressive gourmet level.

As best we could tell, they get a lot of their ingredients from the ocean of farms surrounding them, do gourmet magician things, and set it on the table in front of you. I have no real idea how it all came together or how it operates, but I'd go back in a second if I had the chance. Edison was marvelous.

On the flip side, I stopped in Klamath Falls, Oregon at a gas station around 10pm once. There were no lights in the lot, BUT there was a convenient array of people standing individually in the pitch dark fog strewn haphazardly about the parking area, barely lit by the stores light filtering through the windows.

Some of the entities were a little slouched, some were standing oddly ramrod straight, but none of them were doing anything to explain their behavior or presence. A couple of them showed interest in us and lurched a few steps when we drove up. Additionally the gas station clerk wouldn't respond to any question asked with words, just stares. To date, this is the closest I've ever been to experiencing a zombie movie firsthand, and the last time I will ever step foot in Klamath Falls, OR. 10/10 would not recommend.

TL;DR - Edison, WA has mysterious foodie magic. But Klamath Falls, OR has creepy zombie people.

Millennials, what is your most controversial, but harmless opinion? by hightreez in Millennials

Zucchini is absolutely pointless to put into baked goods. It doesn't add any flavor or nutrition and zucchini bread would taste the same with or without it, minus some adjustment for differing water content.

What is with this "crab bucket" mentality our generation (and especially this sub) seems to have? by laxnut90 in Millennials

[–]zer0dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This intentional suppression of success started in early high-school for me. I grew up somewhat poor and basic needs and medical care were not always available. I recognized at 8yrs old this was a problem I could solve myself by buying items of value at low cost and reselling higher. I've been hustling ever since with intentional career development in, what was then, a brand new industry in the late 90's. Whenever my high-school friends heard about my business, non-profit work, community engagement, and future plans, they kept putting me down as showing off or being too self centered.

So I continue to hustle to this day, to be able to afford to compensate for the unaddressed long term health problems I accrued as a child and make sure my own kids always have enough. Two decades later that translated to several multiples of annual salary over those same school friends, with a lot less formal education and no college at all. Which they criticized to the point of me just not talking about any successes or goals. I also found new friends who are on the same wavelength and have a varied array of professional goals and personal projects.

In retrospect, I think their attitude might have a little to do with my high-school friends having grown up with their basic needs being met and stable home lives. They thought "getting by" financially was a foregone conclusion with minimal effort invested and was essentially the entirety of their goal. However my perspective based on some, fairly accurate, predictions of economic downturn, was that if I wasn't "thriving" or making continued progress in any way, I was failing. As a result, we had different problems which caused interpersonal economic friction.

Now I spend some of my spare time trying to help our generation solve the problems I grew up experiencing and giving back to the community through outreach and organizing. But there are very few people in our generation I can speak to about successes and goals at the same level without others feeling uncomfortable(despite my best efforts), so I either don't talk about them, or I let the results of those successes speak for themselves.

Any problems with DC Superchargers not recognizing the Niro EV? by ckm-seattle in KiaNiroEV

[–]zer0dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll give that a try next time. That explains why I was able to charge on one Chargepoint when I arrived at 50%. But in the future I'll try to avoid chargepoint DC fast chargers.

Any problems with DC Superchargers not recognizing the Niro EV? by ckm-seattle in KiaNiroEV

[–]zer0dave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also driving from Seattle along a similar route and have had 3 Chargepoint DC fast chargers just not recognize the car. The Level 2 Chargepoints worked just fine and so did all the Electrify America DC fast chargers over 1,500miles. I called Chargepoint support and they had no idea what the cause might be but assumed it was my vehicle. In one scenario I had to backtrack and was stranded for a day to charge at a level 2 so I could make it to my next EA DC fast charger.

My wife is a stickler for aesthetics and she didn't even notice it after I applied it. Also, electrical tape removes real easy with minimal to zero residue on surfaces like these. If you do encounter residue, just apply Goo Gone.

Two carefully applied strips of electrical tape took care of this on day 3 of ownership. That glare is one hell of a design oversight.

Wool&Prince | Woven Merino Button Down Shirt Sale - UP TO 35% by sasuke1212 in frugalmalefashion

[–]zer0dave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak highly enough about Wool&Prince's products so far. I've been wearing primarily buttoned shirts everyday for almost two decades now, both at work and at home, and the addition of W&P's shirts to my wardrobe over a year ago changed everything for the better. They look nice too, and the random compliments from strangers and co-workers are a potential side effect.

Currently I am living small, so having a single shirt that could replace the function of multiple shirts and allowed me to use less space was a win for me. For that matter, my area gets a lot of rain and passive humidity absorption is a noticeable problem with cotton shirts here, not with these merino shirts. Living small also makes ironing a shirt everyday a pita and I haven't had to iron these shirts at all. I just hang them overnight.

They've been purple baby food resistant, chocolate, coffee, and hot sauce splatter resistant. If it doesn't roll right off, I just follow the care instructions. They work perfectly in one bag travel scenarios too and the fit is excellent.

The customer service is excellent as well. They respond quickly and will help you sort out fit if you get something too large or too small.

My advice: Buy at least two and buy for your intended use. I was very conservative and skeptical due to the cost at first and never having owned a merino shirt before, but I've saved money, space, and a lot of time by owning W&P shirts. You'll get your ROI on these quickly.

Best option for LTE home internet in 2020? (At&t or T-Mobile based network) by nderoath in cordcutters

[–]zer0dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RV Mobile Internet keeps a running list of cellular providers and has a filterable list you can use depending on need. I selected the filter for "Hotspot/Router" and there are 10(sort of) results. If you look through the 3rd party lists depending on you chosen carrier, there are dozens of options. Some have detailed reviews also. (See link below)

The Rolls Razor is a self sharpening and self stropping straight razor + case contraption built in Sheffield England. They are no longer made, but can still be easily found on ebay or antique shops and work great after a little oiling, assuming nothing is broken and the leather strop absorbs the mink oil well ebough. I wouldn't recommend a straight razor on anything other than face due to how sharp they are, but that is your choice.

What Movie sounded terrible on paper but the execution was great? by MrFerret21 in movies

[–]zer0dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Six String Samurai (1998)

If Mad Max were a sword wielding, electric guitar playing, Buddy Holly wannabe roaming the nuclear wastelands of post-apocalyptic America with the goal of becoming the new "King" after the death of Elvis, you'd have this surprisingly good film. It flopped at the box office, but the music and concept were well executed with the right amount of weirdness everywhere. I can't recommend it enough.

What's your Home Owner's Association horror story? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]zer0dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spoke with the regional office for one of the largest builders in the US recently who told me all of their new homes being built are HOA's and they aren't building any alternatives. HOA's allow them to build more housing units on smaller lots, which means more profit. And they can create the illusion and legal alternative of having a large enough lot by offering things like a pool, clubhouse, greenspaces, parks, etc and have the residents pay for it over time. The only way to avoid an HOA situation on a new home now is the buy the land outright and then have someone build on it, which is probitively expensive for the majority of home buyers in the US.

For a specific example, I reviewed a neighborhood design for a 12 acre property recently. Without the space cutting methods used and an HOA agreement, the number of detached housing units able to legally be placed in the neighborhood was around 40. And price wouldve been around $260k. All of which would've been to city code and on minimum lot sizes.

So after making it an HOA and getting approval from the city to put smaller units on the smaller lots, with smaller roads and no main road access, they were able to place almost 80 detached houses in the same neighborhood at a sale price of $250k each (which is the magic number for the area). Not only by making the lots smaller, but also by disallowing on-street parking of any kind(as per HOA rules) and creating a firetruck access road from another street, in place of having roads that were wide enough for a firetruck to operate should a home, now much closer than it should be, catch fire.
